The trouble with polyester clothing is that it gets really smelly really fast. Really smelly. I've had better luck with poly/cotton blend -still drys faster than all cotton without stinking. Merino wool doesn't smell and is actually suitable for all climates. Silk is fantastic for tshirts and underwear and long underwear. Quick dry, comfortable and light and small for packing. Good first layer for warmth without weight. Yes, silk and merino are expensive, but you're packing light and only need a few pieces and companies like Patagonia charge a lot for their polyester anyway. The beauty of natural materials is that they are also biodegradable. Polyester is plastic and plastic is forever - not environmentally friendly. Great video. Good quality and helpful.
You are spot on. Merino is excellent. I hike and travel with merino - it dries quickly and is lightweight and does not irritate the skin. I recently bought a pair of merino underwear - as good as my Exofficio, but more natural:)
Silk is disgusting. Made by dead caterpillars :-( But you are right on polyester getting really smelly. Which is the reason why I always make sure that my shirts are 100% cotton. Yes, they take two or three days to dry if you handwash them. So I take enough of them to last me for two weeks and everything's fine.
As an older woman who travels carry on only - going UK to USA to do super geeky history stuff - my top 3 tips are - 1. Silk, silk shirts and PJs pack very small, wick brilliantly and when washed out, dry very fast (you do need the right kind of silk if you care about how creased they are after drip drying) anyplace with high humidity will help creases drop out. 2. Don’t bring underwear home, I pack my old knickers and socks and then when they are no longer needed, throw them away - more space for souvenirs. 3. Pack a stow away hold all or back pack, you can be more relaxed about your packing when on the road and, when it’s time to fly home, if you do have too much stuff, you can send one bag back in the hold - you’re going home, it doesn’t matter if the back of dirty clothes is late, you have clothes at home. Oh that second pair of shoes - I take good walking, water safe, sandals - good for hot days and open water swimming - and from what I remember of hostels (back in the dark ages) shower shoes are sometimes a good option to. PS - Bug repellent wipes - don’t count as a liquid at the airport and easy to carry and use during the day.
I reccomend keeping all your clothes in a dry bag/sack. They can be a lifesaver. It's nice to see you both in Louis and Ben's vlogs, enjoying your time in the UK. You lovely guys did a great job at helping Louis find his bag.
polyester is the worst fabric to wear in a hot country! I agree it's light weight and easy to pack but it's a CLASSIC NONO. Synthetic fibres tend to be water-repellent; they allow sweat to build up, reducing evaporation, and causing discomfort and irritation. I've travelled a lot and cotton, linen and rayon is the best material as they're natural and breathable. Not the best tip 'material wise'.
I think the best advice on this video is to dress in layers. I lived and traveled many years throughout Alaska and found that best because you can adjust to going in and out of door, adjust to the changes in temperature during the day, adjust as you travel from place to place, in and out of small airplanes, etc.
such fabrics like nylon and polyester don't let the skin breath: if it's hot - you'll be sweating, if it's cold - it won't help you get warm... Always choose natural fabrics like viscose, linen and cotton!
Oh my goodness, thank you for actually providing a truly lightweight/minimalist packing video. I am totally on board with all your tips, but I also use Merino wool fabric (naturally odor resistant unlike synthetic), and I am just getting into Tencel/Merino mix. I have just created my channel and will be doing a similar video. I have looked online at female versions on this, and everyone OVERPACKS. They start out by saying don't over pack, then they pack 5 pairs of shoes.... um hello, that is over packing. Great video, I am glad to see other people that are knowledgeable of the different fabrics out there, and are not afraid to clean their clothes in the sink ;)
Yes. They also come in handy for camp sites as well...they allow your feet to breath. Anyhow, you can tie them to the outside of your pack if you don't have room inside it.
