As a photographer who posts on instagram I never share my locations and I see alot of others who do the same thing. Things need to be kept a secret and then only then you can find it when the sole purpose is to go out and to explore.

I’ve always disliked the thought of doing something for the sake of being able to post about it, it takes the value away from experience and drains the beauty. How can you truly appreciate culture and nature when you’re thinking about how you can exploit it to gain a couple likes? Smell the roses people, run towards unfamiliar terrains and live your life for you, that’s where the beauty is. That’s my thought of the day, be happy and be safe
(Edit) When I have those truly special experiences on trips I like to sit down and draw what’s around me, this allows me to carefully study everything around me as I translate it to paper and I find that the drawings I draw are much more special to me then the pictures I take and I would totally recommend taking a small sketch book next time you go out and do something new.
The sketchbook idea is so cool! I'm going on a road-trip this weekend to a scenic area and I think I'll give it a go. :)

J NG I feel as if the ones with more effort are better, like how he said about the potato rock area, people took time and money to get here, and they enjoy it more. I feel like the ones with more effort are less likely to be affected by the popularity syndrome, unlike the ones that are easy to get to, like just get off from tour bus, snap a pic, and leave, it kinda makes it worse. I also feel like it would be worth it to take time to get somewhere and then one would enjoy the view more. Only the popular places get ruined, not the ones with many, like what you said

There’s a fine line between going to a spot solely to take a photo and taking a photo while going to the spot. Taking a photo to create a memory to go along with it. And taking a photo as an added bonus...

I like the idea of 'you have to earn the photo'. I realized that this is how Norway likely manages its most popular, Instagram-overcrowded places. To get to Trolltunga (the super iconic rock sticking out like a tongue) you have to hike 13 kilometers (one way) and pay roughly 60 USD for parking that finances keeping the place clean. And by no means they want to make it more accessible, which is really good. At the end of the hike, it's a happy moment where you share your achievement. You feel how people are connected better, helpful to each other and more respectful to the nature.
I have always felt bad about this.
This whole internet culture and seeing these beautiful sceneries on social media is what actually made me dabble in photography, and now it’s one of my hobbies. Landscape photography especially. I’m still learning a lot, but i’ll get there someday. It has changed my view on the world.
I went to the Sahara desert with school, and I looked forward to it, because it was one of the places on earth I wanted to visit really badly, for it’s pure beauty and amazing photography opportunities.
When I arrived, I saw this very effect. People gathering to get the picture, and that being their main goal. It was only after a long hike that I experienced what I had come there for. Just the sheer vastness of the desert. it was beautiful. I got out my camera and took my pictures. Then I was done. And I didn’t feel that much better about it. I felt like I had done it unjustice. This desert had been there for millions of years. It didn’t deserve just a couple of pictures. So I spent the biggest part of the evening there. No one there apart from me and 2 friends, who had taken the time to hike to the biggest dune in the area for some hours. Again, I felt like I wasn’t worthy of it with my camera. I know that sounds dramatic, but it also made me realize that nature and the earth are too pristine and old to be taken just a few pictures of. This goes for other landmarks as well. You need to earn it.
It has raised my awareness of the pristine earth, and how it must be protected from ourselves. And yes, we can take pictures. But you need to earn it, and not that its just a quick ordeal. As i said, the earth is worth more than 5 minutes and a snap.
ooooor you could actually do something to help save the environment, rather than wasting the greater part of your day out of some misplaced sense of ...repayment. Too many feelings over a landscape that cares nothing about human life. If one the other hand, you care about it as a place for humans, as a home, then taking care of it would make more sense. Recycling, avoiding waste, and being conscious about products that are harmful for the environment all would help far more than feeling bad about your photography.

Serenity and peace is internal, find it wherever you are and photograph when you see a shot, not the same 10k.
As an outdoor educator/guide, environmental science and photographer who has always adventured since childhood, this is real.
I live in the Sydney region and what was within an hr or 2 was generally peaceful, now I need go 3-4hrs or days away.
However, this gets me deeper in nature which I appreciate more than a photo.

