I suspect this mandolin needs new strings. I played this instrument's sister at Tucson Folk Music a number of years ago. Like this one, it was incredible. I'm sorry I didn't buy it on the spot. The neck was perfect and made it so easily playable. It's good to see these beauties are still around and ready to be played.
0:29 "nearly a hundred years old" . . . and 0:07 "this is a 1917 the Gibson mandolin" . . . OK, so was this filmed about a decade ago, or is your arithmetic a bit out of shape, TJ?
Ha! For whatever reason while filming my brain kept doing the math as a 1927 mandolin…. And then while I was editing I realized … My engineering degree would not be proud.
I wish I could here it when it's in tune.
sounds and looks like a nice condition Gibson. more than likely original Handel tuner buttons with the inlaid wire.

Yea could use a fresh set, but with all the character it seemed like a fun thing to play it “as-is” out of the case!
Shouldn't you tune it before making a video?
Ha! I have a 100+ y/o Gibson A mandolin.
definitely jealous! It was a real pleasure being able to play that instrument. I'm sure yours is amazing as well!
