@@nursey1332 that is awesome... I love to create and have been doing it for 19 years ... as for ordering .... you can either start with a kit or just go for the colors you want ... it really depends on how much money you have to spend and this can be quite addictive ;-)

@@MrTieDye thank you so much for the response,so far I'm very happy with the results, it's great to learn some ttechnics and then apply it with my own ideas.very grateful to you.
Thank you for this. Its the best explanation I've seen. I'm giving it a go later with just navy but I'm going to water it down in stages in seperate bottles to change the depth of colour(like tattoo ink) and leave white patches too. I hope it works! Thanks for all the tips. I got those bottles too. They look so easy to use!

@MrTieDye it didn't go well. I would like to send you some pics of possible? The tongue was a struggle to keep white and bleeding to rewhiten was a mistake but I dyed then twice more to cover the purple and pink from the bleach and they are OK.NOT at all what I imagined or wanted but I'll wear them. I'll give it a go again but dye the tongue next time as that caused the main issues.
Thank you!!! This was so informational and you took your time trying to make sure your process was understood! Can’t wait to try to dye my shoes, I feel way more confident after washing and HI-FIVE for the beard 🤘🏼

Getting ready to tie-dye a pair of my older pink converse that I've had for a couple years and have been a good pair of shoes for me. It's time for them to have a face lift and what better way to do that than to add some dye. Looks like I will have to go to the laundry mat since I have a new front loader and it doesn't allow me to just do a spin cycle without rinsing or washing them.
I know this is a year old, but want to think you for the video. My fiance and I are getting married on Halloween this year. (Clicked and subscribed...tie dye has become our new favorite family time project and I know we'll be back for more advice! LoL ❤💛💚💙💜)
yeah it is the liquid dyes mixing or blending together when applied next to each other ... if you just add just a little bit of Purple, or Green to Orange, you get Brown ... So when dyeing shoes, I try to surround the Orange with colors that it blends better with like Yellow or Fuchsia Here is a video where I use purple and orange to tie-dye a tee, but tin this case I can control the blending some by applying the darker color first and letting it spread out some, then adding the orange to it ... a little bit of orange in the purple is not enough to show much change : th-cam.com/video/TAo9BgtpZ2Q/w-d-xo.html One more side note on the mixing of colors, here is a video where I dye Spiral s in various ways, on the first one, I use just Primary Colors and mix them on the tee shirt to create a full rainbow spiral, it is the first tee I dye in this video : th-cam.com/video/2UJkPKHvruk/w-d-xo.html
thank you... yeah I had to get some orders done to catch up on bills .... but I am going to work on more videos and hopefully start getting at least one a week done
I use one cup of soda ash to one gallon of hot water and it can be used and reused .... as it gets low, I just make more and add it to my bucket... so you can soak as many items that you want and then save the rest for your next batch here is how I mix it .... th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html