So for most of these hacks I mostly follow. However with this video being 6 years old now. I would like to give you my travel tips or hiking tips. 1) I use a scrim net for the pak towel alternative. For a ways to dry off my body I do use bandana. 2) swimming shorts are still applicable both casual and swimming if you purchase plain grey, blue, brick red (brownish red), black or navy. 3) Instead of an sandal I like to pack water shoes coated with candle wax for water repellent. Also can be a great workout shoes and casual wear. 4) I like to bring a pvc jacket and a trash bag (as a pack liner). Other wise I do bring a compact umbrella for the day use. 5) my clothing are all sports material but unusual to some men I do bring panty hose for insulation and the compression pants alternative. 6) for pants, look for a convertable ones at the costco for cheap deal. 7) I like to keep a black long sleeve shirts for casual wear at night. 8) For a workout equipment I like to use a bicycle tube, towel, chair/bath tub (for dips), jump rope, and a pillow case from a dollar store haul for sandbag alt. 9) I do take a cheap drawstring travel backpack for day use. Then I leave my 25-40 liter bag at my hotel or relatives house. 10) for a small pc. I take a my 7 inch tablet, large fresnel lens (to amplify my screen), stand, and a wireless keyboard with mouse pad.
Just came back from a 6 months backpaking trip around South east asia and I totally agree with these tips. Not bringing too much things and the dry towel is definelty a must.
Hi CF, it looks that way. Think you should pack what u love and need - not the latest must haves. Not how I travel the world - too much valuable clobber to worry about, lol. Happy travels:)
A small first aid kit is a must for me. I often get minor cuts and bruises from snorkeling or hiking. Its nice to take care of them immediately as it prevents infection and $$$ from needing to visit a hospital.
Silk is beautiful for traveling - super comfy, light, quick drying... Merino same, but warm, even if wet. I recommend a gore- tex jacket waterproof but breathable and extremely strong.
Great advice! Overpacking has always been a struggle for me. I'd definitely also recommend considering what your luggage is. If you buy to big of a suitcase/pack then you are more than likely going to overpack. Mix/match is definitely the key. Thanks for the info!
Europeans don't wear shorts!?! That's a new one..., at least in southern European countries, specially mediterranean, we wear shorts often, except in winter and later fall... even then some people wear them.... Saying Europeans don't wear shorts is like saying Americans don't go to rodeos just because only some states have that tradition.... Thanks for the video , great tips ;)
Aaron, my thoughts exactly. If they sponsored my world wide travels I would have a hard time arguing their "sound corporate ethics" also. Nothing wrong with it, just jealous. ;-)
For ladies: I did a long distant hiking trip in the south of France last year and found some comfy panties at Target and Walmart made of synthetic material that i could wash and dry overnight. I'm sure La senza or La Vie En Rose have them as well! *you may want more than 3 pairs as we ladies all know - mother nature can surprise you with your period. I always try to plan around - but it's not always possible.
Running shorts can also double as a swim suit and are really light and dry easy, but they can be slightly, um form fitting, on guys so if you're cool with that, they work well.
I feel like packing is so much easier for guys 😂like I wouldn’t dare dream of wearing a basic outfit while on vacation or wearing the same outfit all of them have to be cute , different an short sleeve . Also a lot of storage is taking by hair products/ items of my perfume an lotions .
Everything is about picking lightweight clothing and essentials. This is why I prefer Roadeavour branded travel accessories. They are light and durable at the same time.
Thanks for the tips on choosing a cloth, i've never thought about by knowing the material of cloth, i can save times on washing cloth and save my bag so much weight(i always though backpackers usually filled their bag with tons of clothes lol). Gotta start searching for cloth now before my very first backpaking trip in USA, EXCITED!!!
Making outfits with only 3 shirts and 3 pairs of pants. If you mix and match, you can have 9+ outfits. Also the boardshorts tip - who says you can't wear boardshorts on a hike?
Could you guys make a video on how to save up enough money to travel for an extended period of time ? Maybe something around 6 months like when you guys were on the biggest baddest bucket list ! Love the videos guys , keep 'em coming!!
Hello! Thanks for writing us. Currently filming a lot on the road but we will do our best to get a couple more Travel Tips out soon. Especially one on saving money, although we kind of already did, check the Travel Tips playlist (Saving Money & Time vs Money) Hope that helps!
