I modded my C64Mini joystick with a DB9 port so I can plug authentic C64/Atari joysticks into it, so the C64Mini joystick basically acts as a DB9 to USB adapter, whether using it with the C64Mini or with Vice on a PC, as well as serving as a joystick extension cord. The original stick has the same mushy feeling as the C64DTV sticks and I really don't care for it. This mod allows me to use much more comfortable joysticks.
@@iNimbleSloth No, just a DB9 port I had with those little set screws for panel mounting, with wires soldered directly to the board in the lines to the button contacts. That way, the vintage joystick is what's making contact to complete the circuits instead of the soft buttons on the board.
Yeah, at £19.99 from Argos and Game, a great Christmas stocking filler for the retro game geek or someone who is a little curious about old skool gaming but doesn't want to spend a small fortune. Either an entry path into the scene or if they are lucky enough to already have a TheC64, then a second controller for multiplayer games.
My main worry was, "Would Windows automatically recognise it and install drivers". Since TheC64 is Linxux based, I'd also like to see what happens in Ubuntu - does it just work, or is it a faff to get it working?
A couple of things that initially come to mind are; check that all Windows updates are applied and check that you have the latest graphics driver installed.
I connected the RGL002 joystick (The one that comes with the American version of TheC64 Mini) to a windows computer but I just got a device not recognized error. ¿Do I need to install a driver first?
For me there was no need to install a driver, just plug and play. Back when I recorded the video I was using Windows 10, not tried on 11 but would assume it should be the same.
@@iNimbleSlothnever mind. Just realised the joystick is broken. I just purchased TheC64 mini today and first thing I tried was connecting the joystick to the PC, but when connected to TheC64 mini it didn't work too, so it is the joystick what is wrong, not the computer. I will go to the shop to return it and get another one.
I want to try this in Ubuntu, since this is a pretty popular distro. My main concern is drivers, Windows handled that part great, let's see how Ubuntu handles it...
@@iNimbleSloth Going by the way it works in Windows I am fairly sure that it will work on Linux. Game controllers like this use standardised routines. Drivers would only be an issue if you had to download a special driver from the manufacturers website rather than the normal controller routines.
It's not a true C64 experience without the Wico Boss joystick. So many memories of mashing it until it broke. It took awhile though.
Just what I was wondering , thanks

Nice, what did you use? An off the shelf adaptor, kit, Arduino or similar?

I suppose if your budget is tight it's a reasonable option or if you're new to the system an affordable taster!

One would think it would work base on that ThEC64 is using VICE

playing CSGO with TheC64 joystick (GONE WRONG) (GONE SEXUAL)
I don't get it, how can you connect a C64 joystick up to a PC? Those used a 9 pin connector, something that PCs haven't had for a long long time.
It's the new USB "TheC64" joystick - Check out th-cam.com/video/fcVCEtM70TY/w-d-xo.html to see TheC64.
I get audio from a game but no video, just a gray window with options at the upper-left corner. Could the problem be that I’m running Windows 7?

Too bad this doesn't work for Vice on Linux. It's much more primitiv
Does it work straight out of the box with Mac?
I've not got a Mac to try it with 😢