When I dye my shoes I pull out the soles before the SA soak, if the shoes let me...some are glued down better than others. I find that the shoes are easier to dye with them out, the washing is easier and they dry far faster. I also got tired of the soles getting ruined by the soaking, I think the SA is hard on the glue. When the dyeing process is all done, I simply glue them back in place.
yeah most of the shoes I dyed, the soles were glued in very good and others would come out during the process so I would use Shoe Goo to glue them back in
That is a great way to save a tee or a hoodie that has a stain on it... one thing to consider... with Procion Dyes I use, they work on natural fibers and not at all on Poly ... so if the hoodie is mostly cotton then you should be fine.... if it is a 50/50 blend, then the hoodie may have a bit of a faded look to it, but I think it will still camouflage the ink stains 😉 ........ have fun and I wish you success!!.... OH, and hoodie being thicker fabric do take some more work to get them tied up and dyed ... here is my hoodie playlist to give you some insight : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuqU-VjaVYYOBOjvEFZgxFfj.html
This may have been asked, but I didn't want to read through 300+ comments. I have a front loading washing machine. Would spinning out shoes damage my machine, or even be effective? Are there any other techniques for that, or would air drying be my best bet?
I put mine in the machine with the cotton facing out .... so a front loader would be more difficult to get them situated and balanced, but yes I think you can just air dry them for a while
soda ash is a dry powder that you mix 1 cup with 1 gallons of water ... it raises the pH level of the cotton fibers when you soak the shoes or tees in it... he higher pH is what activates the Procion Dyes that I use and causes a chemical bond between the dye and the cotton fibers Here is how I mix or make soda ash: th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
awesome... yes it is nice to have some ideas to work with when it is time to do some tie-dye ... check out some of my playlists, I try to group certain types of dyeing together and some videos are in more than one play list
it is spelled Synthrapol ... it is a pH neutral soap that helps keep the dye suspended in the water while washing out your tie dye so it reduces the chance of back staining in the washer .... I buy it from dharma ..... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html some people use Blue Dawn instead as it is also a pH neutral soap, but I have not used that myself
Yes... the soda ash is what activate the Procion Dyes and causes the dye to bond with the cotton fibers of the shoes .... but you can soak them in soda ash and then set them on end to drip dry some... once they are just barely damp, then you can start dyeing them, batch for 24-48 hours, I do mine in a tub with a lid so the stay wet... (if the dye drys out, then the bonding stops) ... then you can rinse in the sink, then I just do repeated soaks in hot water until color stops coming out, then I would wrap in a towel and squeeze to get some more of the liquid out, then let them air dry... oh and I do any re shaping I need to while they are still wet... sometimes the heel part is mis-shapen a bit, but that maybe be from the spinning out I do 😉✌🏻 ... I hope this helps
OMG, so beautiful! Thanks for really getting into the process to make sure you have a vibrant and colorfast dye job. The only thing I would change is, that yellow is so freaking pretty I wish there was more of it in the pattern. But that's my choice when I start to dye. Definitely be catching up on all your other videos. Thanks!
Thank you and yes I love to have the brightest colors possible and was 'called' a couple years back to start sharing my knowledge that I have picked up over the last 19 years ..... I am a shy person by nature, but teaching tie-dye in the schools for the last 15 years set me up perfect to create these videos for the World and beyond. I am glad you like them and on some shoes there is more yellow.... I just go with the flow of the moment as I create the shoes ... have fun on your tie-dye adventure!!
to avoid Brown, I would not put Orange next to Purple, Blue, or Green .... mostly I try to surround Orange with either Fuchsia or Yellow .... also, avoid putting Yellow next to Purple I hope this helps... have fun ✌️
Hi this is the first time I had seen your video. Where do you get soda ash and the other preparation stuff? They look really good. What do you sell them for?
Welcome to my channel, I am glad you found it... as for the Soda ash... it is what activates the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash. Here is how I mix or make soda ash: th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html and I do a prewash in a textile soap called Syntrapol which has been replaced by these two soaps at Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=synthrapol OR.... here are some other pH neutral soaps that some dyers use and can be found locally : Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner (I found this at Home Depot) I have not sold any shoes for a while, but I was selling them for around $100.00 ... basically I was charging $50.00 to dye them and then whatever the blanks cost... I was buy-in them from www.shoes.com ... they had discount codes all the time, plus you can sign up for their saving club and build points good toward more shoes the other place I found good deals on Cons and Vans was www.famousfootwear.com ... they had a club to join and gave discount now and then... some were just buy one pair , get another 50% off .... but when I was dyeing a lot of shoes, I would use the code to stock up anyways, I hope this helps you, but just in case, here is my Beginner's Playlist that has lots of tips and tricks to tie-dye :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
I have not, but the main thing I look for is the material.... cotton dyes up great so if they are cotton, then they should take some dye..... but they also have to be washed to remove the excess dyes and the cons, vans and kids all have dyed great
thank you and yes I do, here is my preferred method of making thick water and dye .... th-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/w-d-xo.html and here is a second video with a different product .... th-cam.com/video/0s-7cOvM6tU/w-d-xo.html
