To be fair, making Yusuke learn the spirit gun *during* an actual fight wouldn't be much better. He needed at least a tiny amount of practice before putting it to real use.
I know. It was the first thing I thought of. You should have told him to keep it to use later!
Important note: Yusuke's mom leveraged her yakuza connections to get Yusuke back in school. Also, those connections are probably where the "whistle for a hundred bad guys with guns" rumor about Yusuke came from.
...it makes so much sense....but if i recall her connections are her actually her ex husband who is a yakuza.
@@Dogmaguy74 Well not so much husband as Yusuke's no show dad. doesn't help Atsuko still goes back to him from time to time, but they're not actually in a relationship and Yusuke would probably rip him apart with his bare hands if he saw him.

@@Barret9559 At the end of the manga his dad shows up, talks to him, and takes his mom out on a date. This is after Raizen so Yusuke’s all mature and he’s not mad at his dad, even though both of his parents aren’t good at being parents. I thought it was pretty cool.

Most the main characters names are actually jokes in Japanese:
Yusuke Urameshi: The character used for "Yu" is the same one used in the title and means "ghost" and "urameshi" is a generic ghost cry in Japanese
Kazuma Kuwabara: Togashi's said he named Kuwabara after 2 basketball players but the phrase "kuwabara kuwabra" is sort of like the Japanese version of "knock on wood" which plays into Kuwabara's superstitious side
Kurama: Most likely a reference to Mount Kurama, the home of reiki, an alternative form of Japanese medicine, and is associated with tengu in Japanese folklore
Botan: Means peony and is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "button"
Hiei: Literally means "Flying shadow"
Botan are also a type of Japanese candy.

If I recall correctly Botan is also supposed to be a play on the English word "boatman" because she's a ferryman of the dead.

Yea I hate when fiction does this. It makes it less realistic and less logical.
Well the barrier between worlds is really weak in Japan, but it does happen elsewhere. However, the cases Yusuke had just happened to be local.

"Could they be enemies possibly?" - Actually invested in story.
"Until they fight there way to friendship!" - Expecting full Shonen shlock and being there for it.
In most Shonen series: main character achieves signature move through intense training, to overcome an obstacle, defeat an enemy, or for defense.
In Yu Yu Hakasho: main character achieves signature move instantly to get back at jerky teacher.
He need it to die first to unlock spiritual power. I think its fair in the intense training scale.
Well, in Dragonball Goku saw a move done once, then used it to break Bulma's car. Does that count?
So, in case you didn't recognise him. Koenma's dad is King Enma. Aka the Judge of the Dead. Yes, that King Enma, for those who've seen Dragonball Z.
And he's just as big in this show. Though Dragonball fans would know him as Yemma rather than Enma

Honestly seeing Hiei for the first time, I immediately thought he was badass👍
He has the classic dark edgy boy look that's a bit irresistible for some. I love he way he interacts with the rest of the team.
Hiei is the reason “the edgy one” is always my favorite in any anime to this day lol. The OG

Kurama and Hiei are named after sacred mountains of the same names (Mt. Kurama and Mt. Hiei). Also, the three relics here are versions of japan's three national treasures which are also a sword, orb and mirror.

Finally you get to meet the OG edgy anime swordsman boy Hiei lol. YYH probably has the best 4 man cast in all of anime.
I think Koenma getting Yusuke to use the spirit gun on the teacher makes sense really. Yusuke hadn't used to before, and it was so weak the first time that it was just enough to basically be a punch on a human. It wouldn't have had any practical impact against the demons in this episode anyway, but at least in the future Yusuke can continue to use it and develop it further.
Plus that teacher REALLY deserved it

There's a lot of "What if..?" in this ep.
What if there was no roberry and Yusuke had some time get some in-sight on the S.D. tools? - Guess it was a slow week for the Spirit World to spend resources.
What if Yusuke tracked the bad guys and waited until recharged? - Not in his nature, and may not expected to get on their tail so fast.
What if Yusuke hadn't interrupter Kurama and Gouki? - There would be 1 less bad guy at most, or 2 weaker.
Hiei : The most fearsome demon in anime history. He's the one responsible for the whole CHUUNIBYO phenomenon and create so many toxic edgy characters, such as Sasuke. And he nonchalantly did all those by just being awesome.
the dub is messing with my head! i can’t watch dubs normally and the english voices are SO DIFFERENT from the original japanese seiyuu. hearing a manly voice for Kurama instead of Ogata Megumi’s soft alto is a mindfuck lol
well Kurama's dub voice is pretty soft still but yeah I can see it being very different comapred to the original VA, who I'm assuming was a woman
@@sarafontanini7051 yep, and Hiei has this great deep voice in the original japanese. Kuwabara’s dub voice is pretty excellent though.
@@alexismonetti Kuwabara's dub voice is iconic. also wait until you see a certain old lady and how she's voiced by the first english actress for Frieza (I'm assuming, certainly sounds like the same person)
also Hiei's voice may be less deep, but it certainly fits his harsh, meanspirited personality
Fun fact, if you've noticed any similarities between this and Hunter x Hunter, that's because they were both made by the same person. And he is married to the woman who created Sailor Moon. Pretty cool, huh?

I can't wait for you to get pass the Spirit Detective arc, I just finished the Dark "Something" arc, and it's one of the best in shonen.

One thing I'm sad the anime doesn't cover more is stuff involving Yusuke's mom. In the manga she attends the Dark Tournament along with the others, is originally in the role Shizuru covers for her during Chapter Black in the anime, and we also see some interactions between her and Yusuke's dad.

Kurama and Hiei. These two are the gods of fandom and the fanfiction community in that era. You don't know how thousands or even millions of words sailed through this ship. 😂 And how many writers they have birthed worldwide when the Internet was just starting. I bow down to these bishounen gods.
With the thing especially taking children's souls, I think it might relate to something I've heard in other series that seems to be part of Japanese folklore, where children are thought to be like... closer to or more in tune with the spiritual world? It's been many years since I saw it but that was a plot point in an episode of an anime I watched that focused a lot on Japanese folklore.
Noragami, which they just finished watching, talks about that folklore.

I really wish you guys watch the 1999 version of Hunter Hunter anime too.... although 2011 version is good (especially episodes of Ant and onwards), the music and artistry of 1999 ver are just magnificent. Watching you two react to classic yuyuhakusho made me think about it :-)

Finally you meet Hiei and Kurama. Hiei is voiced by Chuck Huber, also known as Android 17. He's fantastic in this role. Perfect casting there just like the others.
Kurama definitely has an air of mystery to him. If Yusuke just waited a little longer I'm pretty sure Goki would've been obliterated. Past the thorns huh? Hmmm
I'm glad you mentioned how Yusuke is able to take down adults and damage weaker demons at this state. I wonder if he's just naturally strong or if there's something else going on.
Koenma is a great boss. He enables Yusuke's behavior but still reigns him in when the situation calls for it. I know the whole dad thing is getting played for laughs but I wouldn't write the king off completely. H sounds pretty extreme.
Next week we get a surprisingly emotional journey, but a welcome one at that.
