As always another real tips video from a goalie in the trenches. I think I have commented on my game changer for me at almost 64 now. The Bauer konekt’s, so easy to put on, super comfortable as I play 3-4 times a week for 1.5 hours each game non stop time and no aches/pains. There were 2 pains, one being the fitting process and the other pain was is in the wallet. Yes they will out live me and if I pass them on, the recipient will have to pay the capital gains tax as they are expensive.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about the konekts! I actually had the intention of getting them but I was steered away from it because of how wide my foot is (several pro shop guys told me the konekts wouldn’t help my foot pain)
Very timely for me as I've been having so much foot pain this year and was wondering what to do about it. Thanks so much for posting this! I have the Superfeet and that helped when I first bought my skates but this season is really bad. I will try some of the lacing techniques and hopefully it improves. Thanks again!!
As a Canadian I'm a rare breed as I never really got into hockey until I was in my 30s (and I never watched it) as my family was more into downhill skiing (we did it every chance we got; so I learned how to skate on skis before skates). But my parents bought a used pair of skates for me on those whole day school trips to the arena and my feet constantly ached (this is going back to the 70s now before on this new tech). The constant foot pain is what put me off from hockey completely. Now, they custom fit your boot with heat (something I didn't experience until in mid 30s) something that I find helps tremendously. And then the increase in tech I think just makes for a much more enjoyable time on the ice. In fact, due to the changes, I now play more hockey than I go downhill skiing. (I haven't done the latter in over 20 years but I now play hockey 7-10 times a week, and I'll well into my 50s.)
Happy New Year's Kam, I use the hole skip method for the 2 and 4th holes and on the top 2 holes I I laced through the loop as you showed. I still have foot pain, sooooo I bought Konekt skates on sale. I looked at the true just couldn't bring myself to spend the money. Looks like new pads in the background. Your really going down the rabbit hole of looking for the right gear, I've come out the other end and am in a good place. look forward to a new gear video.
I really wanted to give the konekts a try but was recommended true instead after I described my pain And yes, this winter I went down a deep deep rabbit hole of gear … what your seeing isn’t even all the stuff I tried lol
Superfeet was a game changer for me. I’m a new (over 40) goalie since the summer. I actually found the Bauer GSX to be more comfortable than the Elites when trying them on when combined with the Superfeet. Rarely do I ever feel any pain when playing. I treated myself to the titanium blades/runners as the steel that came with the GSX wore way too easily. The cheapest skate with the most expensive steel about sums up my style 😂
Awesome tips my friend! I actually used one of the mentioned hacks on my old bauer one.7's because after 8 years if use, I was getting lace bite. Not fun lol. After buying gel pads for tung, that solved the my problem. When do you play next? We need to play one day man, shoot a video go over our gear! Tons of ice in the Surrey area..Bro..I am planning on registering on Jan.6th in Port Moody for 11am..if you are free it would be cool to see you there...Or in Surrey area..fun fast skates
Yeah that would be awesome to collab ! I’m already booked 3-4x ice times a week but will have more time come spring! Maybe we can organize something around that time would be cool to see some of your mask painting !
I don't know why I never thought of skipping eyelets before but that's a great idea. I get pain in the exact place you have yours skipped and I just started lacing them loser in that spot but obviously my whole skate would get loose by the end of the skate
I had bought elite skates in june every skate was very painful. I wore double socks in order to relieve some pain (it kinda worked). I've also had enough and bought true 2 pieces and today it's gonna be my first skate in them
That’s interesting I wonder if it’s just the elite model that isn’t great for specific foot types. Hope you like your true skates ! Best investment ever
Any suggestion for Toe Box pain? My feet are so wide that the hard plastic toe box on my missions are killing me - do custom skates solve toebox issues?
So my foot pain was in the toe box too, feet too wide. Guys at the store said I was screwed and suggested custom skates. From what I know toe box sizes can vary from brand to brand so you could try a bunch of different skates to see what works. But I find what works in store isn’t the same as 3 months down the line. With my new custom skates I have no toe box issues anymore. There is just enough wiggle room in there vs where my old skates it was completely squishing my toes together. Hope you find a solution!
