      The most annoying thing for me as a kid was I was always behind the trend with things like Beyblade and Yu-Gi-Oh! I'd get into them right around the time people stopped caring. So I decided to start on Duel Masters early.
      And... no-one else ever played it.
      Still no regrets though. The anime is a personal favourite and even with the parody, I actually think it's few serious elements were handled surprisingly well.

      @@GameHogGames I got in late for Duel Masters,
      But as someone who has studied Game Balancing,
      Duel Masters has a few mechanics
      That are so different from MTG,
      That I'd argue Duel Masters is the better one.
      The similarities are likely intentional tho,
      As MTG and Duel Masters are from the same company.
      Duel Masters having more flexibility
      For both players and game designers.
      Tho in the 3 last international releases (DM10, 11 and 12)
      The game really suffered because of a few unfair cards that should've stayed in the anime,
      A banlist was necessary, but likely wouldn't've saved it.

    • @GameHogGames
      @GameHogGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BramLastname Your knowledge on this is very interesting!! Its fascinating to hear it mechanically compared to MTG, even though most people just consider them copies of each other. I've been playing the mobile game Duel Masters Plays and have notice that later cards definitely seem more broken and sway the balance of a match somewhat. I prefer the first 2 releases, myself!!

    Duel Masters failed here, for the simple reason....they didn't get to Cross Gears, and I mean that. When Cross Gears where introduced it is what started the game on slight increase from the depth it hit with the early stuff. Cross Gears started and began to change the game form a Magic the Gathering clone to something special, it took the idea and pushed to where Magic didn't go and is still doing so(where currently in series where we have Creature cards that also work as magic cards at the same time). Seriously if you think the TCG was fun the OCG got freaking insane, and I love it. I wish it would've come back with the recent reboot last year, because it really would've been cool.

      Ive hard some rumors that in the US Duel masters actually affected the sales of MTG and its a conspiracy for why it ended production. If you think about it it does make sense since they can take full profit on MTG but duel masters was made in japan so they cant go nuts on it and take all the money too. Internet conspiracies are entertaining

    Duel Masters was very popular where lived, in that part of the city the local cable tv only had Cartoon Network, so we didn't really heard about and watched Yugioh and Pokemon. There was Duel Masters everywhere at school, playground etc. It was still popular without new cards, Bakugan was which end it's run, it was just as or more popular than Duel Masters, but it went donwhill with the second series and after two years it disappeared. So it so strange to heard it was unpopular in other countries.

  • @CaptainMarvel4Ever
    @CaptainMarvel4Ever 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Everyone else was wrong. Realistically, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon are all fundamentally bad games that use other card effects to fix the poor ruling and design elements. Duel Masters has excellent tempo fast enough to get things moving while still having a good back and forth. The ability to turn any card into a resource fixes the massive bricking problem the big 3 all have. Shields giving you cards when your opponent has the advantage is an excellent comeback mechanic. There's a reason this is the top game in Japan. Shame the western reboot was so bad.
    Though hey, if Battle Spirits and WiXoss can make it over here, maybe Duel Masters can come back.

      @@GameHogGames Yeah! I must admit the Digimon TCG is a lot of fun from what little of it I've gotten to play, so I'm really hoping this version can has a healthier life ahead of it. (I own a starter-deck.)
      That said Digimon is DEFINITELY dedicated to this being some kind of time loop.
      Its taking a great concept Bandai already had (Tamagotchi back then, Chrono-Clash now) and refining it into something really cool with its own identity... and awkwardly setting itself up for comparison with Pokémon on an oddly specific superficial basis (the 'mon' suffix back then, debuting with the colours Red, Blue, and Yellow now) when the two take similar concepts in fundamentally opposite directions in a lot of their core elements.
      (For example, the backbench is one Digimon, and all but one Pokémon. Pokémon has automated Mulligans and Digimon has none.)

