Being born mid 90's, I've never even _heard_ of this cute little cave man Tommy Pickles lookalike or the TurboGrafx-16, but ever since the launch of the Wii's Virtual Console, I've fallen in love with this game ever since! I'm totally nostalgic for this game, so I'm a bit more forgiving of all of its flaws that you've mentioned, but please do the sequel Bonk's Revenge some day, it is AMAZING! It's a true platforming gem that one, though still not perfect, it greatly improves upon a lot of things and problems this game had. I love Bonk!
Bonk's Revenge will be part of my next PCE import in a month or so, rest assured :D I think someone else mentioned the Tommy Pickles reference and it's spot on haha. Same goes for Chuck Jr. a couple years later.
I really enjoy how your videos are reviews and walkthroughs at the same time. It's like a compressed lets play without the boring parts, instead packed with hints and background informations.
As someone who still owns their Turbo Express from the early 90s (& a Turbo Duo), I can safely say Bonk's Revenge is the high water mark of the series. Bonk was good, but they honed the formula on the sequel.
Really enjoyed this, cheers for taking the time to provide such a thorough analysis and thoughtful critique! While it's hard not to agree that turbo makes a cakewalk of many would-be challenges, it's perhaps worth noting the original design of the PC-Engine gamepad doesn't feature turbo sliders like its TurboGrafx counterpart :)
Nice to see you've started reviewing PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 games. By the way, have you thought about importing a PC-engine CD? Most of the games for the PC-Engine like Castlevania were released for the CD addon, and if you want to play Super CD-ROM games, you're also going to have to get a Super System Card.
Actually, I always wondered if the second boss, Gladdis, was originally supposed to be female or was it as mistake in translation. The character does wear what looks like women's glasses but also has a mustache.
I enjoy your reviews even when I disagree. Bonks Adventure is one of my all time favorite games, probably my favorite platformer. I only ever got to play it at Radio Shack as a kid cause the TG16 was so expensive in Canada. I actually own a TG16 now primarily for the Bonks games. The level with the trees you have to climb with your teeth then shift to the other side which you said was lacking detail was my favorite. Although I think the version you have here has different graphics than the western release I have. Also loved the cloud level and the inside of the dinosaur, and the tower. And I loved the bone bridge that lets you skip a level if you are good with the spin and timing.
From what I remember, there was an N.E.S port of this game but I think it's mostly the same minus of course the graphical presentation as impressive and the sound/music. Overall, neat review as usual Kris. :)
I've only ever played Adventure and Revenge on the PCE/TG16. I believe the NES/GB ports are pricey. There is actually a copy of Super Bonk for the SNES at the local shop but I can't justify spending the $70 asking price... I wonder of the Famicom and Super Famicom games are cheap?
I wouldn't know but you should look that up sometime if you got the time. If it's cheap then I say why not? If they're not, I just recommend emulating even if it's a non perfect system.
If you don't like Bonk's Adventure, then YOU'RE THE PROBLEM!!!!!!! THE DESIGNERS INTENDED 4 THE LEVEL DESIGN 2 B OCCASIONALLY THOUGHTLESS! Nah, JK. Great review, Implant. This game still kind of interests me, even with the flaws you pointed out. I did hear Bonk 2 is miles better, though. :)
I guess that's a problem with some platformers I noticed. Some are just not properly designed with the said mechanics and/or don't compliment the level design. I mean hell, for all the platformers we got in the 4th gen few imo could really master this.
I think I snatched it for $15 from hit-japan on eBay. Hard to beat a price like that :) And yeah, Konami and NEC or whoever owns the rights to the TG-16/PCE needs to release a Classic Edition style system.
4:26 - Befriend Bonk = END OF THE WORLD OMG!!!! See, befriend your enemies and look what happens... world peace will kill us all!!! I'm sorry, I need to go to bed... LOL

Thanks man, glad to hear it!

The Turbographx16 is my second favorite game console and Bonks Adventure is a great platformer.
Bonks is good but Revenge is so much better.
I'll get there someday haha :)
@@implantgames Hopefully Super Bonk too!
"Marking the end of the world", sounded more dramatic than it turned out to be!
Haha, indeed ;)

Still waiting for the Bonk’s Revenge and Bonk 3 reviews...JK great review as always
Don't forget about Bonk on the Nes.

I'm not sure if I will ever own the CD add-on, just depends on what shows up locally. We shall see :)
When this came out in Japan the PC engine controllers didn't have turbo
I like these videos, thanks bud! Nice job.
The TG-16 is a wonderful console. I prefer Bonk's Revenge due to slight graphical and gameplay improvements. :)
The level design is much better also.

I had bonk.on tg16, and bonks revenge. I didn't like bonk 3. Turbografx was a good but obscure system. Cool that people are redescovering it
I enjoy your reviews even when I disagree.

nice review kris. I like bonk 2 and 3 more than 1 but 1 is enjoyable in most respects.
Thanks man :) Can't wait to try the rest!
If this was the original pack instead of that bullshit Keith Courage, TG-16 might've been a bit, just a bit more successful in the US
Bonk would have been a much better choice haha :)

Yes, and an arcade game called BC KID which is really hard and doesn't have the spin
This was a great game for 1989 and the sequel was even better.
Haha, hopefully Bonk doesn't have the rabid fan base Mega Man and Sonic have... ;)
I guess that's a problem with some platformers I noticed. Some are just not properly designed with the said mechanics and/or don't compliment the level design. I mean hell, for all the platformers we got in the 4th gen few imo could really master this.
Many definitely have a "spaghetti at the wall" feeling to them. Zool 1 & 2, the Bubsy series, Awesome Possum...
Fuck yeah it's still good. It's just one of the coolest platformers I've ever played.
Oops, i think I played Super Bonk.
You forgot to mention that Bonk almost got a revival game for Wii Ware and Xbox 360
Ack, will have to remember for the next game. Thanks!
maybe in a future can you do is rayman still good?
Someday.
Is there a reason you played the PC Engine version?
+Ryan Olive It's half the price :D
implantgames Good reason. We need a pc engine classic with 30 built in games.
I think I snatched it for $15 from hit-japan on eBay. Hard to beat a price like that :) And yeah, Konami and NEC or whoever owns the rights to the TG-16/PCE needs to release a Classic Edition style system.
Well now they are releasing one! The turbografx Bonk games are simply better than the SNES one anyway
Inspector Bonk
4:26 - Befriend Bonk = END OF THE WORLD OMG!!!! See, befriend your enemies and look what happens... world peace will kill us all!!!
I'm sorry, I need to go to bed... LOL
Anyone here played the NES version?
Not I.
*shakes head*
I agree... I tried to give Bonk a shot, but the gameplay is bland despite the unique look and style.
I'm glad I played through it a few times and finally crossed it off the backlog. But yeah, meh.
Bonk's Revenge is better in nearly every way, most notably in the level design.
It never was good
My first Bonk game was on the Gameboy two years ago. I’ve played the first two Bonks on the Wii U virtual console. Enjoyed them all since!