Great video! I love those types of shirts, but I prefer Columbia's for the prices. For socks, I'd recommend a few wool socks(High wool content-over 60%) You can get by for 2-3 days and it'll barely smell! With any of the right kinds of clothes, you should be able to wash it each night and it'll be dry within 4 hours or so! Do you guys have a favorite all around backpack? Size and brand? I'm more of a minimalist traveler. 2 week trip= 3 Columbia shirts, 1 waterproof- packable jacket, 1 pair of Columbia pants, 2 pairs of shorts, 3 boxers, 3 Smart wool socks, hiking shoes, and sandals. When its cold, 1 set of thermal. Layering is key when its cold!
You don't need separate shorts and long pants. Why not suggest fast drying "guide pants" that have the legs that can be separated from the shorts by zipper? I travel in these constantly, utilizing 3 different neutral colors that match my shirts, don't get intermixed, are lightweight and just like your socks, you know which are clean or dirty.
This helped so much ! (Even though I'm a girl) I'm going on holiday for a week and I was worrying about if I had to take a big suitcase because I never thought of wearing the same clothes twice! 😂 well thanks for helping me !
amazing video but I have a tip for the trousers, there are some trousers like yours but they have a zipper and you can turn them into shorts,so you have a 2 in 1,you can find then in Decathlon shops
Like outdoor products friends.I am very confident in our products. Here is our shop:www.amazon.co.uk/s?merchant=A1AJHANADKQS8P&fallThrough=1 If you are interested in our products, please contact me, I will give a discount.
Hey good job!! I thought I was the only one wearing quick dry travel gear. Well, not the only one, but it's fun to try to turn others on to the concept.
For those of you who are not happy possessor of an Android phone with a mini-usb charger, I suggest having one or several (mini-usb>lightning; mini-usb>type-C) adapters in those little pockets that are all over your bag(s)
Umm... Not sure yet. We're still making plans. I'd like to go to Australia but apparently the more obscure or unheard of places are better. Any suggestions?
Agreed 90% i always take too many art supplies ☺☺ but for clothes I take about the same amount for everything except going home for the holidays. we go back to WYo and South Dakota where you NEED more winter clothes. It's like -20 and last year got over 4ft of snow but yeah, agreed 1/2 the clothes is a good strategy. i always take extra undies and tank tops too. keens and flip flops. straps to sich my clothes and hang stuff on. 1 dress pants that fold/roll into capris sometimes I'll take a doorstop for shady hotels. but honestly it's my art supplies that get me every time 😮😮
Great video! I save even more space by not bringing a towel. I shave my head so it doesn't get too wet, and I just wear my clothes even though I'm wet out of the shower. It'll eventually dry, LOL.
Polyester & nylon super breathable??? Definitely not. Natural materials like cotton, linen or wool are always a better choice, doesn't matter if there's warm or cold climate. The skin needs to breath and it won't in synthetics.
+Dominik Bura Sure, all climbers choose cotton over synthetics... I guess you've never wore proper synthetics or you are just trolling. And remember that when packing synthetics are the lightest material which is the big pro
If you want to walk around with your shirt drenched and sticking to your body during the heat of the day, only to have it freeze you during the night and still be wet when you wake in the morning, by all means go with cotton.
They are spot on with the underwear - I travel/hike the world with just 2 pairs ExOfficio only, lol (they are super comfy, lightweight and dry overnight). Washing as you go is easy and marks you as a serious lightweight traveller. Happy Travels:)
Hey guys. Great video. What about the backpack? Do you take toiletries/medication with you? Where do you keep your money, passport and documents? How much money do you carry around? What camera gear do you use? Do you take a laptop with you, or books or something to write on? Maybe a full list would be helpful. :) Thanks.