    I think I might have been the biggest fan in Sweden for Duelmasters becuse except for me and two friends I only meet 3 peple who even remotely was intrested to play it insted of Yugioh or Magic. I watched the anime and thought it was fun and a good parody, now the english one dile that up a notch but the original is pretty self aware and cracy but it does have some heavy moments. And fun thing if you look at Duelmasters which I can appreciate in hindsight, Shobu loses a lot in the anime, not only boss characters. I mean like he loses a lot of his duels and is shown to be alright. I hate when the main character get super depressed when they lose. Anyway I am recently got intrested and back into Duelmasters thanks to this mobile game which is only available in Japan, Duelmasters Plays. Sounds wierd but imagine to challenge you over skype with video camera I really just want to play this game with someone like after 12 years.

    you know that Duel Masters was actually (in the first few volumes) a manga about Magic the Gatherin... after that i evolved into duel masters... so it wasn't a "card game based on a manga"
    also the Anime in Japan has the same premise stoywise but the syncro for the west did input the 4th wall breaks and ingame jokes. Regarding Kaijudo: well the game was only available in US, it came during at time where many players already had their game and the series was actually nothing about the card game so i think this could be a reason for it. Also why not simply go on a duelmasters wiki. print the cards you want and play for fun???

    Japanese Magic is more appealing than Western magic.
    I get nostalgic for the cards and wanna buy some but I know I'll do nothing with them. A shame the portable games don't even compare to the Yu-Gi-Oh games on GBA.

  • @Duskstone89
    @Duskstone89 ปีที่แล้ว

    So Duel Masters was very much a good game. It plays like Magic the Gathering, but is a lot more streamlined, with an aesthetics change to resemble Yu-Gi-Oh more than Magic. This appeals a lot to the Japanese audience, who weren't as hot on Magic's Tolkien-esque high fantasy, hence why it could gain a foothold there.
    Over here, though, Duel Masters was kind of fighting a battle on two fronts, competing with Magic for its mechanics and with Yu-Gi-Oh for its demographic - both of which it lost because, well, Magic already had a decade of cards and rules and an established playerbase who didn't want this "Kid's Version" of Magic, while Yu-Gi-Oh already had the kids in its grasp.
    Then Kaijudo came along and lost to its own marketing. The cartoon was bad, and had nothing to do with the card game, so it didn't even really work as advertisement. It also decided to just, not try to cash in on the nostalgia value that the Duel Masters brand has? Which _could_ maybe have to do with copyright or licensing, but I doubt it. If they had just brought back Duel Masters and/or made it compatible with the old game, I think it would've been received much much better.
    In the end, the English release of Duel Masters is a great game. Again, it's effectively Magic: The Gathering, but with updated mechanics that require less math, less dice and tokens and junk to keep track of; The whole game tracks itself in a sort of Perfect Enlightened TCG State. It's great and deserved better, but in a sense, it's also nice to have these 900-something cards that were released exist in their own bubble, at no risk to fall victim to power or complexity creep. Just remember to ban Bombazar, Dragon of Destiny if you ever try to play the game for real lol

      It's not accidental at all - it's very very deliberate. I mention that in the video. I said how the Japanese one is different but does have some elements of comedy in it.
      The US one makes deliberate visual changes to make ridiculous gags, so it's very much an intentional thing and isn't accidental.

    your video lacked proper research. the card game wasnt released as a response to the manga and animes success, it was an attempt by wizards of the coast to create a card game for the east as magic the gathering wasnt as popular there. its failure came about because it shared development with magic the gathering due to both being wizards properties. because magic was the bigger franchise globally, it was able to leech ideas off of duel masters. some notable ideas leeched in this way lead to some of magics most noteworthy releases including the much beloved innistrad.

    Nah it’s all about effort and advertise. Why people love pokemon card game because of the anime why they love yugioh card game because of the anime people love Duel masters but the anime is the worst story. It is like the harry potter book is so good but when they make a movie people were drunk while making the script and animation
