I started taking 12mg of Astaxanthin daily 10 years ago after some sunburns. Even my 9 year younger brother thinks my skin looks less aged than his and started taking it. The pink color helps me look tan even in cloudy Seattle.
Since Astaxanthin is a potent anti-oxidant, would it have effects of negative feedback on body's natural anti-oxidant production? Would it have a negative effect on exercise and muscles growth?
Antioxidants must be differenciated. Just because something has an antioxidant effect, it doesn't mean it will cause these effects. It's also not this black and white, but there are direct and indirect antioxidants for example. A lot of things are not primarily antioxidants, but still cause antioxidant effects in the body indirectly. I think astaxanthin is the latter, but shouldn't be taken excessively still. I stopped overdosing antioxidants, like I did a few years ago, but I'd welcome a video about this topic from Siim actually. Like which antioxidants are fine, which are which, which effect muscle growth, etc.
I tried astaxanthin many years ago. It made me look younger, and I felt good but it had one SERIOUS and UNWANTED side effect in my body- gave me such bad insomnia that I had to stop it after 1½ months. I couldn't figure out why I just could not sleep any more. When I stopped it, I started sleeping again soon after!!
The 12% increase in life expectancy in male mice by the Interventions Testing Program was based on an equivalent Human Dose of approximately 728mg per day, which is a very large dose.

Hello Siim, I've been taking it for about 3 months. My doctors know nothing about astaxanthin but I do think my skin is definitely reaping benefits. Glad to see your interest in it as well.😊
One important thing to note is that astaxanthin is also a DHT and aromatase inhibitor. Some people (men?) get horrible, chronic side effects from any DHT inhibitors (post-finasteride syndrome)
It's not nearly the potency of finasteride in inhibiting aromatization. From my understanding, a lot of the men dealing with those side effects have possible issues with things such as hypogonadism, shbg (sex hormone binding globulin) excess, high load of estrogen mimetics (e.g. bpa, bph, plastic, etc....) among other similar issues. It's anti-aromatiztion activity is certainly worth being aware of, but I think any man having issues should take a hard look at some of these other things..... also maybe estradiol to estriol conversion etc.
One of my favourite supplements, I have been taking it for over 15 years. I started off with 4mg and then went to 12mg. You feel the difference at 12 mg. It's a must have! Also, the brand I use is BioAstin. It's the best out there.

Hey Siim what do you think about L. reuteri? I'm thinking about trying it either as a tablet or homemade yogurt (which has a MUCH higher microbe content), but I've heard that it's maybe not appropriate for people under 45, esp women. I'm a man in my early 30s like you, so I'm not sure what to think. For that matter, I've also heard that for astaxanthin, it may be better to wait until you're in your 50s-60s bc it is too strong of an antioxidant... but I still want to try it 😂
Who says 12 mg is the optimal dose? I've read somewhere that astaxanthin accumulates in the body over time and taking 12 mg a day would be an overkill. Moreover, since 4 mg were effective in studies even after short periods of supplementation would suggest that this is already a pretty effective dose.
i'd love to hear about taking too many antioxidants. i don't know much about it but i heard one should rather support the body's own mechanism and synthesis of, for example, glutathione and not just blindy take the world's most potent antioxidants. also how about said substances after working out? too much antiinflammatory/antioxidative goodness may actually impair the body's reaction to the stimulus of exercise.