Great video! Especially love the tip on light-weight long sleeved shirts - we recently travelled to Mexico and got eaten alive by the Mosquitos out there! Longer sleeves may have helped us out.... :)
Stephanie Vollmer You will love it! So much fun, we hope you savor your first backpacking trip! That question is so hard!!! I think we answer it in our Travel Talk with Nadine. :)
Going Backpacking tru Europe for the first time ever with my wife and honestly kinda scare but exited at the same time. Any suggestion only thing I'm a lil weird about is staying at a Hostel never done this before so don't judge me lol. Anyways super hyped for this
Hi Pedro. Hostels have some of the best locations - a plus. They vary so check out what accomodation options they have, if they have lockers (if not work out how you will secure your packs during the day - Pacsafe packs maybe?) and remember you are with like-minded travellers you can share tips with. Maybe ease into it and book a cheaper hotel every few days until you have gained more confidence:) We have found some really budget friendly hotels in Germany opposite the railway station. Happy travels:)
Oh wow super great that you guys make this video!! Because couple days ago in one of the video i have been wondering how do you pack all your things in one travel backpack..Thanks guys. You guys are super awesome :D
Test your gear before you take it with you. Synthetic blends don't always produce moisture wicking. The rule of three is good, but there's a lot of stuff that you're missing like protective clothing like a bandana. Carrying a bandana has saved my behind more than a few times. The number one piece of gear I use when traveling is "wet ones". Seriously it's hand wipes that have the most often use of any gear when traveling.
Great advice guys, I don't always know how to pack for my husband without stuffing the bag. Tons of advice out there for women, not so much for men. p.s. I'm buying the underwear but believe me... he's gonna wear a fresh one daily!
The trouble with polyester clothing is that it gets really smelly really fast. Really smelly. I've had better luck with poly/cotton blend -still drys faster than all cotton without stinking. Petra44YT silk comes from a silk worm not caterpillars
same same, but different

I'd love a woman's edition.
Looking into it
+Toni Roohr I think this is the woman's edition.
+Toni Roohr We're putting ours up right now. Will send your way :)
Thanks.

***** Yes, I've always found that synthetics make me clammy and uncomfortable.
Viscose is not natural
Are you nuts or have you just never worn good synthetics? These fabrics are made to be breathable
Oh my goodness, thank you for actually providing a truly lightweight/minimalist packing video. what about flip flops for hostel showers?!
Casey Johnston A must, no questions asked!!!
Yes. They also come in handy for camp sites as well...they allow your feet to breath. Anyhow, you can tie them to the outside of your pack if you don't have room inside it.
Waste of time
So for most of these hacks I mostly follow. However with this video being 6 years old now. I would like to give you my travel tips or hiking tips.

The pack towels are the best. Can use them at the beach too and really easy to wash
It was more of advertising than hack
Not really packing hacks, just a shopping list, delivered smugly.
Spot on - bit of an oversite!!!! There are some countries you'd rather not risk the hospital, lol!!!! Happy Travels:)
Silk is beautiful for traveling - super comfy, light, quick drying... Merino same, but warm, even if wet. I recommend a gore- tex jacket waterproof but breathable and extremely strong.
this is my first time travelling .. I'm a south african & on my way to Texas in the end of May !!! super excited THANKS for the great tips guys
Great advice! Overpacking has always been a struggle for me. I'd definitely also recommend considering what your luggage is. If you buy to big of a suitcase/pack then you are more than likely going to overpack. Mix/match is definitely the key. Thanks for the info!
my brother's a runner and he always wears running shorts as swim shorts bc they often are more stylish and like you said, you can run and swim in them
Europeans don't wear shorts!?!
It's not some states, it more like 90% of states that don't go to rodeos
There are rodeos in more than half of the states.
I’m going Backpacking this September with my sister & niece! And I can’t wait !!! So thankful for your channel and all of the tips!!!
the f*ck.. Europeans don't wear shorts? That's quite an unworldly statement
I better go into my closet and yell at my pants for faking being shorts.
Mark Møller Hansen yell harder😂
Yeah in France there’s a lot of shorts, really short shorts, colourful short shorts
maskevito yes, I do
Halfway into a three month tip through Europe and I still can't pack for crap. Thanks for the video guys!
Enjoy your trip! :)
vagabrothers Thanks! Looking forward to seeing more of your travels.
Are you guys sponsored by Patagonia?
+Jon B Baca Quite obviously seeing as basically every single piece of equipment/clothing is from Patagonia
Jon B Baca or they just really like Patagonia...if you have the $ and can get all your travel stuff at one place, why wouldn't you?
