      Can we just get an official statement from you regarding Red Velvet's "Psycho"? This song is not on your schedule for the next 6 months, and it is also not on your "Will Not React To" list. I've scanned your twitter to see if you've touched on this matter at all, but all I can find is you discussing chord progression of Psycho with some person. Just help your subscribers/viewers keep their expectations in check, we don't want you to do anything you don't want to do. All we want is a "Yes" or "No", because we are all getting tired of wondering.

    7:44 As a musician who has also studied jazz in university, I respectfully disagree. This song does have Latin and maybe even hints of Brazilian influences that to me are far from offensive. In fact I get excited when I hear genres like these and jazz in a more mainstream context because it shows some depth to these artists we like AND it exposes people who don’t normally listen to other types of music to other musical worlds.
    That being said I’ve always loved the reactions this channel brings, and it’s great to hear other musicians notice the things I hear! :)

    7:44 I see what you’re saying but different aspects of music don’t just belong to one certain culture! Music is the universal language, it connects people. Getting inspiration from other cultures with their unique musical histories is not at all disrespectful. If that was the case then almost every single song in existence today would be disrespectful

    • @kdb5312
      @kdb5312 4 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      this is totally true but i'm itching to say something because you used a word that is usually improperly used, inspiration, which i can understand the misuse of because in the past i did it too.
      i studied fashion design and in history class all the designing we did was taking inspiration in traditional clothing, accessories or architecture from x culture to apply the different methods we learned so that we didn't make a copy of it, because if it's a copy it's not longer inspired in, is just that, a copy; and that's when one as a creator needs to be cautious and know what they're working with to avoid disrespecting the meaning behind traditional things. for instance, this song has a latin rhythm, not inspired in a latin rhythm, those are two different things.
      that being said talking about the song and as a latina myself, i loved it! is such a fun sounding song without going over the top to the point of getting way too energetic, i love the music and i love how his voice sounds with it

      As a Brazilian, I can say there was nothing disrespectful about 'Any Song' regarding it's influence to some of our genre. It's quite tasteful, actually. I wish people didn't go around presuming this kind of thing, no matter how well studied they are.

    • @bobansak2583
      @bobansak2583 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      @@kdb5312 I understand your "inspiration/copy argument" but as someone who played trumpet and percussion in "real Latin" bands and in bands that played Afro-Latin-Carib music, I would consider that piano hook as an inspiration mode of the song. For me if it were a copy it would need the rhythm to be founded in a percussion section. I'd have to listen to the song more, but I assume In typical K-pop "fashion", there is little to nothing else in the song that is a latin rhythm. Btw I like it and one of my strong attractions to K-pop is the "borrowing" of so many types of music.

  • @humphreychannel582

    Man, it's always the americans (specially white americans) making things controversial when they aren't. I didn't see ONE single latin american person complaining about the use of latin rhythms in any song (or any songS in general for that matter), historically we've always been robbed and the ones who historically robbed US are the ones complaining, lmao.
    Besides is funny they complain about this and try to be politically correct when, whenever they do "tango dancing" on tv/movies they always with no exception mix flamenco (which isn't even latino) and salsa elements to it like everything is the same. If you're gonna be politically correct then don't be selective. But also don't come fight fights that aren't yours to fight, I'm done.

    I am Latina (born and raised in Guatemala, lived here all my life), and I can say that I don't know a single person who would be offended by this. It might be different for people of latin descent who grew up surrounded by a different culture, but most Latinos are flattered and excited when others appreciate and expose the rest of the world to aspects of our culture. Personally, I was so into this song from first listen because it felt familiar and seemed like the kind of song I could play at a party with my family and they would bop to it and not complain because it is in a language they don't recognize. Actually showed it to my mom and she really liked it, because the Latin influence made a kpop song into something she can relate to and have an instant connection to, when she wouldn't usually give a song in Korean a chance at all.
    So yeah, I am all for tasteful cultural appreciation and exchange, it broadens our horizons and makes our perspective more diverse.

    I really don't mean to sound rude or ignorant, but I just don't get the talk about cultural appropriation?? I was kinda shocked to hear that people think of it as cultural appropriation if you use certain elements in your music, tbh.. That's like saying nobody except black people is allowed to use blues, hip hop, or rap elements or nobody except people that live near the alps is allowed to jodel or only austrians are allowed to compose a waltz? For me the most beautiful thing about music is, that it isn't limited to ethnicity, culture or race, it's an universal language and you can understand so much without understanding the language that is used in a song.. I think that using any element, that is commonly used in other regions, in a song, because you like the sound of it, is not cultural appropriation but musical appreciation.
    I hope I didn't offend anyone. I honestly love and enjoy various types and styles of music from all around the world, so it never even crossed my mind that anyone could see using different elements of music as cultural appropriation..