@@MrTieDye thank you for sharing your link. I'm just getting into tie dying and absolutely love your instructional videos. You have awesome designs. I appreciate you sharing your skills and designs.
I used to do a lot of these, but I am not doing them anymore... I have just a couple pair left in my store and a few pair of white blanks that I may dye up some day and sell.... but I did these for many years and had fun helping people to Walk on Rainbows ... these are the dyed ones I currently have : mrtiedye.myshopify.com/collections/shoes
What kind of dye are you using in the bottles? I am going to order a set of the bottles and would also like to get some of the dye as the colors are beautiful and bright. I've got about 12 pair of converse to dye in multiple sizes of the families I am going to experiment with. Thanks
I am using the same dyes I do for my tees.... Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes .... and yes I have dyed hundreds of Converse over the years... people love Walking on Rainbows!! ... have fun!!
yes, I imagine that if you did not soak them the first time, then most of the color washed out when you rinsed them... so Yes, if you do a soak in soda ash and then re-dye them and let them batch, then you will have lasting color ✌️
sorry for my pronunciation.... it is Synthrapol soap from dharma ... it is a pH neutral soap that helps keep the excess dyes suspended in the water during wash out so it does not back stain and 'muddy' a dye up .... a lot of dyers will use Blue Dawn Dish Soap instead as it to is pH neutral so it works in the same way
Me encantó!!!!
Gracias!!! Espanish por favor ! Mi traductor no funciona
I do a pre wash to start with Synthrapol Soap, it is a pH neutral textile soap.... a lot of dyers will use Blue Dawn Dish soap instead as it to is pH neutral .... then I rinse the shoes and then I soak in soda ash as that is what activates the Procion Dyes I use ✌🏻
Where can i go to get the pre wash and the soda ash? My girlfriend and i just found your channel and i can already tell with your tips we are going rock it!
I buy my synthrapol from dharma, the same place I buy my dyes from .... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html ........... and the soda ash can be purchased from there as well, but it can also be purchased from pool supply stores as it is the same chemical they use to adjust the pH .... ask for soda ash or Sodium Carbonate .... another place you can find soda ash is in the laundry isle at the store, it is called Washing Soda ... just check the label and it should say 100% soda ash or sodium carbonate .... and one more name I have heard it called by is pH Up .... have fun and be aware the dye spread quickly on the shoes, so I add the dye slowly and I put colors that will blend nicely next to each other, like orange for example, I make sure to surround it with yellow, red or fuchsia
I did a prewash with Synthrapol Soap, it is a textile detergent from Dharma that is pH neutral .... and then the soda sh is what activate the Procion Dyes, so if you use these dyes, you will need soda ash ..... here is my Beginner's Playlist to give an overview of tie-dyeing with Procion dyes : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
I think that comes down to personal choice, I will set mine outside where they may get a little bit of sun to speed the drying, but I also know that direct sun exposure for long periods of time can fade the fabric some.... so I prefer partial sun or shade when I dry my shoes .... really it is personal choice ..... this art was so secretive for so many years that many people just developed their own processes which is why you can get so many answers when asking what seems to be a simple question ... so I show how I do it and recommend people find what works best for them, be it my way, someone else's way, or a way you come up with yourself, or you blend a couple peoples ways.... I hope this helped more than confused you ✌🏻💚🙏 and for me, I think putting in the dryer is too noisy, and I am not sure how the shoes would hold up to that.... I not saying you cannot do it that way, just that I have not so I cannot speak to it
Soda ash is what activate the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash. for the shoes, after they have been dyed and batched for a couple days, I do a rinse and wash on them, just in the sink and then let them soak in a basin... once they are done being washed... I rinse and then I use my washer to spin out the excess liquid... this squishes them just a bit, so I re-shape them a bit and then I set them outside to air dry ✌️
I do not use much since it is a small pail, just a few drops will get you some suds and that is all I want... then I change the water when it cools and add a couple more drops.... but after a couple water changes, I do not put synthrapol in any more.... but I keep soaking until the water stays clear... then I spin out the excess water in the washer and then shape the heel a bit and air dry ... thank you and you are welcome 🙏
yes, when using Procion dyes, you need soda ash at that is what activates the dyes and then they bond with the cotton fibers of the tee, tapestry or shoes in this case 😉✌🏻
it was Synthrapol Soap.... it is a pH neutral textile soap sold by Dharma... they now make their own textile soap and that is the one I will use when I run out of Synthrapol .... many dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral this is important as soda ash raises the pH to activate the dyes, so this lowers the pH and stops the dye bonding process
@@MrTieDye since I sent you that question 4 months ago, my family has been tie dying like crazy. I got dye and fabric detergent from Dharma and now we wear our creations every day. Thank you for all your great, informative videos.
I use Synthrapol Soap as it does not have any additives in it that might interfere with the dyeing process... some people use Blue Dawn Dish soap ... the main thing is to remove any treatments added at the factory that might interfere with the dyeing process ... so a mild soap should be fine
I use fiber reactive Procion Dyes and the soda ash (also known as Sodium Carbonate) is what activate the dyes and allows them the bond with the cotton fibers .... here is my Beginner's Playlist and the third video is on how I mix or make soda ash : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
