A lot of people are asking how the flyby camera was done at the end of the video. I needed a cinematic mod for TLD so I could have good aerial footage when relevant to the contex. The backstory here is that this character, having been driven mad by earlier experiences on GB Island, now believes anything from the island is cursed, and only things washed up from the sea are pure of spirit.
Beachcombing is a mechanic I love in TLD. It ties up some loose ends in the game, like the finite nature of cloth, metal, saplings and matches. It is also an element of the game world reacting to changes from the weather. It would be lovely to see other things changing, like paths altering from blizzards, frozen areas only being accessible on warmer days and what have you. I was contemplating doing a run of this, but glad to see you took to it.
The longest I lasted on a beachcombing only run was 26 days. I found a flare on day 2 and then matches not long after. The key is to wait to the last minute to make your fire until you've combed as much fuel as you can. Also you have to remember to make your birch teas and use them for sleeping on lean nights. I probably could have lived longer but I fell through the ice and got hypothermia and died before I got back to where I was storing my fuel.
Beachcombing is a fun mechanic, that also indicates things have really went to hell in the greater world. There is a LOT of cargo washing up now....... Side note, I think it'd be cool if we could find/fix a canoe that would allow us to travel the coastlines quickly(maybe tied to a weather mechanic so you have to be choosy about when to use it). I think that's what they showed with Astrid anyway lol.
@@rustyshackleford3316I have lived in the coast for generations, and let me tell you, nobody can't even phantom what will show up on shore, those tools did really get a transatlantic tour tho 😅.
I don't think it needs to be nerfed. The return based on time spent is pretty low. It's suboptimal at everything from collecting food to fuel, however it is a renewable source for some finite items which is the true value of beachcombing. Respawning coal or the new recipes are way more OP.
what a wonderful idea. i love how this community still finds new ways to play this game and think of new challenges. i recently was trying out Deadman challenge and it was almost the most fun i had with the game. i think i should try out this beach combing method as well today
Crumbling Highway is now known as Winding River. Zak has spoken! Seriously though, I know what it is like to have a young child. Sleep deprivation is no bueno.
Whaaaat?!! I can't believe you actually tried this :) I briefly tried this myself but I found it too boring to bother with, glad I can just watch you suffer instead! :P
I'm probably going to have some thoughts to share throughout this video so I'll just tack them on here :) There seems to be something weird going on with your logic for which items/activities are "allowed." For example, you can't pick cattails but you seem to imply that you would be allowed to collect burdock if you got a tool from beachcombing. In this sense, it seems that you are not allowed "free" items, only items with a cost/unlock, and only when that cost/unlock can only be traced back to beachcombing. So, here are a few things to consider. What about the pre-existing frozen deer carcasses? The only way to harvest these is with fire or a tool, both of which can only be obtained via beachcombing. Shouldn't those be allowed then? What about in the lategame when you reach carcass harvesting 5 and can harvest frozen? Does that disable them because now it's "free?" Another example: At first glance acorns are off-limits because they are free to collect by hand. But you can't use them without leaching the tannins, which requires water, which requires a fire which can only be obtained from beachcombing. So by the established "logic" acorns should be permitted. Anyway, just some thoughts on the matter. Please nobody take this comment too seriously :D
Ok, finished the video. I think matches may be a red herring, because fire frequency doesn't really matter in the long run(getting that first firestart or two is key though.) I would guess survival is going to come down to how well you can convert your *extremely* limited fuel income into water. Getting a second can is massive, nearly doubling production. Cooking outdoors when it's cold will be very important too, for the burn bonus. The front of the cave in Crumbling Highway, and a few ultra-windproof outdoor spots will be very helpful here. The firemaster feat will be critical, giving you a 10% bonus to start and putting you 50 firestarts away from level 4 for the 25% bonus. I would guess it's worth it to delay usage of the first flare/match as long as possible and then immediately try to push for level 4. Oh, and cooking level will make the water boil faster, increasing production. Even if water production isn't the bottleneck later on, optimizing it in the early game would allow you to survive longer while waiting to find the second flare or a box of matches.
