      If they are doing everything data driven, because bedrock do so, data driven blocks are coming soon.

      @@BryanLu0 since 1.20.4 I believe, on the modding scene, when registering a block, we need to provide a codec, which is used for data driven objects. Even though it is yet not active, it is however sure that it will come

    0:42 It's worth noting that there is also a new chicken/variant component that can be put on eggs to control the variant of the chicken it can hatch.

      ‘minecraft:{animal}/variant’ components are so weird and I hope they get unified into just a variant component soon. The same goes for separate data files for variant textures.

    I'd love to see data driven variants for all mobs, even if they don't all get a use in vanilla. Having the functionality for it would mean big things for creators.

    I applaud Mojang in their efforts to make things more data driven. I love how variants are now data driven and I can see this being useful for a lot of people. This particular update with the chickens does expose something that modders and datapack creators have long complained about though, the ability to add to a loot table. I know that we can override the loot table for the eggs, but I have to take all the vanilla table plus my custom chicken. What happens when I have two datapacks that have custom chickens? Even if both datapack creators include the full vanilla loot table for eggs plus their own chicken, only one of the custom chickens will have eggs since each loot table overwrites the other. It would be nice to see Mojang find a way to merge loot tables so that datapack creators could override if they want to, but otherwise merge with the existing table. That way we could merge in our custom eggs without needing to include the vanilla stuff, and you could have multiple datapacks with chickens, and all could have custom eggs. Similar issues have been around for a long time with other loot tables where a creator simply wants to add an additional item to an existing loot table (like stronghold chests, village chests, etc) but has to include the entire vanilla one and then multiple data packs can interfere with each other. I know you can get over this with an actual mod and using code, but it would be nice to see Mojang come up with a way to do this entirely with data, kind of like how they did with tags, where you can do a replace: false to have it merge. I know loot tables are more complex than a tag list so it wouldn't be as easy, but it would be nice to have some way to merge stuff into a loot table rather than simply replace it. Maybe someone who works a Mojang will see this comment and pass it along :) Thank you slicelime for your videos on the new drop features, and especially the data pack changes. They are always informative.

    Well, this explains why the armor statues datapack exploded.
    Not that I'm complaining, snapshots are play at your own risk, I was just surprised.

    Having access to equipment and saddle slots for players is cool for servers that might want to add new types of equipment

    The new egg items should be reverted to be only the original chicken egg with a new component that specifies an entity and variant along with a model that can change the texture alongside it, so we can make the chicken variants with their respective eggs

    Question about edible_for_sheep, is the Grass Block a part of this? I'm guessing the fact that it converts Grass Blocks into Dirt is hard-coded still since it seems like sheep only eat the 2D "X" shape Grass and Grass blocks are not a part of this tag.

      You'd have to define a replacement block somehow, otherwise sheep could e.g. convert stone to dirt. That's somewhat closer to recipe semantics than to block tags. (Although recipes technically convert items, not blocks.)

      The grass block is not a part of that tag and is indeed hardcoded. Only short grass, short dry grass, and tall dry grass are part of the tag by default. Any block that is in the tag will get destroyed without replacement.

    I hope they unite data-driven mob variants under one system instead of per-mob. let us define our own conditions and set our own models!

    once again I am here to beg Mojang to add data driven entity models and entity textures to all mobs. There are already different cow and chicken mob models so allow us to create our own. I really want to be able to make custom armor models without the use of mods so i can change the players skin to a different one. Please I beg of you Mojang this will be without a doubt, the greatest update of all time if you add data driven entity models and data driven entity textures to all mobs.

    Odd. Apparently I've had a second Google account since 2012, which remains unused. I've only just received the notification for it, after complaining here--literally after a decade of not knowing about it. Google's AI must want me to join in, and make friends, maybe start with a clean slate. I think possibly I made it at the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic, but didn't have a computer capable of running it. Anyway, given your prodigious intellect and memory, you should recognize me, so we'll see how long this Discord membership lasts now I'm paying you twice a month.
