S1 - Ep 167 - Jansenville - A Town with a Rich History Situated on the Sundays River!

  • The road we had to take from Waterford to Huis se Berg, our overnight accommodation outside Jansenville, was a very interesting one. One of the roughest ones yet, but stunningly beautiful at the same time. Our small vehicle dealt with it very well. Huis se Berg is on the farm Vogelfontein. The isolation there was just what the doctor ordered. Peaceful, quiet and totally relaxed. We had to get an early start the next morning, so we hit the road to Jansenville. What a surprise, this town has a rich history and is situated on the Sundays River. It was clean and tidy and has beautiful buildings, not to mention the amazing fort on the hill just above the town. We drove past the church but was unable to get into the grounds. We could see though that it was maintained in a very good condition. After our car picnic we went to the museum and then unfortunately had to get back on the road. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #jansenville #sundaysriver #huisseberg #waterford #vogelfontein

    The old orange double storey building which now houses the municipal was the Masonic Hotel. We lived there from 1955 until it was sold in 1975. Went to English medium school in Graaff Reinet and come home for weekends. Many stories to be told - it was similar to what it would have been like in the times of the American West. On one occasion a German tourist came to book in. It was a Friday evening. Unbeknown to him there was a bar fight taking place. As he entered a chair came flying across the room. He was heard to exclaim " Mein Gott, voors than the Vild Vest. On another occasion a "traveller", agents selling merchandise for bigger enterprises from the cities was heard to complain to my Dad, the owner, about the lack of hot water and the mosquitoes he had to endure all night. My Dad's answer is legendary as it has been retold in the Karoo many times. In his Irish way he replied " think how the blarnney has blessed you. You leave today. I have to live here"

      Wow, how interesting that you had to go to school in Graaff-Reinett because (we assume) there was only an Afrikaans school in Jansenville. So Jansenville and more specifically the Masonic Hotel was your playground over weekends and holidays, that sounds like great fun! 😁 We can only imagine the stories you can tell after living in a hotel for 20 years, you should write a book! Had a good chuckle at the stories of the German tourist and the 'traveller', thank you for sharing those! 👌🏻

      Oom Piet Gouws used to stay in the Masonic Hotel and he had a sheep that used to eat all the cigarette stubs in the bar.

    This took me home, nyc thing about little towns is that everyone is close nit and everyone knows everyone. I was born and bread in Jansenville. Completed my high school at the one you guys drove past( there is two other schools in the town not seen in this video) and moved to PE for varsity. My parents, older brother and younger sister still stay and work there. From the Fort I was able to see our home😅. I work and stay in Qatar now and in my lunch break scrolling through TH-cam boom a video of my home town. Awesome guys I love it even if it shows just one side of the town❤🙏❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for your comment. 👍

      There was a lot to see and experience in Jansenville and the surrounding area. We loved our farmhouse, so big and comfortable. 🤩 That manual exchange in the museum was awesome to see and you should definitely make a stop there. Operators like your mom had to have kept their wits about them to make sure they connect everyone properly, looks very complicated to me! 📞 You must be counting down the days until you leave for your trip, that's super exciting!

    I lived in Jansenville from 1961 to 1964.
    In 1961 the Sundays River flooded.
    My father was the minister at the Methodist Church you briefly showed at 21:07.
    Sid Fourie issued my mother her drivers licence!
    Good that you showed the NG Kerk and the school where I started school.
    The Hobson clan (including Dennis Hobson - famous spin bowler) are all from the area.
    By the way, the cacti at 16:28 is called noors.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's so fantastic to hear from someone who knows the area well. Thank you for the most interesting info you shared. We absolutely loved the noors, we thought it such an interesting-looking plant. They just started appearing on the side of the road and we had no idea what they were at the time! 🌵 The churches in town are awesome and we loved looking at the architecture. ⛪ Sid Fourie certainly sounded like a very influential figure in the town, how cool that he issued your mom's licence! I love his car too! 🚙😁

    @esthergreig739 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That looks like a great place to visit - you did the place proud. The locals are a real credit to their town, so neat and tidy. But a real shame some people can't bear the restoration of historical monuments - I suppose they have nothing better to do, or resent the symbolism of what the fort stands for. Pathetic really. The Aloe with candelabra was an aloe ferox (commonly also called a Cape Aloe or bitter Aloe), so named because of the bright red flowers. I would not have known this, but I went on a Cape trip with a cousin, who was obsessed with finding and photographing aloes - so that she could paint them; so I learned a lot about aloes that trip.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, we enjoyed our visit to the town. 😊 We were also saddened to see the state of the fort. We were expecting to see it restored, but clearly that didn't last. The townsfolk do work hard though to keep their town neat and tidy and we noticed that from the moment we drove into town. So good to see. Thank you for the info on the aloe, we've learnt something new. 👌🏻🌵