What an inspirational video!! Ever since I’ve watched 2 weeks ago I’ve been beach combing non stop! I started at pilgrim to see what was possible initially but now moved up to Voyager and after a blizzard on day 2 on CH I came to find a full mini Reiken come ashore! I couldn’t believe it!!! I was able to climb on board to search all lockers and even open the main cabin to search more lockers inside! I had to take a few photos as it must be so rare!
One tweak - for any items that you can't use *now*, simply moving them inland a bit instead of carrying them would probably be fine, plus it would act as markers - you could use extra items to create a line to show the edge of the weak ice. Like, you're not going to need scrap metal for a long time. Just rightclick and move it a bit so it counts as a manually placed item and clears the spawn point, like you would do with coal.
Kudos for overcoming the technical difficulties. Always happy to see a new upload. My husband is also a content creator and I definitely understand the strain of squeezing in recording/editing with a newborn in the mix!
I love how you allways start out on the hardest possible rule-sets! If you want to figure out if you could surive i feel a change of rulesets would be fair. 1. You can loot - restoring recources (sticks, logs, coal & stones) 2. The run starts after you aquire a forging hammer, mag-lense as well as XX feathers and XX arrowhead, since most likely you will have some leftover. 3. You can hunt animals 4. You can upgrade some clothes that you would have kept alive in a normal interlopar run This ruleset kinda simulates the "endless interlopar scenario)
55:14 They should add an option to slowly melt water indoors without the ability to boil it obviously. Getting fire on this challenge is quite a long shot, and with the small amount of wood you get from beach combing, you can't sustain a fire forever. I don't think you can make clothes or a bow in this challenge, because you would need a knife, which you can only get with a hammer and I don't think you can get them with beachcombing.
Maybe you allow youself to ONLY loot a maglinse. That way you can only start fire outside and have to carry it inside - what requires enough wood. That way it still is incredibly difficult... But I l-o-v-e-d your challenge! Great work!!!

Gracias Zak.Admiro mucho tu trabajo y siempre aprendo y descubro nuevas cosas sobre el juego. Enhorabuena por tu paternidad. Te deseo lo mejor para ti y los tuyos.
Sticking with your vibe I think a Coastal Forager challenge would work. It'd be mostly beachcombing but the bonus is the ability to loot things on the shoreline of the ice too. So stone and stick spawns on the edge of the islands in CH are in play plus the occasional other loot on the edge of landforms touching the ice. Maybe anything in a fishing hut too.
@Zaknafein There's also some standard spawns like bodies, loot in boats that are right on the shore that I'd say are fair game. The old loot tables had a flare on the island near the bear cave in CH, so stuff like that *could* be considered fair game perhaps.
My first ever playthrough of Wintermute, and I couldn't figure out how to use the rope after deployment, so I ended up goating down next to it, fell and took some damage, bruising, torn clothes etc.. but I guess the rope had been placed so I didn't die.
If you can afford the time, you could make the improvised crampons fairly quickly to help with the ice within the first few days assuming you get your essentials
Could it be... You meant as 4th region not shown on the map is crumbling highway... Not winding river 🤔😬 And we should admire another of Zak's finest quotes: "it's in the middle of the night but at least it's a clear day" 37:08 😸😅
Really inspiring Zak, thanks for a great vid! I get your purist beach combing mechanic angle. I think Im gonna try a similar run including all items on ice + boats + fishing huts. It wont be too easy thats for sure 🙂
Great video Zak, will probably try this challenge out as my loot-goblin brain REALLY likes beachcombing. Thanks for the long video, it's understandable they will get more rare but the wait is always worth it. Best of luck with parenthood, both to you and your partner!
Please do make more of a guide/test type video with knowledge of the loot tables. This was very chill, with some intense moments in there on occasion. We just don't have enough people making guides anymore, most guide videos are like 8 years old. 😅 Can't ofc speak for everyone, but I personally love watching game theory and testing of mechanics. Wish there was more of it tbh.
I think thats fine. Both sticks could break if you fail. But you have a 5 % Chance of succees for example. And it takes you double amount of time. And double tinder... so really just the last way out. I like this idea. :)
Excellent video! If nothing else it did a good job showcasing what the more common Beachcombing items can be. I was surprised how many Fishing books and Wool Toques were available. At least if you did find matches, the books would be great for fire starting with greater success, meaning a lower chance of a wasted match. However, I think looting matches in general would be too strong to go along with this challenge, but if you could survive long enough to find a Mag Lens then that would be a fair compromise. It would also give a good balance between what to do in bad vs. good weather, it would limit your options while still actually giving you some.
