This was a good listen on the second monitor
Not to be weird but you sir have a very calming, soothing voice to listen to. You made some great points and this podcast was an excellent listen. I especially enjoyed you taking about the younger generation you experienced as a drama teacher.
The perfect second monitor content
Great podcast i just wish you guy's talked with josh about osrs more josh seems like he has played the game but still has limited knowledge of what the game is like currently or put into better words what makes the game so fun and unique for example you could say combat but why combat why is combat so amazing on osrs well as far as i know all 3 of you know the deep mechanics behind combat the brew sips in between hits to not lose momentum the movement of the game the prayer switching i just wish you guys talked to him more about the new stuff they have added like all of the raids the new dt2 bosses and other difficult but fun parts of the game because the hardest boss josh has fought is vorkath and vorkath is now considered a mid tier boss i wish you guys could have got josh into trying some of the new stuff he reviews mmos so it's just upsetting that he is not experiencing the best osrs has to offer if he did then he may talk about it and then asmongold might watch it and then boom asmongold changes his opinion on osrs then plays the game and we see osrs become more massive and mainstream the economy of the game gets better as lots of new players come in and it would be great for the game overall
.. it seemed like rice and mint were a bit star struck they seemed alot more nervous than usual and did not ask or talk about the right things ....you guys brought up the new expansion but in the last 3 minutes...if you had talked about that earlier then that would have been great you could have collectively as a group watched the trailer and discuss it.. and lastly saying oh we don't get many updates when infact osrs gets more frequent updates than any other mmo. you guys play osrs for a living yet only one of you seems to be keeping track of the game i wish i was there with you guys i had just the right questions for josh ... still a enjoyable podcast who knows maybe josh could come on again one day and you could take into consideration the things i brought up.
Oh and one more thing a great thing that osrs does is it gives you the ability to do end game stuff without end game gear or 99s in your skills expecilly with the new content they have added if you master the bosses mechanics and the mechanics of the game you can take little to no damage at the bosses similar to playing dark souls with low stats and no armor I think that's one of the greatest things about osrs you can really really feel when you have upgraded your weapons and armor
Love his intro videos. Not that fight caves was hard, more a mental endurance game, but his video could easily get someone who just started the game and maybe even had stats boosted to be able to take the challenge and that person can get it. Looking for the inferno video.
It was so nice of josh to have these guys on his podcast for this episode! :D
Lol
Haha true.
Joshes description of childhood anticipation of games versus the instant gratification we feel today had me in nostalgia wonderland. I immediately teleported back to my local video store picking out a movie, the smell of popcorn, the mike and Ike dispenser that I could make work with a nickel instead of a quarter.
Then I was in GameStop 2 hours away from my hometown getting halo for the 1st time, convincing my mom to let me get a rated M game, reading everything in the booklet for the 2 hour drive home…. Absolutely awesome moment. Thank you for that.
I mean, you can still get DVDs and popcorn, and you can definitely still go out and buy physical new game releases. The truth is really, that you don't miss the "anticipation", you miss being a child and everything that comes with it.
@@FeiFongWang I can tell you for certain I don't miss being a child haha. For me the internet has killed anticipation. Without trying I know all about all the new media within days of it being announced or released.
@@FeiFongWangI love when folks try to tell people how they’re wrong about their own feelings 🤣 such a poor take and an inaccurate one to boot.
1:35:12 I am a legit new player.
I'm a 31 year old, father of a 11month old, and I picked up osrs about a week ago because i love classic WoW, but I can't play that on my phone, i can't play that on my laptop in bed next to my wife without the insane clicking irritating her. In classic WoW even early game dungeons take all of my attention so I can't play when watching my child, because with a child I OFTEN need to drop what I am doing to keep her safe, or entertain her. So, osrs seemed perfect, and honestly it is such a good game. I love reading the quests, i love the point and click gameplay because its so chill. I am sure later the game requires group play, but it seems like it will be on my terms, and not require hours of dedicated time multiple nights for raiding.
So you see, for me in my current situation its the perfect mmo to scratch that mmo itch, and i am actually surprised I didn't try it sooner.
Tldr, im a legit new player.
Add me Sonolorin
Good on you, may the number go up feeling never wane
You know, I really enjoy osrs content.
