Quick fix for mistakes i made in video: FPS capped to 72 not 30FPS. +EAX Sound Support dropped in SteamPipe (Thanks to TerminatedAccount for mentioning this)
Why can't valve release this game open source and cs 1.6. Old menu and fix 300fps with no cons like it is today with half life and CS 1.6. It fucks up the physics and stuff. The crosshair for example was always developed for 60fps. You can see this for yourself if you put fps 300 and how the crosshair and other stuff reacts completly diffrent than they should do. Really love your channel. Keep it top notch!
spera you can also notice how you bash corpses in the Steam Version of Half-Life. Unlike Half-Life WON Version (1.0.0.5 - 1.0.1.6), Steam Version's bash corpses like extremely fast. The WON Version's (1.0.0.5 - 1.0.1.6) bash corpses like normal.
Like using the D3D on a large resolution (especially on modern computers)? Personally I find the OpenGL kinda too blurry and softened edges to fully enjoy the game like in 98
They complain because its absolutely broken, try to join a crossfire server full of bhop tryhards that will blow you up the second you spawn and will travel the map at the speed of mfing light
sweats getting bunnyhopped on, and sweats bunnyhopping the shit out of people. It should've been made a console variable tbh, in singleplayer it's the best feature ever
Man, that installation makes me nostalgic. Brings back memories of me installing Quake 2 and having a blast there. I miss those installers now that everything's a digital download, there were some really creative ones back then
Lmao I bought this game at a software store back in late '98 at Metrocenter Mall. I still have the big box sitting on my desk till this day. I love installing the game on every PC I can find and do giant LAN parties.
I saw in another video that another retail feature broken in the Steam release is the randomly-tiling wall textures. In retail, certain surfaces would select texture tiles randomly from a set to options, in order to increase the level of visual interest in the environment. In the Steam release, these surfaces will have a single repeating tile.