An idea for your main run if you run out of things to do: map the edges of thin ice to have an optical warning in the world Other than that, keep up the good work and thank you for another relaxing longplay
@@arrbos Depends. If you follow the rule that you are allowed to use items allowed by the rules to get other items, then if stones on the sea ice were allowed, hunting with them (off the sea ice) could be allowed, too.
Let me tell you: everytime I go to sleep (in real life, I mean outside of the game) I say "ok, I'm gonna sleep ten hoursss" just like you, haha... Of course I can't sleep for so long because life and work and such, but the ten hoursss thing became something very funny for my girlfriend... anyway, thanks for teaching me how to play this hard but beatiful game, I hope to have some money soon so I can send you back at least something from all the content you do every week. Regards!
I'd love to see another attempt at the challenge with the other options you mentioned like being able to take items that don't spawn through beachcombing. Would be cool to see how much further you could take it.
Great idea and video. My view after watching is to possibly think in terms of the beachcomber character, not the mechanic. That would mean that anything on the ice is fair game because that's what the beachcomber character may be thinking.
This is an interesting experiment. I'm really glad you did it. It looks like the beached loot is a bit heavy for Interloper, which can really affect how fun the game is. As a side note, I think it's funny that you can actually survive on only beached loot... but it's not an enjoyable existence. It's like Golumn in The Lord of the Rings. He lives in shadow... in a kind of half-existence without any real enjoyment. lol.
This is a good challenge, I liked it, I tried it recently, but you only have to cook outside, then the wood burns longer! And it is very important to quickly find a second can for cooking.
I did have a couple of opinions... I do think you should be able to use whatever you find to make more things. For instance, as you mentioned, if you are able to last long enough to craft a bow, you should be able to hunt any animal and harvest all of it. I am a little split on the stones. Part of me thinks it should be ok if they are in the realm of the coast, and part says they have to wash up. I would doubt they will ever wash up. All your resources need to come from the beach, but once you get a few solid essentials, the sky is the limit. It really forces you to make decisions and be able to live on the brink of death constantly. Ultimately you are waiting for a run where you get at least one pack of matches or the mag lens.
You should try Ice sheet only lol, there's enough frozen lakes, like anything not directly connected to mainland.. or anything you can reach stranding on ice.
Hey Zak, there is one change that you can make which will make this possible without having to wait for something to spawn for you to start fires with. If you change starting gear to anything other than "Low", you will spawn with some type of matches. "Medium" gives you cardboard matches. Otherwise you are relying on a 1% chance of a flare, or a 0.75-5% of a flare or matches in certain containers.
I think in a run like this, you should limit yourself to the fishing huts --- but likewise then allow whatever loot they carry to be included in your pool of what to pick up. That allows for matches ... could easily allow for a bedroll if you're extremely lucky... and give you a fighting chance on potentially surviving. Even with that said, you never acquired sufficient firewood to honestly keep a fire going. The real critique of your run would be "Why ever did you take so many torches?????" You could have had a longer run if you had left the fire burn and used the time for more water. Little thing, but hey, it's the little things that keep you alive in this game.
Maybe it would be okay to loot cattails, only because they grow along the edge of the water. I think it could be counted as beach combing. 🤔 Your videos are always so much fun to watch. 😊
am trying a variant of your Beachcomb Only challenge, but I'm doing it on Stalker with Loper weather, and only staying in DP, Crumbling Hwy, and CH. I'm also including being able to loot fishing huts, and fire starting materials elsewhere. Having a blast!!
Pretty sure the only fire making tool that can spawn is the marine flare, I checked and matches, magnifying glass, and firestrikers are not part of the loot table for beachcombing.
you should do it where you can make use of something unless it consumes it, like you can make use of cooking pots in houses, you can't take it from the house tho, little things like matches must stay there but you can use them, same with meds, i mean if i had a place in the middle of nowhere i wouldnt mind you using my place to survive, just don't take the piss, so you can use tools if you put them back, you can take anything thats outside, but if its got an owner then its not yours. Call it an open door policy run
I love special and restrictive challenge runs! Whata about Beach only Stalker? There even whole simple arrows can spawn, maybe the extendet loot table provides a more interesting but still challenging gameplay. I just tried that in a couple runs for myslef, still really difficult! Anyways, thanks Zak!
