Everything is on a diminishing return curve, even the diminishing return curve. How many times can you hop before you can't hop anymore or if the next hop is not worth it? Eventually, things are no longer always "better". You start moving laterally or you fit different needs which aren't "better" or "worse".
Interesting story about Alpha's weak coherence and NT crashing. It's very difficult to get everything right or at least close enough to meet the hardware software contact before you are really aware how critical it is.