I knew people who bought the pre GOTY version of Half-Life and downloaded TFC which was then free for Half-Life owners. But I and most other people I knew decided to shell out extra bucks just for the GOTY edition because it included TFC which we knew was already free since we still used dial up modems and it was so agonizingly slow. (I also chose the GOTY edition for the nicer looking box art.) I would have done the same for the retail Counter-Strike if I hadn't already installed the mod version.
Good video, but I do have a few nitpicks. For instance, you list 16:9 aspect ratio and 100+ fps as pros for the Steam version, but both of those are also attainable in the retail version as well. The aspect ratio requires a exe hack (see pcgamingwki for that) but the unlocked fps is a simple console command. (iirc, adding developer 0 is enough to unlimit framerates). I have no idea where the 30fps cap comes from but that definitely hasn't been an issue for me. Every retail version I've ever played was weirdly capped at 72fps. Easily overridden. Someone else mentioned the removal of EAX/A3D, so I won't mention that again. But also they removed Direct3D and that screwed over a lot of people who have issues with OpenGL and don't want to play with the pixellated software renderer. I'll leave it at that for now but just wanted to point out that a lot of your pros/cons for the two versions aren't really applicable if you're running the latest (1.1.1.0) patch for the retail version. With a reasonable amount of tweaking you should easily be able to get it running on modern hardware/resolutions/etc without missing out on all the stuff that was removed in the Steam version. Still a great comparison otherwise though; hope this doesn't come off as me shitting on your video.
Without hacking game it's not possible to enable 16:9, so i went as vanilla. For FPS, in 1.0.0.9 fps_max command isn't exist yet and developer "1" command won't help it at all. To be honest, Direct3D wasn't really a con for me.
I completely understand your reasons for doing so, just saying it's not impossible or even that difficult to enable those resolutions in the retail version. And I can accept that maybe the 72fps limit was introduced in 1.1.1.0, but I have an original up-patched disk version of HL on my work computer and it most definitely is not limited to 30fps, even without an available fps_max command. I'll see if I can give you some screenshots/configs in the next day or so.
My Half-Life version is Half-Life version 1.0.1.6 and it runs smoothly on Software Mode. I had trouble running it on OpenGL and Direct3D so I just use Software Mode.
Interestingly, OpenGL was disabled for the Steam version from 2004 until 2013's SteamPipe update. Then they basically swapped the two probably for Linux support.
Though I have the Retail, I didn't get the view bob and I can still use HD weapons and models, just some textures and other mods won't really work, such as Redemption. Using the "-dev" command on the .exe's target, I was able to "fix" some of the missing sounds for weapons, like the missing "grenade_pinpull" and "grenade_throw" sounds. P.S.: I'm already in love with this channel, please keep it up!
I'm pretty sure you're using 1.1.1.0 patch. (Latest patch for WON) Which is released around 2002, it has current bob. Version 1.0.0.9 (First Day Release) and 1.0.1.5 (First Patch) has old bob!
Correct! Though I was able to fix it by replacing some .dll files from Moddb, it also made the MP5 shoot faster than normal. By the way, is there any possible reason as to why my game can't run in fullscreen without weird glitches? Such as only being able to see the left upper corner of the screen and not being able to control the aim at all, though it keeps rotating clockwise. And yet again, all the mods work, aside from Counter-Strike 1.5 (if I'm not mistaken) which freezes and then crashes upon a map start. Again, thanks for your attention! And for the heart, too. :)
I was going to include MP5 too, but since FPS factor also changes shooting speed i wasn't sure at all. I need to check source code to be sure. But i think WON is more faster than latest version. For the glitch i have no clue sadly. Probaly your modern hardware isn't compatiable or Win7-10.
My Half-Life version is Half-Life version 1.0.1.6 and it's really cool. It has the old weapon bobbing and the view bobbing. It can also run the Half-Life mod Redemption from October 1999.
Vect0R 1.0.0.9 is NOT 1st day release, it is the first patch that for some reason removed the horrible shadows you see on screenshots. 1.0.0.5 is release.
Lol i like how lowpoly the spiral of egon gun is in steam version. I mean, it is lowpoly in the retail too, but it feels a lot smoother due to actual rotation.
Not bad, although I expected a bit more in-game differences. For instance I clearly remember that during my first WON version of hl campaign I've managed to kill Garg in the "On A Rail" chapter, by accidentally launching a grenade from the mp5 grenade-launcher and hitting garg slightly above the red eye. Turned out, it was their weak spot, so I also repeated that when I met Garg on the parking lot, lol... From what I've heard, steam doesn't have that feature and makes Gargs invincible till they die by script. Also, WON version of Half-Life, as well as addons featured neat loading screens, featuring main characters. Steam version simply has translucent loading screen. Yeah... Well... Good ol' times... *sheds a nostalgic tear*