How about that in this challenge you can loot everything that is on ice? including fishing cabins, there could be matches. and if it is still to complicated - then add a possibility to loot outdoors on islands for sticks, but dont loot houses there.
According to the wiki matches, firestrikers, and magnifying lenses don't spawn on beach combing. pbbles and stones and weapons and tools also dont spawn in interloper I say: Matches, climbing rope, fire starting tools, (pots/skillets?) and stone/pebbles (and the forge hammer) should all be lootable, that way you can make tools and weapons the rest has to be from beach combing. Use these rules and then do the Signal Void Challenge A "Living on the Wedge" challenge where you went to Coastal Highway and live on hunting/fishing and scavenging on the ice, and fishing huts. Only allowed to take things on the ice could be pretty good. (maybe add in the Hermit Hut and Rabbit Hutch cabins and their respective islands as lootable.) but no going onto the mainland or anything that attaches to the mainland.
I think to make it more playable and to have variant in playstyle, is to keep the challenge as is BUT add possibility to pick up 1-3 items during whole run. Would in my opinion open much more ways to start the run and have that extra possible utility extension. Great vid and very diffficult challenge indeed, will have a try!
At this point 27:10 it looks like while there's a lot of rare materials (cloth, leather, saplings, etc), there's not a lot of "core" items like matches, clothing, etc, in enough quantities to replace a normal run's strategy. So it doesn't look like beachcombing is "too" powerful. Though if you knew exactly the spawn spots and started in coastal highway (so you can move along to desolation point and back beachcombing) then maaaaaybe. It's a great supplement to those areas though. Also, how do you do those "flying" camera shots?
Winding river is between mystery lake and pleasant valley. The area between DO and CH is called Crumbling Highway. Sorry I just couldn't let this go. 😢
I've got no evidence but I'm sure the draw distance on objects has decreased. Was doing some beachcombing the other day and felt like I had to get closer than in the past for things to "pop"
Another possible variant: The player is allowed a certain minimal gear-up before the challenge starts. For example, you can play normally for long enough to find a box of matches and maybe a second recycled can. Then you go to the coast, feed and water yourself up, drop all other gear you picked up that you didn't start with, and the challenge commences. That would eliminate the RNG element of having to find the first box of matches so quickly, but you'd still need RNG luck to find matches thereafter. Hmm, how about you are also allowed to start with X number of stones, and you can do whatever you want with them, but those are all the stones you get and after you've thrown them, they're gone for good?
I think this challenge is "inevitable", obviously non of us will be playing for so long (I think), but at some point you would loot everything in the world and could rely only on Beach Combing, now, you would have mag lens so fire wouldn't be a problem, and you will be able to hunt for food and repair your tools with the materials you find, so yeah, mag lens + being able to hunt = win I guess.
As your child gets older you'll find more time again ❤. I've had 4 babies, and my online friends always got "mad" at me cause I'd be offline for a year every time lol 😂
With saplings, guts, sticks and feathers from beachcombing you could also eventually get the bow and the firehardened arrows, and then hunt rabbits and ptarmigans, if you had a source of fire.
What you really need is the ancient lost technology of "Rub stick on another stick really fast", or advanced survival techniques such as "melting snow in your mouth". Sometimes games make things way too formulaic.
Missed these long vids with super challenges, reminded me of nogoa series and outerloper. How did you get the “fly over” footage at the end? Is there a mod that allows you to play as a crow? 🙂
I would love to see new series from long dark on interloper but with mods, and guns allowed more like chill & making ur own base with plants and stuff like that
HEy Zak, quick question, in the 4th attempt while you were making water I belive you had prepared birch bark on you. Would there have been value in making the tea to drink it before sleeping? I belive that night you went to bed with full stomach from the fish and full hydration. Or would it have been to much waste of water?

Maybe it would break the balance of the game, but I wish you could rub 2 sticks together to try and start a fire. It sucks never finding any matches.
