I do not understand why the regulator is not informed about ways to warn. For example, there are buoys on a chain that you can span across the river.

Exactly. Where i live, dangerous parts of the river are roped off and have buoys

It also helps if more of them are marked. Just saying.

These dams are so creepy. I lost a classmate because of one. 15 foot deep water filled with tree stumps getting taken down and held for 30 seconds.

Why aren't all of them marked. Good grief!

Indiana needs to order every city with one of these lowhead dams in it to redirect funds for one of the budgets to pay for removal of a dam each time the budget is made. Usually these are about $2 million - $3 million to remove, depending on the size. That's a pretty small dam, so it might be between $1 million and $1.5 million if you find the right company. They'll just come in with pneumatic chisels and chip it away, then use other heavy equipment to grab the big pieces.

the gid thing about them is there's quite a few used to backup flow to irrigation of crops across America. so you have to run evaluations on that too before going gung ho on removing them. another solution is dont be a dumbass and go near one in the first place. thats step one step two is evaluate the need or not for i if its not needed get rid of it i agree im saying do it smart though

Ron at Rusted Moon, featured here in a little clip, may have said a lot about the danger of moving water and the importance of knowing features on a waterway before paddling there. The clip may have been edited to death, but it's unfortunate his quote about paddling on moving water and driving on a highway was included. As seen, it can instill or maintain a sense of ignorance regarding the hazards associated with paddling when one doesn't know what they don't know. And what they don't know can easily kill them.

The technology already exists to fix these dams! A 1 to 10 sloped concrete encased boulder spillway would work where these dams are still needed. Also the ones that aren't needed for irrigation that were used for factories and mills should be removed!

A smart bit of advise Ralph Frese (the great canoe maker and conservationist) he shared with me and my father "Don't be damm fool to run over the dam. "

I'm from Williams Indiana and this is false ... Use good judgement and proceed...we went up a damn twice the size (aka crane damn) with my grandfather on a Jon boat and guess what we were just fine.. yes it is dangerous but use common sense..

it depends on the tail-water depth, mostly. Some have the right depth for the backwash system MOST of the time, for other dams the condition comes and goes as it passes through certain levels in flood stages. The danger is in the hydraulic backflow that pulls you back into the waterfall and traps you in that nasty re circulation cycle. Personally I wont go over these things, but you actually CAN tell by sight if the dam is just a waterfall rapids or a re-circulation deathtrap. They can be either one. Look for the boil and back-flow.

You are obviously not knowledgable about moving water. Regarding your advice, others will be best advised to ignore it.