Thanks! Very useful for developing my game "Supra Cow 2" (which is funnily enough is tied with HL1 lore). I LOVE the main menu from WON HL1 edition, so this video is really helpful to add it into the game. Thank you very much!
Really wish there was a way to restore the retail feel with a mod for the Steam version or something. I prefer how the Steam version has more contrast (Unless that's your computer settings or something.) and that it's fixed a lot of things. But at the same time, I love the old viewbobbing way more, and the menus.
Most of the aesthetic differences like the Tau Cannon beam, Gluon Gun, and the head bob are so minute yet the former two are something that do admittingly look better in the retail copy. However the different headbob and the camera roll would get a bit annoying for me and I would hope if they kept that they would have an option to turn it off or tweak it to a more subtle level. Great video, though a bit too long.
You forgot one of the biggest cons for the Steam version; That it's forever tied to a single Steam account and can never be sold or given away as you can with the retail version. "We're Valve, we killed the second-hand market!"
No, but Valve, through the use of Steam, was one of the first companies to tie games (even retail copies) to an online account. They paved the way and others followed. Would this have happened without Valve/Steam? Probably, but since they did it first, they get the blame for being pioneers in killing the second-hand market for games.
I never said that the Steam version of Half-Life was directly responsible for killing the second hand market. My original comment was that it was a large con that the Steam version of Half-Life is forever tied to a Steam account and therefore could never be sold or given away. I stand by that opinion. The fake quote about Valve killing off the second-hand market was a dig at Valve for doing this with all their games and also a snarky way of illustrating why having games tied to online accounts is bad.
See what I'm saying though is that it's so non-specific to Half-Life that I don't see why it's important in this context, especially since the reason given is not being able to resell it. Is anyone really buying Half-Life's original PC version in 2017 just because of the hope that they can just sell it off to someone else?
Elemen11T Xash3D is my favourite Half-Life GoldSrc compatible engine. It's like the Half-Life WON version. Plus, you can play Half-Life Xash3D on your Android phone.
I definitely prefer Xash3D for vanilla Half-Life, but I tend to have some nags when trying to use mods. Is there any way to restore the viewroll and weapon sway? I know most people probably don't like it, I just want as vanilla of an experience as possible.
I love the 1.1.1.0 version that is the Half-Life Platinum Edition's version (that i have in physical format). I Hope that in Steam will be able to use the old menu again :( and not the present menu of the Steam version :(
I doubt they will do such a thing. The game is nearly 20 years old and the only kinds of patches they do today are either small fixes and questionable patches like SteamPipe.
This is very interesting, I own both versions I Just bought the cd version today at a thrift store about 45 minutes from my house. And I also own the steam version as well. Well done
Older versions except for 1.0 (build 742) can use fps_single 0 as an uncap. You can break the games pacing going over 1000 FPS without vsync or a third-party cap.
I can tell the alarm sound, when installing Half Life (retail) was annoying, so on the Steam version, you just click next, and it does the installation process
I've played all version of Half-Life, the original retail, Steam and Source. I find that Steam and Source are a little bit broken when compared to the original.
@@isomericgamer6644 Valve(SATAN GAYBEN more specifically) don't care about their games, any longer. He's more worried about the loads of cash underneath his fatass and his snacks at the snacks bar.
Looking closely at the egon's muzzle, see how the beam from the retail version (7:34) is centered unlike the steam version (7:45) on which it was aligned a bit to the right? Steam version is a bit of disappointment for me imho.
Another big difference is that the original came in one of those classic old school big boxes with the fold out cover....... ah, the good old days.....
Yeah, I had that version. They had several other boxed versions like goty and the pack that game with all the other games. But the original version with the flap sells for 150-200 bucks on eBay now.
If you really want to get crazy, include Half-Life Day One, and the Counterstrike version of HLDM, both have some differences (At least the 2002 CS, not sure what the 2000 one contains, they seem to be the same beside the smaller cardboard box of the 2002)
God i miss the old half life... the menu... the sound effects... the old engine and the amount of ways to get out of the map or break the game in a fun way!
Though I like it, I can't say that much was broken by Steam HL. There was updates for WON(latest is HL 1.1.1.0), where things started to break and get better. Just read the difference between old HLSDKs and HLSDK 2.3 introduced for 1110.
I have the original on steam and a cd version . The cd retail have some many bugs in elevators that is gamebreaking ,but works wonders with old mods and mods like Afraid of the monsters. And works well on windows 7 .