But Josh is making me realize why most osrs content creators never break out into less niche communities. They're like 6-8 charisma, where Josh is 10.
Cr1tikal doesn't count.
Critical is a homie, been watching him since charity youtube Era. He is the best youtuber next to Josh and markiplier to me.
Omg the "riding in the car waiting for street lights to zip by long enough to see where you are in pokemon" is a childhood experience I actually had, thank you for reviving that memory I forgot I had! Gaming early on had its own golden era qualities that kids now a days will never get to experience.
I must've done this or seen this happen before, because it feels so authentic. I should reflect on this.
2:05:45 he is missing the main point that Josh said.. gamers now want instant action not slow progression to get to actual exciting content.
GTA is the only MMORPG that is tailored to the new generation of gamers. You can instantly jump on the game and get the majority of the enticing part of the game available like robbing cars , running from cops, shootout with cops. Then you can slowly do the missions to get money and new content.
This was very fun to listen to; came from a clip that showed on my feed, and while the extent of my OSRS content exposure is watching Hanannie's shenanigans, I could very clearly understand almost everything in the video. Definetly gonna check on more episodes while I start grinding on any game!
Josh is a great guy, awesome to see him on here
This is one of the best crossovers I never expected.
28:00 This is kind of like people blaming Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares being the reason for the featured restaurants failing. Sometimes, no amount of critique or help can solve root issues of the restaurant/game/organization.
This was an absolute gem. I love all of these creators especially Josh. For everyone to be so genuinely involved in conversation about the game's past an future is so awesome to see.
what is going on with the audio, josh+ricecup are really quiet and josh has a weird echo
You guys mentioned the lack of mystery in games and it made me think of Noita. You've probably heard of it, but you should look into all the secret easter eggs and things players are still trying to figure out about the game as I believe since the source code is locked there is no way for players to truly figure out some of these secrets.
Is it just me or is this really quiet, cant hear them that well
Yeah I was listening whilst riding my bike and it was tough to hear with my airpods at full volume.
Alright I'll watch a bit of this, Josh is engaging with a great cast, RiceCup really represents the player well. Raikesy is good at what he does , is really community driven, has interacted with many players and devs for a long time.
"Runescape is good to play in a second monitor" OH MY GOD, JOSH NEVER BECAME WHAT HE HATED THE MOST, Josh, someone who loves Oldschool Runescape, ended up becoming what he loved the most: Second monitor content.
And just like that Josh became my favorite TH-cam creator.
Wanting to be Pierce Brosnan when you grow up and then end up sounding very similar to Pierce Brosnan!
50 minutes in and this RiceCup fellow hasn't said a single word lol. But on the real and real, as a 20 year RS vet and a huge Josh Strife Hayes fan, this conversation was amazing.
The EOC analysis is perfect. It wasn't that EOC made RuneScape stop being fun. It was just that EOC made me think, "if combat is going to be *like this*, then why shouldn't I just start playing a game that does it better?" (For me that ended up being SWTOR since it also came out soon after EOC, but I'm sure there would be a whole host of games that drew peopel away for similar reasons.)
I feel very much like a fly on the wall. I grew up without east access to internet as a kid and for a while never knew RuneScape existed. I discovered it and started fresh in 2023 on my first ever account. I feel like I’m showing up to the party late and have a missed out feeling. I really like the skilling and even if I don’t get a lava cape, I’ll be happy. Let’s hope it sticks around longer.
Hey at least you're here now! One of the best things about OSRS is that there is generally an active, and interactive community that you can take part in very easily to this day. Sure, there were lots of "Golden Age" moments growing up like certain skill releases, non-GE trading, clan wars, OG gear and training methods, but so much great content is being released freshly these days that you're essentially a part of the OSRS "Renaissance" without knowing it. You could always join a clan (I can link mine if you want here or elsewhere).
In general a lot of the moments I remember from 2004-2009 playing RS were quite fragmented, and I generally made little progress and discovered only about 30-40% of the game that was around back then purely because I had such little time. A lot of us players back then were young kids, and we're most definitely looking back with rose tinted glasses. It was an amazing sense of wonder and exploration, but at the same time, the game was still peppered with insane difficulty, account ruining bugs, rubbish customer support, terrible servers, scammers, lurers, and generally much less polish than there is today. Great times for sure, but today is also one of the greatest times for OSRS also.