if you are meaning at the end for the washing of the shoes... then yes, just water and a bit of Synthrapol soap ✌️ ... I do this a couple times to make sure all of the un-bonded dyes get washed away ... once done, then I rinse with plain water, then spin the excess water out of the shoes, then air dry
I love, love your videos so does my 8 yr old granddaughter. We have made a few tshirts from your tutorial for her. I tie dyed some shoes but the colors are coming out dull, I'm using procion from dharma trading. I mixed the colors on room temperature water and soak them in soda ash for 25 mins prior to dying. Please can you help me I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Thank you in advance. Thank you for your videos.
thank you and you are welcome. For shoes, the first thing, are they cotton shoes?? polyester does not take these kind of dyes?? I worked mostly with Converse, Vans, or Keds as I knew they were cotton. Then I did a prewash on them to make sure there is nothing the manufacturer sprayed on them as this could interfere with the dyes. Then after I soak in soda ash, I spin out the excess in the washer, too much soda ash in the shoes means extra liquid which can dilute the dyes, or it can cause them to run even more. Next, after I have applied the dye, I let them it for a few minutes and then I will go back and touch up any spots that look faded by adding a little extra dye... with converse being made from canvas, the dye can soak into the thicker fabric and the outer surface can then look faded Then I batch mine in tub with a lid so they stay damp while batching, if they dry out, then the dye bonding stops... also, I will toss a couple wet rags in the bin just to help keep the humidity up. and I batch mine for 24-48 hours before I do the rinsing and washing. I hope one of these tips help you... I wish you success on your next pair
1 year later I see that you replied to my question. We want to dye another pair of shoes. Yes they are cotton (converse) I pre washed them like you said but maybe they are too wet when we dye them. I only have a front loader washer. How do I make sure that they are damp and not too wet? Thank you
I tried this on a pair of slip on vans with the intention of doing a spiral effect. My green and orange mixed and I had to cover up the top with black over most of the colors predominantly the blue and green. What can I do to fix this? I’m not a novice tie dyer but first pair of shoes. Should have practiced 😕
yeah the dye does spread a lot with shoes..... as for a fix, I am not sure, I have not tried using a color remover on shoes before, but I would go for the Rit color remover over bleach though ... I wish you success, sorry I cannot be of more help BUT, on your net pair of shoes, if you want to get a spiral design, you can thicken the dyes some and paint it on, I soak my shoes in soda ash, spin out the excess and then I let them dry completely and then I mix up thick water and mix in some dyes and then paint it on
Did you say you soaked them in soda ash again after rinsing the dye? Or is that soap? Thanks I just couldn't tell if you said soda ash or something else.
After the rinsing, I add a little bit of Synthrapol soap to help wash and remove the rest of the un-bonded dyes ... Blue Dawn Dish soap can also be used as it to is a pH neutral soap ✌️
Soda ash, also know as Sodium Carbonate, is the chemical that raises the pH level of the cotton fibers and then the dye reacts and bond with them... so, when using Procion Dyes, soda ash is needed to set the dyes .... you can buy it where you buy your dyes from ... I try to collect links from other dyers around the world, here is one I have for the UK : www.georgeweil.com/dyes-and-assistants/procion-mx-dyes/ also, I buy mine from a local Pool Supply Store as it is a chemical also used in pools and hot tubs .... you can find product like pH Up, or Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, just check the labels .... also, if you still cannot find it, you can heat Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) in the oven and turn it into soda ash... here is my video on soda ash where I demo this : th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
I started with a little bit of Synthrapol Soap to remove anything that may have been applied by the manufacturer ... then I rinsed then, next I soaked them in Soda Ash solution... this is what activates the Procion Dyes tat I use
Normally if you keep the water temperature below 30 degrees Celsius there shouldn’t be a problem with the glue giving way, at least that’s the case for the sole. I’m not sure if that’s true for the label on the insole as well.
nope... it does not hold the dye, so it just washes out .... now and then there is some slight staining for some reason, but the label is plenty readable
I washed them in warm water with Synthrapol soap ... and apparently as of the date I am answering this question, they do not have it in stock, but here is an alternative soap if you want to go that route : www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/dharma-professional-textile-detergent.html it is a mild, pH neutral soap that I use also to do my wash out with tie-dye .... a lot of dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap instead as it to is pH neutral.
I used thickened dye to paint the black lines on and then I used thickened dye in rainbow colors to to do the spaces.... BUT, you could use sharpies and do something similar ;) Here is how I made the thick water to make the thick dye from : th-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/w-d-xo.html BUT< now I have been using Superclear as my thick liquid as it comes pre mixed : www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/superclear.html
the washer needs to spin out at the end of the rinse cycle so you can put damp clothes into the dryer... I set my washer to that point in the cycle ... I know some washer do not allow for this though 😉✌🏻 BUT, yes, if you cannot spin out, then letting them air dry works perfect and the radiator will speed the process
@@MrTieDye thank you you have saved me my son wanted to do some tye dye with me but wanted to make sure i was doing it right so that it wouldnt wear out in a few days you do such an amazing job uour work is ace x