Most of the stuff from the Game of the Year versions (e.g no energy cloud on gluon gun in multiplayer) of Half-Life were carried over to the Steam version.
I still remember the day my dad came home after work with this mysterious orange box and hearing that siren during installation. good days(always played it when dad wasn't home, he didn't like that i played violent games at an early age, i was 4 btw)
The Steam version at some point had the option to switch mods, like the retail does. For example, from CS 1.6 to Condition Zero, or vice versa. Source: experience with pirated CS 1.6 copies. Glad I got the Steam release.
The steam version still has that ability, you just have to open the exe directly from half life's files, you can also make a shortcut of the exe for the same effect
that old sierra installer... its the same for alien vs predator 2... another nostalgic game, not for the singleplayer campaing but for the multiplayer experience

*sigh I knew it from the start you ain't gonna show the significant EAX/A3D comparisons to the steam MilesSoundSystem one. How drastic the environmental audio differences are with the retail and steam version. EAX owns MSS so hard it's not even funny. Also you could have adjusted the brightness/gamma and sound levels of the retail version since they're just as configurable as the steam version. Now instead someone might get the idea that retail is inferrior and less customizable than the steam version, eventhough that most certainly ain't the case here. Other than these few gripes, thanks for making the video and you did show some very valid things also such as that strafecap. Although you could have shown the HD models specifically but gun-wise that is also kinda more of subjective on which is better. I personally prefer the original MP5 over the Steam M4 Assault Rifle and so forth.
I actually found the Half-Life Xash3D uses the Half-Life WON main menu style. I find it very cool. (I know it's not an official Half-Life game but I'm just telling.)
6:40 this camera movement was removed in later versions (captain obvious here), but i think that some people will know that this was removed in the steam version, but i have the original retail and it does not have it, and with this, the console comand "r_shadows" was removed too 7:40 the energy cloud too
Since The Steam Version With SteamPipe (Since 2013) Was Quite Laggy For My Laptop, The Old Steam Version And WON Version Worked Fine On My Laptop. (Even if You Have Intel HD Graphics, AMD Radeon And NVIDIA GeForce)
hello a question that version of won that you have as it is? I'm not sure about Steam version being unable to load some mods. I actually was suffering opposite issues - the mods would either not work or have broken graphics on CD version. Or maybe my version was outdated, the disk is lost anyway.
Buying digital is all well and good, but you can't get the voice actors to sign your Steam Account. Take Unreal Tournament 2004, the only way to get Unreal Tournament 2004 was by sending Epic Games the manual from Unreal Tournament 2003, Steam wasn't as popular then as it is now. Boxed copies of Unreal Tournament 2003, still in their selephane wrappers go for a good penny on eBay.
I downloaded the sound files from that i'm assuming came from the retail version and found a file that apparently is supposed to play when you long-jump, however i don't have the retail version and only have the steam version, in which that file doesn't play. Does anyone know if that sound is used in the retail version?
@@1uueeatc There's a lot of things to consider like wide-screen resolution, fps caps, soundtrack, some bug fixes, some nerfs being removed like the mp5 fire rate and pattern, etc. Although retail is the vanilla and best. The steam version provides support for modern hardware and i think that is more important. The retail version needs more workarounds right now to get it working on a modern hardware.
while everyone here nostalgic bout the won version here i am playing half life steam version and loving the steam menu screen since my childhood edit: so i dont have the half life steam version anymore bcuz i lost my steam password so what half life should i buy half life 1998? or source
Ah the classic menu's and that gold gameplay... They don't do games like these anymore. Not to mention, Valve seems to be stuck with that "plain white text and image" type menu with their Source games. I hope they use a menu like the original Half-Life, instead of the plain one.
"Install Half-Life" is not appearing as an option when I run autorun? I am using Windows 7 x64 and I believe I have a fairly early copy of Half-Life from 1998. I insert the disc and locate the DVD drive files and click it but only the bottom 3 options show up. How do I get around this? Edit: Okay, I tried again recently (6 months later) and, miraculously, the Install option showed up and I got it to work pretty easily. Unfortunately, I now can’t play the Hazard Course because it takes a while saying that it’s reading the CD (I think it was something along those lines) and eventually says it failed to validate CD. What to do?
Quick fix for mistakes i made in video:
FPS capped to 72 not 30FPS.
+EAX Sound Support dropped in SteamPipe (Thanks to TerminatedAccount for mentioning this)

As much as you aren't technically wrong, the issue plaguing all digital games can not be solely attributed to the Steam version of one game.
No, but Valve, through the use of Steam, was one of the first companies to tie games (even retail copies) to an online account. They paved the way and others followed. Would this have happened without Valve/Steam? Probably, but since they did it first, they get the blame for being pioneers in killing the second-hand market for games.
Okay, but that's still not specifically Half-Life's doing.
You're making really good videos, please, keep it up
Whats up

Sounds like someone likes MarphyBlack's Half Life Fact Files.
Great video though.
I'm one of those weirdos that still play Retail (CD) HL in 2023.
I also, for some reason, remember that shotgun was blue, the same as colt. And yeah, old menu was amazing unlike new menu, which looks boring.
WON version best version ,just with xash3d patch runs nice for me
Elemen11T Xash3D is my favourite Half-Life GoldSrc compatible engine. It's like the Half-Life WON version. Plus, you can play Half-Life Xash3D on your Android phone.
What does exactly "WON" means? I know it's non steam, but what it means?
World Opponent Network. Its been dead for years now
not the custom made WON2 :D Still has a lot of cs1.5 servers running
Well done
Oh god i remember that alarm sound
I was not thinking that would play
The retail version's models look so much better. Maybe it's the lower resolution that gives them less compression artifacts.
I'm surprised how deferent between the retail and the steam versions are, in the matter of fact i kind of like the retail version better!
Older versions except for 1.0 (build 742) can use fps_single 0 as an uncap. You can break the games pacing going over 1000 FPS without vsync or a third-party cap.
1:1 iso images of HL won version can be found in archive.org :)
@Exam Name yes 😁
iso won't work soundtrack, arquives bin/cue work soundtrack :)
@@BradPitBrasileiro that's true. My bad calling disc images as iso ahhahaha
I can tell the alarm sound, when installing Half Life (retail) was annoying, so on the Steam version, you just click next, and it does the installation process
I've played all version of Half-Life, the original retail, Steam and Source. I find that Steam and Source are a little bit broken when compared to the original.
Source is broken a lot in comparison to the original.
@Kapitan Grigoriy the steampipe update broke half life source, the original 2004 version doesn't have most of the bugs
Half life source kicked ass when it was released. The steam pipe update screwed the game entirely.
@@isomericgamer6644 Valve(SATAN GAYBEN more specifically) don't care about their games, any longer.