If you have pretty f....d up feet than going full custom is the only way to go. I used to skate in retail Bauer Supreme for most of my life. My proper skate size after a Bauer Lab foot scan is left 6, right 5.75. My last retail skate has been a Supreme totalOne in size 7.5 EE. In order to get rid of the negative space I used neopren 3mm ankle booties along with gel pads. You can get the ankle booties with 1mm, 2mm and 3 mm. The 2mm booties are being used when you have got well fitting skates but you want to boost the comfort. 1mm booties are being used by speedskaters in order to prevent the feet to get blisters. If you want to get ride of pain or discomfort around the ankle bones you can place gel pads into your socks in order to have a better pressure distribution in the skate. My current skate is a vapor hyperlight 2 pro custom, size 6 and 5,75, both with 7.5 toecap. I just wear a thin pair of skate socks, no pain at all.
Obviously it depends on your foot, but I love how newer skates can be baked to form around your foot better. I re-baked a used pair of Konekt skates and they are super comfortable after getting baked. Those True skates look amazing! besides the lack of pain, do you find any performance gains with a custom skate like that?
I think the most noticeable difference is I feel like I am finally using proper parts of my foot to put pressure on pushes and stops. Because it’s so form fitted there’s really no wasted energy. The first time I took them on the ice I was able to do some movements I couldn’t even get close to using the old pair of skates (hard t push stops, backwards c cut) when I shuffled with my old skates my foot would completely die out after three or so , with the new boot I can shuffle a bunch of times and not feel tired Other than that , the one piece has a very neutral pitch to them and 4mm steel which for me helps with my balance , as the old skates felt like I was on stilts , I always felt like I was gonna fall on my face
Oh, that's cool that it has the thicker blade. That was the biggest hurdle when I switched to the Konekts from a super old pair of goalie skates. I didn't even know the blade got thinner, lol.
Yeah I had that same problem when going to the elites. I really tried my best to adjust to the thinner steel but the 4mm just feels better for me. In some of my older skating videos you see me completely blowing out and edge and falling on my ass - that completely disappeared with the new skates
My GSX are bad for temp foot pain under my arches which goes away in 10 mins or so. No other issues, but I have to keep my laces very loose toe to mid and I only tighten for heel lock. Probably need custom skates though. I also use super thin dress socks and always use them when I skate. So any thicker socks will cause pain on the sides. My feet are pretty much maxing the width of the boot without tying anything. I use this method for tying my skate: th-cam.com/video/wNpgzZI0nKk/w-d-xo.html I don't like the heel lock at the top there as it limits forward flex. Another tip, just use sock tape to secure laces from untying.
@@ovr40goalie Been doing this every since my first mishap during a league game. Was brutal! I was stuck playing deep and not moving for most of the 1st period before I could fix the issue. No time outs.
Playing Roller Derby, it really blows my mind how many people will put up with pain from skates and ill-fitting gear, then focus on stuff that doesn't matter at all. You don't wear shoes that hurt, do you? Why would you think that's normal?
Sums me up completely lol it’s too bad because the skates I originally purchased were the most comfortable when I tried on in store, but after wearing it on ice completely different story
@@ovr40goalie that works with custom build skates. For example Bauer pro custom, you can have a mixed size pair of skates. Left 5,75 right 6,5. You have a very wide foot that need a wide toe cap, no problem at all. Bauer will add let say a 7.5 toe cap to your 5,75 and 6.5 boots. For best fit and comfort get True Cusum SVH skates. Bauer pro custom fit is very good but True us the benchmark. Lots of pro goalie are in True skates.
My feet hurt so much all the time. Thanks for posting this!!

I think that's the one issue with the konekts is they don't have a wide boot and they don't do half sizes.
Ah yeah that’s what they mentioned since I’m a 7.5 extra wide
Love the nes Punch-Out reference!! Great game! came out in 87. Goddam, we're old....
Hah one of the first games I ever played as a kid
Look at those sharp new pads!!!!

How much did the True custom route set you back?
After taxes a bit over $1600 Canadian , steep for sure but in hindsight I should have done this earlier and cheaped out on everything else

You need to get half size bigger no matter what they say