Thank you guys for this podcast! It made my Mage Training Arena grind less insufferable. Made time fly by faster! Hope to see more content like this! Thank you@!
I could listen to Josh talk for hours
AMEN.
I would marry Josh and move in with him for that
It seems like Josh could listen to Josh talk for hours
@@Anonymous-sw5jx he definitely spoke for 75% of this video. When other people tried to speak he would interject then speak for 10 minutes uninterrupted
stg, I almost shed a tear when Josh described waiting for a passing streetlight to give you enough light to see where the hell you were while playing pokemon r/b lol
Man, I would not want Riot Games to own oldschool RuneScape because that would mean Tencent would own runescape and I don't trust Tencent with even one cent, let alone ten, or runescape.
For saradomins sake, please turn the audio up
As an avid 14 player, sorry about the idiots in the community. They're a problem within too, makes it hard to make constructive criticism on the game sometimes.
I have literally played 0 seconds of runescape ever.
But i enjoyed every second of this podcast.
All good takes and flow.
Cheers
I've been playing on and off for about 20 years, and I'm here to tell you not to start. It's the video game equivalent of micro-dosing on heroin. It just happened to be the best F2P computer game until TF2.
@@MK_ULTRA420 don't worry I won't start:) but I appreciate the game being there.
28:03 he's not a historian, he's the grim reaper for mmos 💀
where were you when tera was kill
2:14:20 "An MMO is a game about gaining permanent buffs to your character" -Josh (paraphrased a bit)
This is one of biggest reasons I stopped playing WoW, in favour of Runescape (OSRS mainly, but to some extent rs3), also New World.
WoW just got to the point where I never feel like my character maintained any power, while in a vacuum. I get stronger by doing a raid, but then it resets for the next tier, on top of full on expansion resets. I never have any option to do old things, nor reason to.
I started playing in 2001 and quit after EOC. I didn't know OSRS existed until it launched as a mobile game, and I've been playing (on RuneLite) ever since.
With that being said, imagine being introduced to OSRS as a mobile game. Does any other game have comparable breadth? It's unbelievable comparatively imo.
I believe new players will continue to be introduced to the game but primarily as a mobile game world. I see comparisons between 2001 and today from that perspective.
Damn I was gonna main screen this but.... Second monitor it is
Seriously though Josh is so thoughtful and entertaining to listen to. Top tier podcast glad you guys posted again!
Great vid. On the topic of skilling speed balance, it's more than just the xp/hr. It's also the gold/hr, intensity, difficulty, requirements, etc. I much rather them play around with those sorts of things than just releasing a mini game that straight gives more xp/hr than traditional methods.
This guy could literally say anything to me and id be like "wow that was so wise and insightful." Lol
Upper class British accent haha
It's really nice to watch and enjoy a channel of someone then slowly, over time, you realize he's a veteran of the same mmo community you are. Crazy good creator.
love the content but yall need some volume stabilization between the speaker. its dang hard to heard. give that audio engineer a raise. I would love to have an opinion on ricecup's thoughts but that would only happen if i could hear him.
Man Josh has some fascinating talking points. Made for a great listen.
I like that breakdown of Jagex's business decisions when it comes to earning and spending player goodwill. As someone who prefers RS3 to OSRS, I see that sort of push and pull, where a ton of players push back on an unpopular decision, but eventually after a few months, Jagex starts to monetize more aggressively again. They never make me mad enough to cancel my membership permanently, they're very good at stopping short of that.
This might be one of the best podcast episodes I’ve ever listened to 🎉🎉 lots of great talking points. Super interesting thanks guys
I never played RuneScape and started trying it this year because the amount of people who talk positively about it
Take ur time, but it is really the most authentic mmo on many lvls, don't let it take over ur life tho take ur time
Still playing? 😊
I remember waiting for an uncle to visit from the UK, to me in Pakistan and bring my copy of World of Warcraft vanilla. Installed it over the next few hours (and 5 CDs) and jumped right in. Those first few hours of the world... man ill never forget collecting tiger hides in Echo Isles. Truely a core memory.