The kind of video that gets million views in short time!
A good example of doing excercise for a view is the Abel Tasman in New Zealand. People hike the full trail over three days. What’s amazing is there are so many places along this hike that are truly beautiful and secret. Having been there myself, me and my siblings and cousins discovered a little cove next to a camp site. The only way to get there is by swimming around. We couldn’t take photos because our phones couldn’t go through water. Truly an awesome experience. Biking trails can be especially rewarding too. I went mountain biking in Wellington and discovered some truly beautiful views, the harsh winds made everything just that extra bit challenging, it felt like such a rewarding experience. Things like these are great because you can stop anywhere to take a photo instead of having one crowded ass place full of people. You can discover your own favourite spots on an adventure.
No one is ruining anything. People are admiring nature and sharing it with others. Mindset is everything.

Another thing to note: Now that so many people have good-quality cameras in their pockets at all times, it makes it much more difficult for nature photographers to make good profit. You don't have to put too much work into getting a breathtaking photo anymore, and it makes photography really kind of lose its value.

I have a policy against visiting travel blog destinations, esp. after staying in Bali for a year.
- "Oh oh, you should see that overcrowded temple, or that littered to death beach or that architecturally out-of-place building, everybody says it's great". It most likely isn't.
By visiting "common interest places" you're doing yourself a disservice.
Drive off that road, go to that weird thing over there, explore.
If you don't find anything - well, it happens when exploring. But if you do - you just found something travel blogs will never show you.

This is a similar problem to a local secret place that is owned by my family in the Philippines. My family owns land that has a small waterfall. Word was spread by mouth and now more and more people are trespassing my family's land by creating a path from the road to the place. My family is too kind and doesn't want to stop people from coming in. It's getting worse every year with sharing on social media and we do not know what to do.
If you want it to stop, and are willing to chip into your pocket. Put an electric fence around the area so they'd face consequences for tresspassing
Put a sign stating that its private property and trespassing is a crime and yada-yada. It wont deter most but it will scare a few away from the area.
This video is awesome. This is what I have concerns about too. There is no doubt we are the problem, but seeing people being respectful to each other, and especially to the nature is a very positive signal. There are places that have quota or requirement for permits, that sucks-yes. But knowing that it’s necessary, I’m fine with it.
For me personally, I see this effect almost every where I’ve been (Grand Canyon, sequoia nps, sedona, even 20 miles from my home: Huntington beach). I always try to go a bit further, to a less attractive spots, spend time in there alone or with my friends. And then try to capture the beauty of those not so popular spots. I agree with you, it’s about the experience, not just the photo

Crowed places due tourism was always a thing and also there's people that find it boring to look at a landscape just to "appreciate it". This is not at all a big deal, people like to complain about everything.
Just to be clear I'm not hating on the video itself but the "problem" it portrays. I think the filmography and narrative was amazing, well done

As a local tour operator operating in the italian Dolomites since 2000 we saw so much changing in this last 20 years. Sightseeing tourism has dramatically changed ... for the worst. For our area the first big problem is that tourists come and want to visit the most clicked/liked locations without any preparation or equipment. We are already at that point that rescue teams need to help people that got to places without the right shoes or simply because some suffer from vertigo, but didn't know that for reaching some of the best spots you can't have this problem. Tourists need to begin to trust local tourist boards more than just a picture on Instagram in order to not end in dangerous situations.
It's not only Instagram which uploads a photo or video. It was mainly used for sharing multimedia. But Facebook, Twitter, or other social apps can have the same purpose as Instagram have. So basically, it was accurately named: *Social Media Effect.* But the _Instagram Effect_ is also good for the term though..
I'm not into taking photos for likes. It just sounds stupid to me. I would rather look at the beautiful views for memories then just selfie and quick photo.