  • @Ja92fy
    @Ja92fy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +183

    On that bit about music culture appropriation. Bruh, he’s rapping. There’s trap influence. The whole song has a distinct western flavor to it compared to where he’s from. I don’t get it when people who dont belong to a specific culture create a fuss about someone disrespecting that culture when barely anything is heard from the people who are actually of that cultural background.
    Im not saying this about that guy in particular but talking generally about all the fuss that’s created. If you create an art piece after being inspired by someone or something then that’s more than welcome as long as you are educating yourself about that culture and being respectful.

    7:38 bruh. Music is music. Everything has been inspired by something else. Using different culture's music to create something new is something to be happy about. How do people expect to progress when they get butthurt over things like this? There's a difference between culture appreciation and cultural appropriation. If I use a piano in a song does that mean I'm taking away from Italian culture? (piano originated in Italy) Incorporating African inspired beats into a song doesnt mean I'm taking away their culture. It means I respect it and enjoy it. Using musical styles from other countries is a good thing. It's only bad if it's used for the wrong reasons (Ex. Using Chinese inspired music to make fun of Asians)

    I always find it interesting when socio-cultural discussion is happening, especially as a sociologist. It really brings out the perspective certain communities have on the exact same thing. One side sees it as disrespectful and perceive that others think the same, while those who may have been "affected" by the apparent "appropriation" see it not so much as "appropriation" but as proof that their culture is impacting another's.

    Im happy to listen to a song where latin sounds and latin inspiration is not only acustic guitar, which is always more like spanish guitar. Latin music has a lot of different sounds and here we appreciate a few of those sounds. Kpop is well known for borrowing sounds and this is a nice example on how you can do it without disrespecting a culture. A lot of kpop songs with latin pop vibes were released before, but the mostly used similar spanish guitar sounds so it became overused and sometimes boring. Also those same songs had music videos that portrayed Latin culture as those hot, deserted places in the middle of nowhere. So that does seems a lot more on the stereotypical side.

    U should definitely react to his older songs, there's this one song of him that I like a lot and I can't seem to find other kpop songs with that R&B e Jazzy sound, the song is I Am You You Are Me

    • @dvmeca2062
      @dvmeca2062 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the lack of similar sounding songs to "I Am You You Are Me" is mostly because it's a really unique, complex song. It's one of my favorite K-Pop songs & there really aren't many musical reference points for it that I'm aware of. In Kpop, the closest parallel might be IU's "Modern Times" album (best Kpop album ever imo) and some of her later jazzy tracks (like my favorite song by her, "Palette" and her recent title track, "Lilac"), which have a slightly different vibe than this, but are still jazzy & exceptionally well done. Zico's duet with IU, "Soulmate" is related to "I Am You You Are Me," in the sense that it's essentially a second song covering the same general theme of seemingly fated or predestined relationship types and has a somewhat similar vibe, but I'm guessing you're familiar with "Soulmate" already.
      If the comparisons aren't limited to K-Pop, the closest songs I've heard to "I Am You You Are Me's" vibe might be some of Prince's jazzier songs (not his hits, but album tracks like "When the Lights Go Down" or "Strollin" or his live shows at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which are TH-cam). Steely Dan also has some really intricate, jazzy songs that are sort of second cousins to this (Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Haitian Divorce, Glamour Profession...), but with some production elements that are clearly from a different era... maybe Sade ("Smooth Operator"), as well.
      But you really don't hear the "I Am You You Are Me" sort of vibe nearly as often as I'd like either. I think the biggest part of that is really just that it's seriously hard to do well & it's probably not a coincidence that Prince (who was basically in his own league as far as overall musical talent) and Steely Dan (famous for hiring some of the best jazz musicians to do session work on their records) have made some of the most similar music to it. IU is also just super- talented in the technical sense necessary to pull off this sort of music... she wrote (i.e. music & lyrics, no co-writer) "Friday," the acoustic swing-pop big hit from "Modern Times" at age 19 or 20, and I feel like IU and Zico (and maybe Sunmi) are basically on their own tier in K-Pop (which has been MUCH better than Western pop for at least a decade now imo).

      I for one enjoy latin (or just world music in general) influences in pop, but it's good to also keep in mind that world music often has a very specific history behind it that isn't to be taken for granted.