37:37 My thoughts exactly
I’ll dabble in rs3 every few blue moons just cause I don’t want osrs’s bank to go away. People who make it their main game, I salute you, and ignore any toxic osrs players ribbing you
its because of josh strife hayes i got my firecape but he isnt just some guy i watched a guide on he is a role model someone i look up to and he is one of the smartest people that i enjoy watching he helped me with other bosses and although i never met him personally i would protect this man in the wilderness even at risk of all my items
To Josh’s point that MMO development takes so bloody long (particularly at the start), that’s a huge advantage for OSRS. Because the game is so lightweight on graphics especially and isn’t trying to compete on gigantic blow-you-away spectacle like other popular MMOs, it can move a lot quicker and implement ideas into content (and just as quickly pivot or backtrack on things that aren’t working). I think especially of how long and slow FF14’s development cycles are (especially thanks to Sqenix not putting enough money into the studio…)
If I put my son in front of one of the quest puzzles in OSRS and told him to complete it without the quest helper plugin I’d be waiting over a week for him to do it. 😂
hearing josh reference Philion and Will Tennyson was so cool. the dude really consumes a large variety of content which is awesome
never heard of this guy, but he has a great voice to listen to and ill give his content a go.
I'm a new player, never played it as a kid and I only started in the last year. The game fills a great niche in that it can be played in the background, like mentioned by Josh
Something that feels lost on the school argument is that over time curriculum expectations have gone up compared to older standards.
This is going to be area dependent as well but more often then not in hearing that the "standard" high school classes are what the advanced courses were when I was in school.
I think as technology and dissemination of information is getting better adults are expecting more from younger people and when they turn to media for enjoyment it's harder to get into a challenge if you've felt challenged during your 8-9 hour school day and the 1-3 hours of homework and projects you've had to work on.
Banger episode! Just watched his Adventure Quest video the other day, Legendary!
why are this channel's videos still consistently like half the volume of every other youtube video? is there any way you could boost the volume for future uploads?
Your guys' audio balance is out of whack, and over all volume really low.
Ricecup is almost impossible to hear, and Josh is low too.
elon musk buys runescape and calles it "Rune X"
funny cause rune x is the name of a rsps
he already copied the logo, might as well buy the original
wasted more time on runex then the actual game smh that shit was addicting for a bit
Also @ Raiksey just wanted to confirm that I noticed you had added those cuts to your last video when I watched it and I found them funny & tasteful.
O, the podcast is back! And such a wonderfull guest :)
OSRS, is one of the very few rare game, that actual listens to players, and gets player inputs into consideration for any updates.
First time i played runescape was on miniclip , rip club penguin
As a Zamorak Follower, I give new players around 100k gp worth of free stuff to keep them playing just long enough for the addiction to set in. One day they wake up and they just want to play OSRS.
this was an excellent episode. Josh is an amazing person and it was great to just listen to his opinions on things
surprisingly, the eve community tends to be a lot of family men with careers that actually dont have all day to stare at their screen anymore, pretty old crowd relatively. You are correct that there's no chance of spending enough time to make a good review.
I wish the old point and click Talisman Online MMORPG and Perfect World were still around. I loved those. 😢
Great conversation. The only point I'd dispute is that OSRS isn't getting any "new" players. Anecdotally I know of at least a couple of recent newcomers. Maybe not huge numbers of them - but that's okay, because once a player is hooked on OSRS they're here for life (perhaps with multi-year breaks now and then). So I think even if we just have a small but steady stream of newcomers, it should be enough to maintain a stable playerbase for many more years to come.
osrs3 is already dead, just like rs3 is
pvm scape, $15,000 for bis pay-to-win scape
Since OSRS is a great 2nd monitor game, this is a fitting pair.
Oooff. Don't agree but that's a great roast lol
yeah so you can play osrs on the other monitor
That was an amazing Podcast, Really enjoyed it Josh was a great guest
Love Josh, and quite happy to find your channel.
Oh man, I haven't caught a mintmadcow video in a while! TH-cam hasn't been giving me my Minty!
Sorry Mat K, but this might be my favorite podcast so far
To touch on one of the last points, the reason the Jagex team is good at identifying the holes in their game, is because they seemingly play their own game. It always feels like most developers are so out of tune with their game that it’s impossible that they actually play it. Which is another thing Jagex has going for them, they listen to their community and play the game with their community.