To those saying it’s not Instagram or Facebook or stuff like that. Think about it this way, if social media was not here many places would not be as crowded and people would spend more time there.
My partner and I couldn't believe the line at a desert monument we visited recently. We wanted a photo for our own memories but to wait in line for an hour in that heat, while people took forever taking different poses meant we walked away without.
I live in cornwall, very much discovered part of england, at the very south. We get ignorant tourists with huge cars driving around our narrow country lanes all the time, beeping at everyone. It'[s ridiculous.
Recreating the Apple wallpapers convinced me to subscribe.. this video convinced me to turn notifications on. I like what you do.. it’s real and I hope you keep it real down the line.
But what if you're going there, you're getting picture for yourself and staying there to admire nature.
For example, I'm rarely taking pics but if I do, it's just only to store memories, not for crappy instagram.
So it's not a huge crime, I think. It's a crime when you're leaving trash around or ruining nature, like stepping on the poppies.
Geotagging is a huge issue. If people had to do just a bit of effort to find out where a location is, that would cut the number of people in half.
There is legendary rock in the Sierra Nevada (I won't reveal its name). As a photographer, I made it my mission to shoot it at sunrise. The location of it has never been revealed. But after 10 hours of triangulating landmarks in existing photos and scouring Google Earth, I managed to estimate its location to about 1 square mile. A few weeks later, I went there, hiked 20min, climbed several boulders and found it. I came back for sunrise, and there was NO ONE. This was one of the most fulfilling photography experiences.
For a second there I thought I was watching a Netflix special. The quality of your content is phenomenal
Interesting topic! Personally i get so turned off by these instagram spots and i don't get the point about taking the exact same photo as everyone else. Instagram can feel like an endless re-run sometimes.

If you have ever been to China this situation is much worse. I’ve been to a state park of China for videography contest, almost half of my footages are unavoidably contains massive groups of people
I feel like a boomer watching this.
1.) Explore the unbeaten paths.
2.) Actually experience the place, rather than looking on a screen.
3.) Use photos as memories, not trophies. That can also include being artistic.
4.) Geotag, but don't give the precise location. For example, only the name of the park or mountain.
This doesn't only preserve these places, but it also makes your Instagram account more unique from others.

Usually I take a picture of a mountain from fair away then look at it for a few minutes and move on. (I don’t have any social medias anyway, I want to do something in photography someday) I won’t sit on the edge of a cliff to take a bunch of pictures. If I’m in a passenger seat of a car, I’ll take a picture from the car window. But it is sad when beautiful places are ruined by media. (Also interesting fact: it has been proved that when people take pictures and videos, and that is all they are there for, then most of the time people don’t even really remember the experience)

I feel ya, but, let's not give Instagram too much credit here. I think it's the human condition that has caused the problem. I've taken my share of pictures of Bixby bridge, and the like. It's the increasing population is causing the disregard for the beauty of nature. However, I will say the increase of disrespect for the law is very prevalent and I guess has more to do with people saying "I want that too" is causing a problem. During the TX bluebonnet season, everyone wants to use their mobile phone camera to capture that classic photo of their dog in the bluebonnets, while right out of frame is the sign that says please keep off the meadow. Go ahead google this: "tx bluebonnets and dogs" People can be really selfish jerks. Now there is a connection between the ease of access and increased numbers. Like you experienced at Potato Chip Rock. A fee and then a hike? Much like Glacier Point Rock in Yosemite, it takes a bit of work to get there.