I think thats fine. Both sticks could break if you fail. But you have a 5 % Chance of succees for example. And it takes you double amount of time. And double tinder... so really just the last way out.
I like this idea. :)
I'm pretty sure there's a mod that does that. Better Fire? I think that's what it's called. All I know is that the mod is on xpazeman.
You missed a golden opportunity to name it: The Beach Comber.
A Canadian classic tv series.
Set in B.C.
oh didn´t know that one thanks 🙂
Darn you Zak!!! I started watching this video and before I knew it, your voice lulled me to sleep. Going to try this a second time. 😊
An idea for your main run if you run out of things to do: map the edges of thin ice to have an optical warning in the world
Other than that, keep up the good work and thank you for another relaxing longplay
Thank you. Yes, I have thought of that and it will definitely go on the list of lategame goals :)
You could add permission to loot boats, and fishing huts. This would still leave it extremely hard but more likely to get matches/flares.
Thats true. There are often matches in one of the CH fishing huts
What if the rule was anything anything that is on the sea ice? So fishing huts, boats and also the stones that are on the ice.
@@bethanyweber3989 That would maybe eliminate rabbits and ptarmigans.
@@arrbos Depends. If you follow the rule that you are allowed to use items allowed by the rules to get other items, then if stones on the sea ice were allowed, hunting with them (off the sea ice) could be allowed, too.
Don't boats only spawn during blizzards
A long vid!!!!!!!! Yayyyyyyy🎉🎉🎉🎉Thank you 😁😁😁😁
Let me tell you: everytime I go to sleep (in real life, I mean outside of the game) I say "ok, I'm gonna sleep ten hoursss" just like you, haha... Of course I can't sleep for so long because life and work and such, but the ten hoursss thing became something very funny for my girlfriend... anyway, thanks for teaching me how to play this hard but beatiful game, I hope to have some money soon so I can send you back at least something from all the content you do every week. Regards!
Zaknafein has the best of the best TLD Videos
I'd love to see another attempt at the challenge with the other options you mentioned like being able to take items that don't spawn through beachcombing. Would be cool to see how much further you could take it.
Love your Challenge ideas !
hey, I've finally learned how beachcombing works, thanks! xD
me too, but I think it's scary .. I did fall so often in the weak ice in FM that I don't really want to try 😅
Thanks for this! Also, the flyover is very cool!
Great idea and video. My view after watching is to possibly think in terms of the beachcomber character, not the mechanic. That would mean that anything on the ice is fair game because that's what the beachcomber character may be thinking.
I love beach combing i just started a crafted clothes only stalker run and it helps so much
This is an interesting experiment. He lives in shadow... in a kind of half-existence without any real enjoyment. lol.
It took me a few nights to finish this video but I really enjoyed it. Don’t think I would want to do this challenge though! Thanks zak!
Loving this one 😂
congratulations on the baby
I quit the LongDark for a year .... but still watch your video :)
if we wanted to make an easier version, you could include the boats and fishing huts.
the ice challange. u can use everything on the ice. cat tails does not count
omg i love this idea, i may actually do it
Plus, I don't think matches actually spawn on the beach according to the wiki so you have a chance there to find them.
Little thing, but hey, it's the little things that keep you alive in this game.
ketchup chips is really the worst thing you could find in such a run 😬 I definitely did drink more, just by watching this 😂
that long run, double wool toques. so lucky!
came for the challenge, stayed for the asmr
Maybe it would be okay to loot cattails, only because they grow along the edge of the water. I think it could be counted as beach combing. 🤔
Your videos are always so much fun to watch. 😊
Allowing to grab the mag lense makes this really possible
I love these challenges. I wonder which will be next, how about Cooking Book Food Only, Unyielding Gourmet.
Haha interesting one. Not sustainable, though.
This was fun! Thank You!
am trying a variant of your Beachcomb Only challenge, but I'm doing it on Stalker with Loper weather, and only staying in DP, Crumbling Hwy, and CH. I'm also including being able to loot fishing huts, and fire starting materials elsewhere. Having a blast!!
Pretty sure the only fire making tool that can spawn is the marine flare, I checked and matches, magnifying glass, and firestrikers are not part of the loot table for beachcombing.
