    The Duke of Brunswick (Charles William) also basically sponsored (financially supported) a young Carl Frederich Gauss, who is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. I think Gauss even dedicated his book on number theory, called Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, to the Duke of Brunswick.

    I have ALWAYS wondered what happened to the many, many prisoners captured by various sides during the Napoleonic Wars, I HOPE you do an ENTIRE video on that subject!!!

    Excellent, served in the 80's in the "panzerhusaren" 1st btn panzeraufklärer and was deligted to have then at the barracks gate the battle honours of "Peninsula-Sicily-Waterloo-Mars la Tour"... played the pipes then, as unofficial Waterloo Piper, chuckle... Always been proud of being member of such a fine corps! Husaren, hurra!

    Nice....never heard about that 2nd engagement on their march to the sea. I didn't know they had artillery. Their story is indeed an adventurous one ! Looking forward to part 2

      Personally I'd really like to see some more videos on the foreign Legions in the French army, for example the French Bavarian or the Irish Legion, which I just recently learnt existed. (I beg your pardon if you've made such videos and I just haven't noticed then yet)

    • @NapoleonicWargaming
      @NapoleonicWargaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not yet, but I'm half way through painting a Bavarian army, so I'll deffo be doing them! And I'm actually painting some Irish too 😂 can you see my painting table?!

    Very noice! Looking forward to the next episode.
    I always had a heart for the black Brunswickers since I first learned of them in 1994 from Microprose' s Fields Of Glory and from literature and other games in the later course of my napoleonic studies and leisure pursuit.

    • @NapoleonicWargaming
      @NapoleonicWargaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah they're very cool. They were very popular in the Victorian era, their story of a lost nation, and being German like Albert, were seen as very romantic

    • @FrederickTheGrt
      @FrederickTheGrt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Truly noice.

  • @knutclau705
    @knutclau705 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now as for the Westphalian prisoners at Halberstadt, the most likely outcome would have been that they were released on parole, being mostly brunswick or hessian (cleve-berg, lippe or bückeburg subjects and thus men of related rulers to the black duke himself, many of them later slipping away to serve in the KGL in Spain), but that's just a guess...

    Firstly, awesome video! Super informative and interesting!
    Am not too familiar with wargamimg (excluding basic games workshop as a young un') -but is awesome to see how in depth you (can) get with the historic side of things! (And talk of historically appropriate conversions!)
    Definitely love your work though cant help but pointing out one or two fairly minor details:
    Around 5:12 I think you mean 'Charles William' instead of 'Frederick William' with regards to the european tour of 1764
    - also at 5:48 and again at 8:10 you mention 'Charles Frederick', instead of (I think) 'Charles William'... (unless the statements were true of both charles w. And frederick w. (Prussian field marshal & 'wasn't super thrilled with the brunswick manifesto') :p )
    Don't take it the wrong way though- tis definitely a great video!
    And seriously, considering historical naming conventions- (let alone German ones :p ) I definitely don't blame you for slipping up here or there! (Tbh- I struggle with my own (German) ancestors names)
    Again though- tis an awesome vid with a wealth of information and clearly well researched- big cheers! :)

    Love hearing and reading about the minor German states and rhine confederation forces of this time, the Brunwick army's march to the sea is the same kind of thing that happened to xenophon and his march of the ten thousand out of persia, thanks again for this video 👍

    Good story telling, but I hope you will be able to show the correct uniforms for the period up to 1809. Steve Barber Models have the right figures in 28mm, while Emperor Toad's Emporium have many of the earlier armies that Charles William led. Of course, Perry's new 1806 range would be worth mentioning too.
