Can remember 40 years ago in my engineering apprenticeship we were in the welding shop. Our oxy-acetylene welding torch had a flashback. Yes we were using a very large welding nozzle but the flashback honestly seemed like not much happened. It tripped a flashback arrestor and we were about to re-start the welding when the lecturer stopped us. That lecturer was a wise old man - an ex-blacksmith and he he suspected a problem. He reached his hand to the acetylene tank and felt it - it was warm. All hell broke loose. One of us had to run to an office and ask for the fire brigade. The others turned the gear off and quickly ran from the workshop. A large evacuation of nearby buildings ensued. I'm not too sure exactly what happened but we all had to stay away for the rest of the day. No explosion but the fire brigade remained on site for that whole day. Using oxy-acetylene was never the same again!
There is an auto reset/resettable flashback arrestor that automatic resetting after flash occur and you can use it over and over again wothout Replacing it.

Check valve stops the flow of gas not the ignition of it.
The check valves are open when flow is correct and flame burns right through it.

Flashback arrestors are only guaranteed to work once. Don't test them. This is just a demonstration.
