BMW has executed a savvy marketing move with the initial unveiling of its polarizing XM sport activity vehicle, showcasing its most potent iterations to drum up excitement. Now, the automaker introduces the entry-level variant in Europe, featuring less power than expected for an M flagship, especially given its substantial size and weight.
However, fret not, as BMW understands your primary interest lies in the price tag, and it delivers on that front, starting at a staggering £109,825 in the UK. Who needs excessive power when you can boast such an impressive price, right?
As previously discussed, the XM 50e boasts a hybrid powertrain combining a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine with an integrated electric motor within the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. This setup churns out 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
With this powertrain, the XM 50e can reach a top speed of 155 mph, and BMW has disclosed it can sprint from zero to 62 mph in a respectable 5.1 seconds. While commendable, this figure falls short compared to other M branded vehicles.
For instance, the V8-powered XM with 653 hp achieves the same sprint nearly a second faster at 4.3 seconds, while the range-topping 748 hp XM Label edition can hit 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
Interestingly, the XM 50e lags behind a diesel-powered X3 M40d, reaching 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds, starting at £65,250 (around US$83,100). Even the 4-cylinder, 302 hp M235i Gran Coupe, priced at $48,300 in the States, achieves the same sprint in 4.9 seconds, despite not being full-blown M models but belonging to the entry M Performance series.
Among BMW's lineup of M and M Performance models, only the X1 and X2 M35i take longer to hit 100 km/h than the base XM, both clocking in at 5.4 seconds.
On the bright side, BMW touts the XM 50e as the most efficient model in the lineup, benefiting from its plug-in hybrid powertrain. Capable of traveling 52 miles on electric power alone, it boasts an impressive fuel efficiency rating of up to 217 MPG on the WLTP test cycle.
The XM 50e will feature distinctive design cues distinguishing it as the entry-level model, including a black accent band along the vehicle's side, Pearl-effect chrome trim surrounding the massive grille and rear diffuser, and a high-gloss black tailpipe with silver borders.
If these features pique your interest, you'll be pleased to know that production of the XM 50e commences in March.
