      I used to live in Brooklyn and they would sometimes go to a local dance studio at night to rehearsh. All along 7th Ave. in Park Slope there would be crowds of us just standing there swaying and dancing. I'm 77 and this song still makes me cry.

    Many black Soldiers,Sailors,Airmen and Marines served to protect and serve this country. I salute The 10th cavalry,Tuskegee Airmen,Triple Nickel Partroopers, Montford Point Marines. When will they call you a man? No need to ask. We shed blood and endured discrimination. We fought throughout the wars both foreign and domestic.

      Also we need to teach our young about all the inventions not sone bit all inventions were by black wooly haired human beings like Lewis Lattimer, Philip Emeagwali, these are the real inventors who did what Alexander G Bell, Tesla (a fabricated man) Thomas Edison, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs (both transgendered women) took credit for. The fake reality the rulers created are full of lies. For real truth go to Tricksofthestrade channel, get truth from evidence and facts, not the indoctrination centers and media.

      My Uncles Ernest Johnson and Greenbury Johnson of Laytonsville Montgomery County Maryland were Buffalo Soldiers and their father John E Johnson and uncles Wilson Lincoln Linkum and Perry Lincoln Linkum were all Civil War Veterans. My oldest brother bought the album "We Came To Play" and we were forever hooked on the Persuasions. We saw them many times over the years and even the children and now the grandchildren all know the Persuasions. May they rest in Peace, Love and Harmony in Heaven.❤

      I just found this today due to a friend . I explained to her that I was 19 sitting on the living room floor crying my eyes out because my favorite brother had been sent to Vietnam. I was so upset when that first letter came marked "freemail." I didn't want to believe him when he told me he was going...man, this song hit home today as it did in 71. Thank you for your service 🙏🏾 ❤️ as my brother would say Hoorah.

Well we fired our guns and the British kept a runnin’ props to this. Badass history here. Comanche the Brave Horse, you gave your all. The remembered fights.

      I'm intrigued. I grew up listening to this with my dad. He was a Dj and had a very large catalog of so many different genres, styles, very not one style kinda guy. When I was older and I went to visit him I asked him about this very song and who was it, I wanted to hear it. He was shocked that I remembered and that I asked about it. He played it for me. I have his album collection now and it's now a staple in my catalog. I wish I could have heard this in person, on a street no less. The music makes me cry for many reasons, flooded with memories good and bad. I hope when I am old, older than I currently am that my son also continues to appreciate the music he is growing up with that I have been playing, listening to and he remembers this to pass along also.

    Awesome group of guys. My brother (Nip) introduced me to their beautiful harmony. He loved them and went to every show when they came to Philadelphia, PA He got to meet them and became great friends. They met my entire family. He was their biggest fan and was most proud of the pictures they all took together. My favorite is : I Got A Message From Maria", My only regret is that I didn't get to me them. I was living in Texas but the memories of the stories and fun ( my brother told me) they shared whenever they came to Philly still resonates in my heart. My family has passed on now and its just me and I'm still listening in 2019 to their sweet harmony and think of the "Good Times" they shared with my family. R.I.P. to The Persuasions who have passed on.

    I recall this extraordinary talent from the 1970's. Back in the 1950's acapella music was most popular in the city streets. Few was good enough to make record deals using musical instruments like Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers. From all the different acapella groups I've heard in the past 60 plus years, The Persuasions are the very best. Great post! Thank U.

    I grew up on the west side of Cincinnati listening to The Persuasions among other great groups like The O'Jays, The Temptations, The Isley Brothers and so on. My friends never understood why or how I could like R&B, Soul and yes, even Disco, lol. My favorite song by The Persuasions is a song I first heard by Curtis Mayfield named "People Get Ready".
    So many great memories hearing this again...thank you for posting.

      Chris Campbell - 3 years late(r) for this, but still..... seek Eva Cassidy's rendition of "People Get Ready". Really sweet song that I'd assumed was composed by Jeff Beck as he'd performed it early in his discography. Curtis Mayfield's inspiration echos on :)

      @@jlutostanski1650 Definitely the Chambers Brothers are one of the underrated groups from back in the day! We saw them a lot at Fillmore East & other places, mostly white audience -- usually opening acts, not headliners (wonder why, hmmmm). That album with People Get Ready, I Can't Stand It, & psychedelicized "Time" -- one of the great overlooked gems (no matter what Iggy Pop says!).
      Love it that Questlove included them in Summer of Soul. Always wondered how they would be received by a mostly black audience. Great that they, Fifth Dimension, Sly were there with all the more "mainstream" R&B artists. That was a wonderful time for music, when audiences -- black and white -- were open-minded & eager to hear all kinds of music.

      That was not a tribute band she would have seen. True, Jerry Lawson, the original lead, left, and Tubo and Sweet Joe have passed, but original members Jimmy Hayes and Jayotis Washington are still performing with the group to this day. It's fair to say that the group's sound may have changed, but they're not impostors.

    • @JulieL
      @JulieL 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes well I am not wanting to argue. Just sharing a different perspective than yours. And in my opinion and that of attorneys who deal with such matters when Mick & Keith leave the Stones and other originals remain, they will no longer be The Stones. In fact Mick and Keith would have their attorneys all over it to stop the "impostors" from using the name and if they were allowed to include the name then you can be sure Mick's attorney would stipulate they must advertise as a TRIBUTE BAND. And the same as if 2 members of The Beatles left and 2 remained...

    I grew up attending a small Baptist Church in central Florida. Jerry Lawson was a lead singer for the Young Adult Choir. I looked to services on the Sundays they sang!

    They opened for Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention at Carnegie Hall in October, there's about 25-30 mins of their performance in the boxed set for the two MOI shows.