I'm sure it was the sound corporate ethics that made all the difference. :)
Aaron, my thoughts exactly. If they sponsored my world wide travels I would have a hard time arguing their "sound corporate ethics" also. Nothing wrong with it, just jealous. ;-)
Patagonia makes good products, but overpriced
For ladies: I did a long distant hiking trip in the south of France last year and found some comfy panties at Target and Walmart made of synthetic material that i could wash and dry overnight. I'm sure La senza or La Vie En Rose have them as well! *you may want more than 3 pairs as we ladies all know - mother nature can surprise you with your period. I always try to plan around - but it's not always possible.
Never ever ever ever ever ever wear synthetic panties. Cannot stress on this enough.
I've watched a few packing and traveling videos but this is by far my favorite.
Running shorts can also double as a swim suit and are really light and dry easy, but they can be slightly, um form fitting, on guys so if you're cool with that, they work well.
Essentials things that im going to bring in my backpack trip for SURE
a must see video if you are backpacking on your next trip..
Best travel advice ever: 'pack half the clothes you think you'll need, and twice the amount cash!" thanks!
I've binged watched a few "What to pack" videos and this is the best so far! To the point, good detail. NOOICE!
Really? They forgot the first aid kit, the toiletries etc etc. What did it all weigh and what did it look like packed???
I feel like packing is so much easier for guys 😂like I wouldn’t dare dream of wearing a basic outfit while on vacation or wearing the same outfit all of them have to be cute , different an short sleeve . Also a lot of storage is taking by hair products/ items of my perfume an lotions .
Everything is about picking lightweight clothing and essentials. This is why I prefer Roadeavour branded travel accessories. They are light and durable at the same time.
I'm leaving for a two week trip to Portugal in 12 days and I had no idea what to ring and how to pack. Thanks for this video, it's super helpful :)
Hey Corinne! Glad we can help. Stay tuned as more we have plenty more Travel Tips coming up. Where are you going in Portugal?
I'll try to see as much as possible, so Lisbon and surroundings, then north to Coimbra and Porto and then south for a couple of days in the Algarve :)
Enjoy it!
Great tips guys! Thats pretty much what I said to my fiends when we went to Thailand. Take half of the clothes and twice as much cash. Amen
This is the youtube channel I have been looking for, currently preparing my year long backpacking adventure!
Glad you found us Jack! Where are you thinking about traveling to?
vagabrothers Traveling for 1 year! starting in South East Asia, then Europe and finally South America.
I've personally found all of these tips to be useful in my travels. Cheers!
+DuhLime that's great to hear dude! Which one do you find the most useful?
Making outfits with only 3 shirts and 3 pairs of pants. If you mix and match, you can have 9+ outfits. Also the boardshorts tip - who says you can't wear boardshorts on a hike?
Yes I need this tips for my next video project: Traveling!
That sounds great , thanks for replying !!
Oh my lord. Found your newer videos first. Great Scott, Marty. We've gone back in time!
New suscriber here! Convinced me at 2.36 hahah but seriously I need to use the "I'm not sure if I need it" tip, thanks guys!
My husband loves the excofficios! lol. Your travel tips are on point!
This helped so much ! (Even though I'm a girl) I'm going on holiday for a week and I was worrying about if I had to take a big suitcase because I never thought of wearing the same clothes twice! 😂 well thanks for helping me !
Haha loved the socks colors trick to know which one are dirty or clean !
Thanks Anais!
amazing video but I have a tip for the trousers, there are some trousers like yours but they have a zipper and you can turn them into shorts,so you have a 2 in 1,you can find then in Decathlon shops
Very helpful video guys.
+woltersworld cheers dude!!!
+woltersworld cheers Wolter!

Wang Candy love this
I love Wolters World
Hey good job!! I thought I was the only one wearing quick dry travel gear. Well, not the only one, but it's fun to try to turn others on to the concept.
For those of you who are not happy possessor of an Android phone with a mini-usb charger, I suggest having one or several (mini-usb>lightning; mini-usb>type-C) adapters in those little pockets that are all over your bag(s)
agree with just packing one carry on. haven't lost luggage since I began doing this...
+Carlos Ramos nice!!! Checking bags is the worst!
Planning on taking a gap year so this was actually pretty useful!! Thanks.
Cool! Where are you planning on going Emily?