Getting ready to tie-dye a pair of my older pink converse that I've had for a couple years and have been a good pair of shoes for me. It's time for them to have a face lift and what better way to do that than to add some dye. Looks like I will have to go to the laundry mat since I have a new front loader and it doesn't allow me to just do a spin cycle without rinsing or washing them.
you can also just leave them out to dry and then when you are ready to dye them, just lightly spray them with soda ash
Those are gorgeous
Thank you... I love Walking on Rainbows!!

I have been playing with this art for 22 years and I love to experiment and share what I find with others ... glad you like it and you are welcome 🙏✌🏻
Can you explain the orange turning brown when dyed with other colors bear it? I don't quite understand.
yeah it is the liquid dyes mixing or blending together when applied next to each other ... if you just add just a little bit of Purple, or Green to Orange, you get Brown ...
So when dyeing shoes, I try to surround the Orange with colors that it blends better with like Yellow or Fuchsia
Here is a video where I use purple and orange to tie-dye a tee, but tin this case I can control the blending some by applying the darker color first and letting it spread out some, then adding the orange to it ... a little bit of orange in the purple is not enough to show much change : th-cam.com/video/TAo9BgtpZ2Q/w-d-xo.html
One more side note on the mixing of colors, here is a video where I dye Spiral s in various ways, on the first one, I use just Primary Colors and mix them on the tee shirt to create a full rainbow spiral, it is the first tee I dye in this video : th-cam.com/video/2UJkPKHvruk/w-d-xo.html

