Vladimir Shklyarov was a supreme dancer widely admired for a rare blend of technical brilliance, humility, wit and warmth that mirrored the grace he brought to the stage. May he rest in everlasting peace. I love this video - the expression of jealousy from both is hilarious! But of course, the whole sequence is absolutely fabulous.
Thé Mariinsky and the Bolshoi are two of the best ballet companies in the world, far, far better than any American ballet company today! Viktoria Tereshkina and Vladimir Shklyarov are two of the brightest stars of the Mariinsky and are among the best dancers in the world!
I would go along with the comment re Bolshoi and Mariinsky companies. The Danes are great too. There have been other lovely dancers elsewhere but Russian training for me is supreme. Everyone has their favourites. The above is mine. Tragic the death of this lovely man who I confess I didn’t know. Graceful and fluid. 🙏❤️🇬🇧

strangely some americans are obsessed with bad mouthing Russian ballerinas. Of course this Tereshkina dances like post-pregnancy Tereshkina but she's still powerful and her entire body resonates with the music as it should be. On the other hand, the abt ballerina mentioned in here has the body of stiff door. if they don't like Russians, why they don't stay in their fabulous abt instead of coming here?
Bnesque Those who are not fond of non-Russian ballerinas are equally free to post their negative opinions of those dancers. And they've done so, saying things far more savage than anything I've ever written. Russian dancers are NOT the best in the world. They are NOT the be all and end of all of classical ballet. It is the presumption that they are, that I find so irritating and increasingly tiresome.
That manege, hitting the floor with the fan-thing is lame. The Russian Kitris should watch Cynthia Harvey in this opening variation in ABT's production of Don Q. No, I'm not kidding.
No. I won’t spare you all. Have you seen how Cynthia Harvey dances that final manege? Waltz turn, waltz turn, chainé, chainé, chainé, battement developée a la seconde. Repeat. Repeat once more. Her sparkling, witty account of that manege is just one of many references I’m using. I have countless more references of that dumbed down, totally lame, hitting-the-floor-fan-thing that these Russians stump through, just like in this video. Such a reductive combination for dancers who fancy themselves as being best in the world. No, let them spare US. For all the many objections I had to Mikhail Baryshnikov’s watered down version of his Don Q for ABT, that manege in Kitri’s first variation is a bravura standout. Cynthia Harvey, Gelsey Kirkland, Yoko Ichino, Susan Jaffe and Paloma Herrera and I believe, even the greatest non-turner of a ballerina of them all, Natalia Makarova, who I didn’t see, ended this variation in just this effervescent way; as did Cynthia Gregory and Martine Van Hamel.
You have obviously learnt ballet and are knowledgeable re steps etc., - i feel compelled to reply to your recent comment on behalf of the majority of people who love & enjoy ballet, but have (possibly unfortunately) never had lessons - I go to the ballet, and watch on You Tube, not to compare dancers, but to enjoy the different interpretations the dancers give to the roles they dance. I like this one by Viktoria, as I enjoyed the one by Cynthia Harvey (I have the video of her & Baryshnikov, but I have seen her dance Swan Lake live) - as I have also enjoyed various other ballerinas in this scene (I might add that Gelsey Kirkland also hits the floor with her fan in her rendition in 1978) - there are wonderful ballerinas from USA, Russia, Britain, Australia, Romania, Ukraine etc., etc., - why try to compare them???

Here a '960 version of "hitting the floor" with Maya Plisetskaja. Not a Baryšnikov "invention"
