I remember reading this at 14. I was surprised by the changes in character in Magda and Nadine. But then I also fell out with my friends in Year 9, so it was comforting to have Ellie struggle with her friendships.
This is such a weird ending for a Jacqueline Wilson story, usually she’s all about girl power so I dunno why Ellie ends up sticking with that smarmy creep Russell. Also Nadine and Magda are genuinely terrible friends. In the previous books it’s a bit more balanced and you can see all three girls flaws and growing pains etc and how it effects how they treat each other. There are jealousies and rivalries and they can all be slightly selfish at times. But in this one Nadine and Magda are downright evil imo, with friends like these who needs enemies! I like to imagine after GCSE’s that Ellie moves on to a cool art college (but not the one her dad teaches at lol). And she’ll meet some genuine people truly on her wavelength and find true friends. And meet a lovely guy who isn’t a pathetic jealous creep like Russel and live happily ever after. Weird to think Ellie would be pushing 40 today!
I completely agree about Magda and Nadine. They were truly rotten friends and I never understood why Ellie was so obsessed with their them. I genuinely think she just wanted to be like them but their friendship only made her feel more insecure by comparison.

Russel only likes Ellie for her body he is a horrid creep who doesn't understand women's rights and he shows no interest in what Ellie likes and dislikes.
Not quite sure how I feel about this book. It sort of feels like Magda, Nadine and Russell become horrifyingly mean people overnight! Atleast with Russell though you could argue he had red flags even in the last book, and it would make sense for Ellie to overlook them initially because he’s the first guy to ever pay attention to her plus she has low self esteem. But now she’s grown more used to him she (and us as the reader) are finally seeing his true colours. I just don’t understand though why we don’t get a satisfying scene of her dumping him. He’s a nasty creep with zero redeemable qualities. With Nadine and Magda though these are meant to be her best friends! I guess the point is they’re jealous that their “plain” friend Ellie has ended up with a proper boyfriend before either of them. But honestly the way Magda was constantly belittling Russell to Ellie and undermining their relationship only to end up snogging him. Haha I know these are fictional children’s book characters but that is next level betrayal. There’s definitely some interesting character stuff to explore but this book feels rushed, I think one more book was needed to complete the series in a satisfying way.

@eddiekeddie that's what I was thinking. Even for the 2000s book is very serious and I feel like magdas assault, Nadine's online relationship and the kiss of the party was overlooked and they just kind of brushed it off.
Personally I think it’s down to the fact Russell’s never had a girlfriend before, so he doesn’t really know how to act appropriately around Ellie. I think he’s acting the way he thinks typical teenage relationships are meant to be.
I have one hour left yet, but I'm so angryyyyy!!! Nadine and Magda are so bad in this one, I feel like they never support Ellie the right way! I would never forgive a friend or a boyfriend that does that to me! To hell with everyone 👊🏻

Edit: I’m pretty sure that Anna did notice Ellie’s ring but just didn’t get the significance of it.
If you could make an audio book version of the Falling Apart book by Jacqueline Wilson I'd be very grateful. It was released in around 1989 and I first read and fell in love with the story at 13 years old in the summer of 2001.
Also he seems to go for his students, he says he flirts with them and both Anna and Ellie's mum were his students when he met them, Anna is said to be 27 and Eggs is 6, so she must have had him when she was 21, and therefore she would have been about 19 or 20 when they got together, which is legal but he does seem to have a thing for very young women.