How much Soda Ash and water do you use for a batch? And can you soak more than one pair per batch?
I use one cup of soda ash to one gallon of hot water and it can be used and reused .... as it gets low, I just make more and add it to my bucket... so you can soak as many items that you want and then save the rest for your next batch
here is how I mix it .... th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
I am just getting into tie dye and was wondering where you get you dies 😁

When I dye my shoes I pull out the soles before the SA soak, if the shoes let me...some are glued down better than others. I find that the shoes are easier to dye with them out, the washing is easier and they dry far faster. I also got tired of the soles getting ruined by the soaking, I think the SA is hard on the glue. When the dyeing process is all done, I simply glue them back in place.
yeah most of the shoes I dyed, the soles were glued in very good and others would come out during the process so I would use Shoe Goo to glue them back in
1st time viewer. Those are beautiful! My son got ink stains on a brand new pink hoodie, I'm hoping to tie dye with black to blend it in. Fingers 🤞

Can I just hang or air dry(til damp) the shoes? I don't have a washer available to spin the shoes.
Good tutorial btw. Thanks!
yes after they are rinsed well, then they can just air dry ... the spinning out just speed it up by removing some of the liquid ✌🏻
@@MrTieDye Thank you! 😃
This may have been asked, but I didn't want to read through 300+ comments. I have a front loading washing machine. Would spinning out shoes damage my machine, or even be effective? Are there any other techniques for that, or would air drying be my best bet?
I put mine in the machine with the cotton facing out .... so a front loader would be more difficult to get them situated and balanced, but yes I think you can just air dry them for a while
Can you please tell me what you use to presoak BEFORE soda ash
What is soda ash
soda ash is a dry powder that you mix 1 cup with 1 gallons of water ... it raises the pH level of the cotton fibers when you soak the shoes or tees in it... he higher pH is what activates the Procion Dyes that I use and causes a chemical bond between the dye and the cotton fibers
Here is how I mix or make soda ash: th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
That was awesome n thx for explaining so well
Glad it was helpful and you are welcome 🙏
I make a batch of tie dye at least once a month. i like to watch these tho for ideas
awesome... yes it is nice to have some ideas to work with when it is time to do some tie-dye ... check out some of my playlists, I try to group certain types of dyeing together and some videos are in more than one play list
What is cinterpaul ?.. where do you buy it or how is it written
it is spelled Synthrapol ... it is a pH neutral soap that helps keep the dye suspended in the water while washing out your tie dye so it reduces the chance of back staining in the washer .... I buy it from dharma ..... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html
some people use Blue Dawn instead as it is also a pH neutral soap, but I have not used that myself
Do I need to use soda ash? I don't have a washer to do this with. I use my apartments washer and it cost money and I can't turn off the water
Yes... the soda ash is what activate the Procion Dyes and causes the dye to bond with the cotton fibers of the shoes .... but you can soak them in soda ash and then set them on end to drip dry some... once they are just barely damp, then you can start dyeing them, batch for 24-48 hours, I do mine in a tub with a lid so the stay wet...
After the first prewash and rinse in cold water do you put them in the washing machine to get the excess water out the put them into the soda ash?
after I rinse them from the pre wash I just put them straight into the soda ash, but you can spin them out if you want
Ok what colors do I avoid putting next to each other to avoid brown ?
to avoid Brown, I would not put Orange next to Purple, Blue, or Green .... mostly I try to surround Orange with either Fuchsia or Yellow .... also, avoid putting Yellow next to Purple
I hope this helps...
Here is how I mix or make soda ash: th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
and I do a prewash in a textile soap called Syntrapol which has been replaced by these two soaps at Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=synthrapol
OR.... here are some other pH neutral soaps that some dyers use and can be found locally : Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner (I found this at Home Depot)
I have not sold any shoes for a while, but I was selling them for around $100.00 ... basically I was charging $50.00 to dye them and then whatever the blanks cost... I was buy-in them from www.shoes.com ... they had discount codes all the time, plus you can sign up for their saving club and build points good toward more shoes
the other place I found good deals on Cons and Vans was www.famousfootwear.com ... they had a club to join and gave discount now and then... some were just buy one pair , get another 50% off .... but when I was dyeing a lot of shoes, I would use the code to stock up
anyways, I hope this helps you, but just in case, here is my Beginner's Playlist that has lots of tips and tricks to tie-dye :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
Have you ever try white slipper
I have not, but the main thing I look for is the material.... cotton dyes up great so if they are cotton, then they should take some dye..... but they also have to be washed to remove the excess dyes and the cons, vans and kids all have dyed great
So you don’t do the Vinegar and cold water trick to lock in the colors ?
Very cool. I am going to try this. How do you make thick water and the thick black? Do you have a video on that? Thank you :-)

Awesome, I am glad to be of help .... Have fun
If I didn't use a soda ash before I dyed the shoes can I redye them again but with a soda ash soak?
yes, I imagine that if you did not soak them the first time, then most of the color washed out when you rinsed them... so Yes, if you do a soak in soda ash and then re-dye them and let them batch, then you will have lasting color ✌️
Hello, awesome teacher. What is Center Paul?
sorry for my pronunciation.... it is Synthrapol soap from dharma ... it is a pH neutral soap that helps keep the excess dyes suspended in the water during wash out so it does not back stain and 'muddy' a dye up .... a lot of dyers will use Blue Dawn Dish Soap instead as it to is pH neutral so it works in the same way
Would this work for some Air Jordan's that has Suede on them?
Me encantó!!!!

