  • ***** I should like to thank Michael Railton of Sphere Videos for the filming and editing of this video *****
When searching through records it really is a pleasure to find a title that is not only so redolent of the 1920's but also contains a powerful performance to boot! Whilst the label credits the Sylvians it's actually the Savoy Orpheans, Cyril Ramon Newton's vocal just compliments this vibrant arrangement.
    Recorded 21st October 1927

Simply wonderful, both the music and knowing/seeing that PLETHORA of acetates/78's, etc...

Woah! This one had me swaying!
Love the video style when you do it like this!
The vocal chorus really evoked the perfect feeling for the tune too.
This vid is going right to my ''favorites''
Thank you for yet another great upload : )

This tune was written by Jack Yellen & Milton Ager. They also composed "Crazy words, crazy tune". The style is similar, a song about someone not liking modern rhythm but at the same time the tune makes the most of it.
      Glad you liked it. Thanks.

Lay that tuba in there, cat! And if I had your den, I would hire someone to change records while I sat there and listen to great music all day.

First audition for me. My ear was caught by the Goofus Five version when I began to listen jazz. Interesting in this one is the verse played in such a shadowy way, but that is because the poor guy was very annoyed by the musical craze of the time. No solos but a powerful rendition! Thank you very much for shearing your cozy music room and your Columbia portable phonograph!

Panachord You made me laugh, lol in fact.
Memory Lane arrived this morning. Read it at lunch time at work. Never has my lunch time gone so quickly. Your story of Jack Payne is nothing short of fascinating. Part 3 is eagerly awaited and later to discuss it with you when the story is concluded.

It is indeed an excellent number from the Savoy Orpheans. I particularly admire the drum work on this record. It rather sets it apart from most of their work at that time.

That Columbia portable sounds even better than an HMV model 101. 'Portable' should be taken with a huge pinch of salt though, it is incredibly hevy. Even though it hs a very short horn, the bass is incredibly deep for an acoustic gramophone.

1927 was a great year for Savoy Orpheans recordings. Indeed your recent Orpheans upload is from the session before this - only four days apart!

Indeed. It's testament to their high skill as a recording outfit that they were able to produce such high calibre records on days so close together

    • @jackpaynefan

It's a 113a model. Apologies for late reply.

    • @CPorter
      @CPorter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jackpaynefan well I guess late is better than never. I'm seeing a lot of Columbia machines recently that are made in a very similar style to the 163.