Great podcast everyone but damn... Josh is such a fantastic speaker. I’ve never seen him stumble over his own words or needing to rephrase. It’s unreal
Skills learned through teaching, as well as passion and knowledge! If you already know what to say beforehand, and really love the subject too, then the conversation is going to flow very naturally.
Wow I was not expecting this crossover !!! Legendzzz
I can barley hear ricecup compared to everyone else
such an amazing episode and props on the podcast in general thank you guys
Very enlightening, cohesive, and constructive podcast guys, Josh is a class act, great episode!
Old runescape is not the worst mmo ever. It inspires me to come back to runescape. All i did was chopping trees thats all i did to make money. and i got bored so i play roblox instead. And now im back to runescape. Its now my number 1 mmo game ever. I dont want it to die soon. :( My life wouldnt be the same without this game.
It's almost 200% guaranteed that if they have a cartoon version of themselves in the thumbnail, it's gonna be d0gshit opinions left and right.
I saw the thumbnail and thought Josh was finally setting up his retirement fund
This was one of the best episodes of the podcast yet
Numbers don't lie and osrs is exploding. You can't do in RS3 what they did and go against the community and want they want constantly. When you put players in control truly and follow that standard the game thrives. OSRS demonstrates this. Love osrs!
Joshstrife looks like a guy who frequents the medieval times plays
I think god spilled all of his charisma in josh's cup when he was made dude is super charismatic so nice to listen to
"Time you enjoy wasting, is not a wasted time"
I love this dude's personality. Charismatic AND wise.
Love how mesmerized you all look listening to Josh, you are clearly hung on each of his words.
Can't blame you, so was I. 😅👍
You all lost me when:
"Riots think of player first"
Never ever has play League of Legend
Only everything around it
That is a literall oxymoron.
You eat the marketing off shot, and asume this make them Good for gamers when LoL in itself has a renown reputation
And yes, i was a LoL player, 1 year before Brazilian server, until 2 years after.
And it only got worst after
My brother who even playd with a team of friend abandone it in 2020, he plays only Age of empires 2.
Ho, and balatro. But everyone is playing Balatro now
Me, a new player: I guess I don't exist.
Welcome to RuneScape! Leave while you still can!
But if you really want to stay, your first goal should be doing quests since that's the only part of the game that is better than other MMOs. For moneymaking, just buy a bond since there's no legal moneymaking method that beats an IRL minimum wage job besides endgame combat.
I have a contrevorsial take: WOW has to emd for MMOs to get big again. Of we looks at most modern MMOs that come out theyre alove for a month and end because the player base goes back to wow in some form or another. Kind of like how the FPS market can never really grow because COD cannibalises all the FPS players.
Not really, MMORPGs are a dying video game genre because they're the only one that demands grinding or money before the player can have fun, which is inherent to a monthly subscription and/or P2W model.
OSRS is different thanks to its accessibility via mobile and membership bonds.
Whoa whoa whoa Eve Online taking over Jagex? Heeelllll no they changed the game to be 100% p2w.
I like the part where Josh talked about how CEOs tank a company to make themselves look good. Almost thought he was talking about the US Republican party for a second.
Good podcast. Useful and informative discussion about Oldschool’s progress
NO. The worst mmo is absolutely Shroud of the Avatar. When you think of its origins, who made it, what happened, how many people were let down; compared to osrs lovingly being played in libraries? no contest
LFG WE MISSED YOU BOYS GREAT GUEST!
A game like Rust proves that you can have a heavily player controlled game. You do have to accept that the game is going to be toxic though. It's also why Rust has semi regular map wipes(resets) to keep it fairer and interesting. I would imagine that an mmo like that would have to be similar to Rust with a more accelerated loot progression with 2-3 month world resets. A permanent upgrade system could carry over through resets like a roguelite but it would have to be capped.
52:25 CCP Games buying Jagex is one of the worst things that could happen if you have ANY concern over monetization...
started on ios switched to jagex after getting combat lvl 40 ... cant login on that act on any launcher on my pc.
Most underrated podcast and guest
Never clicked one so fast
35:27 Poor Josh. This prophecy came to pass
Love the shoutout to Dunkey. It's a masterpiece!
I agree with this so much, the idea of climbing to 99 in those skills from midgame is brutal. I wanna have more activities like barrows we can do, yat help me level without doing it for the sake of levelling