Gracias!!! Espanish por favor ! Mi traductor no funciona
What do you pre-soak the shoes in along with the warm water
Do you have to do the synthrapol part ? Or can you just wash them with regular soap?
Can you do a red and black tie dye just those too colors
yes... two color tie-dyes look awesome and red and black are great colors together... although black looks good with most all colors
Do you have to have SODA ASH and what was the product you soaked the shoes in on the first step?
I did a prewash with Synthrapol Soap, it is a textile detergent from Dharma that is pH neutral .... and then the soda sh is what activate the Procion Dyes, so if you use these dyes, you will need soda ash ..... here is my Beginner's Playlist to give an overview of tie-dyeing with Procion dyes : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
Why do others use the dryer or sun to dry their shoes, and you don’t? Also when I mix the Dharma procion fiber active dye do I use warm/hot water?
I think that comes down to personal choice, I will set mine outside where they may get a little bit of sun to speed the drying, but I also know that direct sun exposure for long periods of time can fade the fabric some.... so I prefer partial sun or shade when I dry my shoes ....
really it is personal choice ..... this art was so secretive for so many years that many people just developed their own processes which is why you can get so many answers when asking what seems to be a simple question ... so I show how I do it and recommend people find what works best for them, be it my way, someone else's way, or a way you come up with yourself, or you blend a couple peoples ways.... I hope this helped more than confused you ✌🏻💚🙏
and for me, I think putting in the dryer is too noisy, and I am not sure how the shoes would hold up to that.... I not saying you cannot do it that way, just that I have not so I cannot speak to it
What is soda ash?
Soda ash is what activate the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash.

The shoes are awesome! Your talent amazes me! I just started tie dyeing & you are such an inspiration! 😎✌️
How do you dry your converse shoes without shrinking them?
for the shoes, after they have been dyed and batched for a couple days, I do a rinse and wash on them, just in the sink and then let them soak in a basin... once they are done being washed... I rinse and then I use my washer to spin out the excess liquid... this squishes them just a bit, so I re-shape them a bit and then I set them outside to air dry ✌️
Mr. Tie dye what solution did you use with the warm water in the beginning to strip any treatment? Love your work and follow regularly ❤✌
Thank you and I used a bit of Synthrapol soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap as it to is a pH neutral soap)

@@Cljtcommander064 you are welcome, I am glad to be of help... I love to see other have success
How much Synthrapol soap should we use for one pair of Cons in a tub similar to the one you used in this awesome video?
I do not use much since it is a small pail, just a few drops will get you some suds and that is all I want... then I change the water when it cools and add a couple more drops.... but after a couple water changes, I do not put synthrapol in any more.... but I keep soaking until the water stays clear... then I spin out the excess water in the washer and then shape the heel a bit and air dry ... thank you and you are welcome 🙏
do you use soda ash ti fix the colors of the t-shirts? salt?
yes, when using Procion dyes, you need soda ash at that is what activates the dyes and then they bond with the cotton fibers of the tee, tapestry or shoes in this case 😉✌🏻
como se chama a agulha que voce usa e onde comprar?Obrigado estou aprendendo :)
What was the stuff you used to soak the shoes at the end? Not the soda ash, the final soak.
it was Synthrapol Soap.... it is a pH neutral textile soap sold by Dharma... they now make their own textile soap and that is the one I will use when I run out of Synthrapol .... many dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral
this is important as soda ash raises the pH to activate the dyes, so this lowers the pH and stops the dye bonding process
@@MrTieDye since I sent you that question 4 months ago, my family has been tie dying like crazy. I got dye and fabric detergent from Dharma and now we wear our creations every day. Thank you for all your great, informative videos.
Could I just use soap and water for the prewash?
I use Synthrapol Soap as it does not have any additives in it that might interfere with the dyeing process... some people use Blue Dawn Dish soap ... the main thing is to remove any treatments added at the factory that might interfere with the dyeing process ... so a mild soap should be fine