I don't think Instagram makes people more enjoy nature, but people do go outside more, and that makes people more enjoy nature. On the other hand, social media also makes people sitting inside more, alone on their phones, so it might just be an illusion. The difference being: Instagram makes people go to specific places outside, namely the tourist hotspots.
The problem is that when people go to a really nice place, somewhere where nobody ever was before, of course they are going to share it! And now, with globalisation and the internet, it means that now everyone will come to that place, which is really sad. A lot of quiet places simply lose their beauty when there are groups of tourists around.
My own small solution:
I started drawing a few years ago, and it completely changed my way of visiting these so-called hotspots. Instead of being there for a quick photo, I would draw the landscape (or sometimes even paint with watercolor) and really immerse myself. The time I spent drawing has some amazing benefits.
First, Im taking more time to enjoy the landscape, more time to look at stuff and more time to create memories on a specific place. Drawing forces you to look at the world in a different way.
Second, the drawing I make is a reflection of the visit. When it is a quick visit, I will have a simple sketch. When there is snow and my hands are freezing, my drawing will be less precise. Or that moment I wasn't allowed to paint in a museum and was asked to stop, my little sketch would be only halfway. The drawing has now become a memory. Photos just don't have that physicality.
Third, my drawing skills have seen enormous improvements. Everyone can learn it, it just takes some practice. And by taking a sketchbook instead of a camera, believe me, you have enough moments to practice. Plus: drawing is a really fun and calm exercise I can recommend to everyone.
It is not thee solution, but I think it does help in a lot of ways.

I think the busses that stop for a quick snap is because the tours have a tight schedule. I went to Californi last year and we only had like a 10 minute break to snap shots of a popular destination.
This is so trueeee ... I´m a photographer and filmmaker and i love the nature because in small tropical island... and i love take photos ... but i spend lot a time watching the view before ever taking any photo... This is why more and more i'm not scrolling on instagram spots to see ... i just walk and walk and see differents "tourist" spots.... anyway ...great video .. you should one day visit my island ( Madeira island )

I feel like tourism comes with photography nowadays since we all have access to it. During my roadtrip as an European in California I documented EVERYTHING. In my honest opinion mostly our eastern friends (read: chinese, japanese tourists) are truely obsessed with taking the perfect picture.
Everywhere I went, from the horseshoe bend to the Grand Canyon these people were taking massive risks to take the perfect photograph. It has come to my attention as well that, if there is any littering going on, it is coming from this same exact group.
Also to something to keep in mind: most people in the areas you visit in the video have paid THOUSANDS of dollars to get there. Of course they are going to snap a picture, and of course they want the perfect one.
I really love nature and taking photos of nature. However, it is impossible to see anything like those within my own country. That’s why I treasure and mind my step when I visit such places. Seeing people treat nature like it will never go away pains me
Thank you for bringing this up, it’s an extremely important topic - and it’s happening right here in California as you noted. A possible, although likely unpopular option, could be creating a permit and limit system like they do for hunting. There could be a rotating “season” with a set number of tourists allowed in a given area. The number of tourists could be set based on the carrying capacity of the local environment as well as the minimum number of people local businesses need to stay afloat...
I am very glad that I have stumbled upon your channel today. It gives me motivation to change what I do in order to make my life feel better. I just watched your video on "Using Flip Phones for 30 Days" and I am stunned at how much I spend on my phone, and I am now wanting to push away from that. And now this video, while it saddens me that people are more for the influence than the experience, is amazing to watch and see what the mass public do. I see that a lot, and it upsets me that people go so far as to endanger their own life for an okay photo.

This topic is super important! I travel and hike a lot and use Instagram to share my photos but have stopped specifically geotagging locations! i.e. I recently went to Colorado and did a ton of hiking there and posted a lot of pictures but left the geotag as just Colorado for most of them.
It's just those places that are easy to get to. There are less crowd in places that you have to hike for whole day. People always take the easy route.
If I go to these places, I take photos for myself, not instagram. I dont even own instagram

My biggest issue is everyone has their camera in a vertical position and they are shooting a landscape....No a fan of the video, I think people have every right to go where they want and if they want to take photos of themselves, then so be it. I think it's cool to be able to do it and maybe, just maybe, some of these people will make a nice print and frame it and hang it in the house. What a beautiful memory they would have created.