“Tony Lozuto!?” I instantly broke 😂🤣
I feel like VERY fresh fish, like >90%, should have a lower risk of food poisoning, just based on sashimi.
Yeah I made a couple realism suggestions in hinterland forums and got very angrily voted off the island lol.
you should do it where you can make use of something unless it consumes it, like you can make use of cooking pots in houses, you can't take it from the house tho, little things like matches must stay there but you can use them, same with meds, i mean if i had a place in the middle of nowhere i wouldnt mind you using my place to survive, just don't take the piss, so you can use tools if you put them back, you can take anything thats outside, but if its got an owner then its not yours.
Your child is lucky to have you as a father.
How about that in this challenge you can loot everything that is on ice? including fishing cabins, there could be matches. and if it is still to complicated - then add a possibility to loot outdoors on islands for sticks, but dont loot houses there.
Yes this is one way to do it
According to the wiki matches, firestrikers, and magnifying lenses don't spawn on beach combing. pbbles and stones and weapons and tools also dont spawn in interloper
I say: Matches, climbing rope, fire starting tools, (pots/skillets?) and stone/pebbles (and the forge hammer) should all be lootable, that way you can make tools and weapons the rest has to be from beach combing. Use these rules and then do the Signal Void Challenge
A "Living on the Wedge" challenge where you went to Coastal Highway and live on hunting/fishing and scavenging on the ice, and fishing huts.
Haha yeah I misspoke once and everyone has noticed, apparently. It happens. Retrieval error.
This challenge would be interesting if you could custom start with a magnifying glass.
I've had 4 babies, and my online friends always got "mad" at me cause I'd be offline for a year every time lol
😂
this is really sad! one needs to enjoy the time, they grow up so fast ....
Next challenge: combine nogoa + outerloper + beachcombing only + constant blizzard
plus eternal night xD
With saplings, guts, sticks and feathers from beachcombing you could also eventually get the bow and the firehardened arrows, and then hunt rabbits and ptarmigans, if you had a source of fire.
True, though you need a knife or hatchet to make the bow
What you really need is the ancient lost technology of "Rub stick on another stick really fast", or advanced survival techniques such as "melting snow in your mouth".
Sometimes games make things way too formulaic.
Supposedly, the water your body uses to heat up snow in your mouth is more than you get from melting it.
dunno about Interloper, but on Stalker it seems almost overpowered (not that I would want it changed! :)) - found stim, hatchet, tools, ...
Unless you get a hammer and coal wash up on Interloper, then I believe the bow is not possible.
Missed these long vids with super challenges, reminded me of nogoa series and outerloper. How did you get the “fly over” footage at the end? Is there a mod that allows you to play as a crow? 🙂
It was a mod custom made for me by modder digitalzombie in the TLD modding community :)
Nice! Looks like you ended your “run” by flying into a window… poor crow 😢
Cool experiment Zak. I may try same but on stalker. Maybe then You have some chances for matches and some more stuff.
I like your videos and this game is pretty cool I first time I had played it was 5 months ago
My favorite ….My kingdom for a drink! 😂
What the heck! I had to get a new phone, and I just realized that none of my subscriptions on TH-cam transferred! Whew! Glad I noticed! 😮😮
I would love to see new series from long dark on interloper but with mods, and guns allowed more like chill & making ur own base with plants and stuff like that
Beachcombing only might be worth trying with one change: the character starts with a magnifying lens.
3:38:32 Really interesting video, thanks for this! Out of interest how did you make the flyover at the end of the video?
I asked the modding community to make me a mod, and user digitalzombie made a physics-based camera mod for me :)
It's awesome that it can be done! It looks very cool.
Still think the "can only enter a region once!" could be an interesting challenge.
That would be interesting but there would have to be exceptions for transiting.
why would a blizzard in Crumbling Highway reset the loot on Coastal Highway??
HEy Zak, quick question, in the 4th attempt while you were making water I belive you had prepared birch bark on you. Would there have been value in making the tea to drink it before sleeping? I belive that night you went to bed with full stomach from the fish and full hydration. Or would it have been to much waste of water?
I am not sure tbh - in the moment I valued the water highest.