Is that just water & soap in the basin?
if you are meaning at the end for the washing of the shoes... then yes, just water and a bit of Synthrapol soap ✌️ ...
Next, after I have applied the dye, I let them it for a few minutes and then I will go back and touch up any spots that look faded by adding a little extra dye... with converse being made from canvas, the dye can soak into the thicker fabric and the outer surface can then look faded
Then I batch mine in tub with a lid so they stay damp while batching, if they dry out, then the dye bonding stops... also, I will toss a couple wet rags in the bin just to help keep the humidity up.
and I batch mine for 24-48 hours before I do the rinsing and washing.
Thank you
Also do I use synthrapol every time I change the water? Thank you
I tried this on a pair of slip on vans with the intention of doing a spiral effect.
I wish you success, sorry I cannot be of more help
BUT, on your net pair of shoes, if you want to get a spiral design, you can thicken the dyes some and paint it on, I soak my shoes in soda ash, spin out the excess and then I let them dry completely and then I mix up thick water and mix in some dyes and then paint it on
Did you say you soaked them in soda ash again after rinsing the dye? Or is that soap? Thanks I just couldn't tell if you said soda ash or something else.
After the rinsing, I add a little bit of Synthrapol soap to help wash and remove the rest of the un-bonded dyes ... Blue Dawn Dish soap can also be used as it to is a pH neutral soap ✌️

Wonderful! and thank you
Hi what is soda ash please.in northern Ireland and never heard of it
Soda ash, also know as Sodium Carbonate, is the chemical that raises the pH level of the cotton fibers and then the dye reacts and bond with them... so, when using Procion Dyes, soda ash is needed to set the dyes ....
you can buy it where you buy your dyes from ... I try to collect links from other dyers around the world, here is one I have for the UK : www.georgeweil.com/dyes-and-assistants/procion-mx-dyes/
also, I buy mine from a local Pool Supply Store as it is a chemical also used in pools and hot tubs .... you can find product like pH Up, or Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, just check the labels .... also, if you still cannot find it, you can heat Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) in the oven and turn it into soda ash... here is my video on soda ash where I demo this : th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much
What was use in the water to soak the shoes
I started with a little bit of Synthrapol Soap to remove anything that may have been applied by the manufacturer ... then I rinsed then, next I soaked them in Soda Ash solution... this is what activates the Procion Dyes tat I use
Normally if you keep the water temperature below 30 degrees Celsius there shouldn’t be a problem with the glue giving way, at least that’s the case for the sole. I’m not sure if that’s true for the label on the insole as well.
yeah I have tried cooler temps, but to get a good pre wash and then to remove the excess dyes, the water need to be warmer ... Thanks for your input!!
@@MrTieDye alright then! 🙂
What happens when purple and yellow mix?
purple and yellow make brown and so does purple and orange ;)
Do you do anything to the label on the tongue or does it just not soak up the dye?
nope... it does not hold the dye, so it just washes out .... now and then there is some slight staining for some reason, but the label is plenty readable
This a great video! Thank you so much! Where do I get soda ash?
Sorry what did you use to soak the shoes in first before the soda ash?
I washed them in warm water with Synthrapol soap ... and apparently as of the date I am answering this question, they do not have it in stock, but here is an alternative soap if you want to go that route : www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/dharma-professional-textile-detergent.html
it is a mild, pH neutral soap that I use also to do my wash out with tie-dye .... a lot of dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap instead as it to is pH neutral.
How did you do stained glass? Is black outline sharpie? Thanks!
I used thickened dye to paint the black lines on and then I used thickened dye in rainbow colors to to do the spaces.... BUT, you could use sharpies and do something similar ;)
Here is how I made the thick water to make the thick dye from : th-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/w-d-xo.html
BUT< now I have been using Superclear as my thick liquid as it comes pre mixed : www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/superclear.html
@@MrTieDye thanks so much!
How can i spin these as the uk washer spits water all the time can i place these on a radeator ? X
the washer needs to spin out at the end of the rinse cycle so you can put damp clothes into the dryer... I set my washer to that point in the cycle ... I know some washer do not allow for this though 😉✌🏻
BUT, yes, if you cannot spin out, then letting them air dry works perfect and the radiator will speed the process
