I watched most of the performances of Chaconne that Farrell and Martins (both at the peak of their careers) gave during the post Nutcracker Winter 1976 and Spring 1976 seasons, and Balanchine changed the opening choreography for this pas de deux (which is actually the second pas de deux in Chaconne for the lead couple). During the premiere season, he had Farrell bouree from front stage left directly to the front center of the stage, as Martins walked on her right side, with both facing towards their destination as they travelled. I still feel that this was the best version, with Farrell's bouree perfectly matching the subtle trilling of the flutes. By the spring, he had Farrell circling her partner as she boureed towards front center, which I felt broke the flow of her movement and the accompanying music. This couple, although excellent and very musical (too many non NYCB dancers performing Balanchine are not) omit the original and secondary opening choreography. Plus I miss Farrell's remarkable extension. Some terrible camerawork/editing here; the camera does not move to Ananiashvili (a Georgian name?) from her partner as she performs a series of grandes battements. Did she match Farrell's sky high kicks?
A lucky find. Never had heard of this ballet. By Balanchine. Love Balanchine. Love the music. For me the music is half of the enjoyment. Saw this last week for first time. Have watched it many times since. A favorite. I did watch the Farrell/Martins version. The staging is awful. Horrific. Cannot watch it again.
Nina and her partner danced beautifully together. Thank you,C ❤❤
Nino is magnificent as always, love her very much ❤️❤️❤️
Gorgeous! Refined choreography and dancing. They are well matched and danced beautifully together

Beautiful!!! Who were the coreographer?
noemi sztulman George Balanchine
I agree ,this Duet is beautiful !!! But.... who's a choreographer?!
Zina M George Balanchine.
It takes a lot of guts to try to follow in Suzanne Farrel's footsteps.
Nina was Prima Ballerina Assoluta and of course she did it perfect!
Is it Vasil Akhmeteli?
It could be. Thank you!
Yes, I believe you're right! Thanks again :)