Umm... Not sure yet. We're still making plans. I'd like to go to Australia but apparently the more obscure or unheard of places are better. Any suggestions?
you should do a video about how to choose a backpack ..cheers guys
can you do a more detailed review of how you pack your bags
Agreed 90%
i always take too many art supplies ☺☺
but for clothes I take about the same amount for everything except going home for the holidays. we go back to WYo and South Dakota where you NEED more winter clothes. It's like -20 and last year got over 4ft of snow
but yeah, agreed 1/2 the clothes is a good strategy. i always take extra undies and tank tops too.
keens and flip flops.
straps to sich my clothes and hang stuff on.
1 dress
pants that fold/roll into capris
sometimes I'll take a doorstop for shady hotels.
but honestly it's my art supplies that get me every time 😮😮
Great tips, real scenario examples of how to get organized during travels and to make it easier and lighter for you... :)
Not sure every girl is gonna follow these instructions, but very nice video anyway ;)! Very helpfull for my next trip to Italy.
Thanks Isabelle! Did our best :)
Great video! I save even more space by not bringing a towel. I shave my head so it doesn't get too wet, and I just wear my clothes even though I'm wet out of the shower. It'll eventually dry, LOL.
Omg. Watching this in 2018 when I only saw my first Vagabrothers video last year. So baby-faced! 😂
If you want to walk around with your shirt drenched and sticking to your body during the heat of the day, only to have it freeze you during the night and still be wet when you wake in the morning, by all means go with cotton.
this answer is like so real and so much sass in one lmao
Going to the Himalayas, Nepal, and Tibet next summer! Thanks for the helpful tips :)
How awesome! Alex is jealous! Travel safe and take lots of photos!
will do!
Awesome video! Maybe u guys should travel to Norway? Up in the north u can see the northlight!
Awesome video fellas , when i first started traveling international , i use to over pack , so this is very helpful for beginner travelers
:) Thanks.
This video really helped! I'm backpacking through Asia for two months. Also thank you for being so cute 😎... "Oh my god shoes"
Haha :) enjoy your trip!
this will be good for when I go to New Zealand next year for 6 months :)
GREAT video guys and filled with surprisingly good / solid information.
Thanks for the information, in the month of July I will climb a mountain in the Peruvian Andes, greetings from Peru
Ah man, I am such a shocking over-packer. Definitely going to try and incorporate some of these tips when I hit up Bali soon! :D
LOUIS SENT ME. GOOD VID!
cheers!
Great video! Especially love the tip on light-weight long sleeved shirts - we recently travelled to Mexico and got eaten alive by the Mosquitos out there! Longer sleeves may have helped us out.... :)
Good point. Long sleeves are great for UV protection too and temple visits where shoulders must be covered. Happy travels:)
Great advice!
Awesome video! Haven't done a backpacking trip, but looking foward to it next year! What is your guys favorite place?
Stephanie Vollmer You will love it! So much fun, we hope you savor your first backpacking trip! That question is so hard!!! I think we answer it in our Travel Talk with Nadine. :)
I just subscribed to you today and this were helpful tips to show my "heavy packer friends" great video!
Cool! Glad you find our videos useful. Cheers!
Muito bom, Parabéns. I do love it. You are the best travel channel, i mean it .
Do you have a video about what other essential things is needed to travel, like which filters for water etc? Thank you, Go bless 🙏👍
probably my favourite pair of brothers on TH-cam! Thanks for the tips! :)
Thanks for watching!!!
I'm so glad that i'm doing all of those lol

Oh wow super great that you guys make this video!! Because couple days ago in one of the video i have been wondering how do you pack all your things in one travel backpack..Thanks guys. You guys are super awesome :D
This really helped!! I'm going to Australia for year.
Thanks guys love the tips I compete alot in bjjj so I'm always traveling thanks for this vid
Great video! Love all the tips!
You guys rock. Keep up the good work.
You guys, so entertaining!
Hahah thank you Louise - make sure you subscribe and check out some of our newer videos :)

Great advice guys, I don't always know how to pack for my husband without stuffing the bag. Tons of advice out there for women, not so much for men. p.s. I'm buying the underwear but believe me... he's gonna wear a fresh one daily!
Glad we can help!