@@AlfaPro1337 I agree on everything you said. But i think half life alyx is great.
Looking closely at the egon's muzzle, see how the beam from the retail version (7:34) is centered unlike the steam version (7:45) on which it was aligned a bit to the right?
Steam version is a bit of disappointment for me imho.
Ive played both versions and i much rather play retail over steam just because of stability and the sheer mod support it has
there is an strange bug in steam version of HL2 that when you jump running in certain moment, you will do something like that 9:44
orange box engine
I don't know how much I could thanks you for restore-life.
I love your videos!
Notice that Egon's ammo is fast to empty in retail compared to Steam.
Video start at 6:10
7:35 This is because of the OpenGL engine, if you put in software mode, works fine.
I have the original on steam and a cd version .
The cd retail have some many bugs in elevators that is gamebreaking ,but works wonders with old mods and mods like Afraid of the monsters.
And works well on windows 7 .
Yea the elevator bug is annoying 😂

@@wolfgangamadeus232 i had to buy the steam version due to the elevator bug. Especially in blue shift 😂. But i guess steam version is better than retail due to its continuous support.
Who knows maybe half life restored (mod) will fix all of our problems 😂
tsis something very rare to happen so don't need to worry ,I have the steam version for at least 3 years ,and just only happend one time . But I can see you just like me still have PTSD with these damn elevators XD
Dats some speedy interwebz right there!
that old Half-Life menu used to creep me out
Counter-Strike Beta 7 changed all that ahahahaha
Happy 25th anniversary Half-life: 1998-2023
the hold menu looks awesome
The Steam version at some point had the option to switch mods, like the retail does. For example, from CS 1.6 to Condition Zero, or vice versa. Source: experience with pirated CS 1.6 copies. Glad I got the Steam release.
The steam version still has that ability, you just have to open the exe directly from half life's files, you can also make a shortcut of the exe for the same effect
that old sierra installer...
its the same for alien vs predator 2... another nostalgic game, not for the singleplayer campaing but for the multiplayer experience
Wish new menu was as cool and unnerving as old menu.
The original menu is gold.
the true reason why gordon doesn't speak
when you play the game you are gordon
you are gordon freeman
you are the one free man
gordon freeman is just a character
Old menu is iconic but steam menu is more accessible
7:38 this is still in the steam version. However it requires setting cl_lc and cl_lw to 0
cl_lw is weapon prediction command and disabling it is not a fix. Valve confirmed this egon bug and we are expecting an update for this behaviour.
Vect0R works for me. It’s still a bug however, but rn it’s a fix for it. It will be fixed eventually without toggling.
Odd, I remember the Egon having a green and very faint energy ray and the jump module not having any sound in the Retail version.

Loved this video. What did you use for editing?
*sigh
I knew it from the start you ain't gonna show the significant EAX/A3D comparisons to the steam MilesSoundSystem one.
6:40 this camera movement was removed in later versions (captain obvious here), but i think that some people will know that this was removed in the steam version, but i have the original retail and it does not have it, and with this, the console comand "r_shadows" was removed too
7:40 the energy cloud too
Who tf thought changing the menu that much was a good idea?
Hand grenades behave drastically different. I'm surprised you haven't mentioned it.
man i remember the retail ver...
Bhopping, object boosting classic bobbing and classic viewroll should be togglable and _special should be brought back.
Because the one I have does not have those options to raise the resolution only up to 1024 * 728 I think but in the video I could see that it has more resolution haat the option to put it in window mode ... you can share it please 🙏🙏🙏🙏
salu2 de peru
upsetting to see that valve had made the steam and cd versions of half life entirely different
Nice video!
I miss those old install wizards
I downloaded the sound files from that i'm assuming came from the retail version and found a file that apparently is supposed to play when you long-jump, however i don't have the retail version and only have the steam version, in which that file doesn't play. Does anyone know if that sound is used in the retail version?
None. It never did. But PS2 apparently did.
9mmAR in Retail was shooting faster than in Steam one
What version should I play the Retail or Steam releases?
Steam for latest and greatest. (No bugs)
Retail for nostalgia
@@govardhang3024 actually, you can download patch for the retail and play it without bugs
The retail version needs more workarounds right now to get it working on a modern hardware.
play both
while everyone here nostalgic bout the won version here i am playing half life steam version and loving the steam menu screen since my childhood
edit: so i dont have the half life steam version anymore bcuz i lost my steam password so what half life should i buy half life 1998? or source
Ah the classic menu's and that gold gameplay... They don't do games like these anymore.
Not to mention, Valve seems to be stuck with that "plain white text and image" type menu with their Source games. I hope they use a menu like the original Half-Life, instead of the plain one.
Good old days

This wasn't meant to happen. Gonna fix this.
I miss the old day...
What to do?
The Won menu looks really better than the steam one.
