gema optiflex. got 3 or 4 of those at my place a few years back. Not a big fan of them, i found their controls a little limiting compared to the rack mounts. And that self cleaning thing is nearly useless because it leaves paint caught inside the pump, under the tip, and around the 1 way reed valve at the pickup tube. You still need to disassemble and blow it all out when making high contrasting color changes.
Awesome job Tim. I just ordered the Brother ScanNCut 2 vinyl cutter. I am going to give this a shot. How long does it take for the paint to start to liquify at 400 degrees? Thanks for posting this video!
What type of viny materiall are you using. My biggest problem is vinyl decal glue parially staying on the cups. Only two minutes in the oven for flowout, wait till 150 deg. Ugh, some pulls off nicely and some does not.
Great video. I have a question. I am new to the powder coating process and I was putting a second coat on a yeti cup and got shocked while spraying. Was this because of an improper ground?
hey scott it differently sounds like a grounding issue. you should not get shocked at all. make sure your part is grounded well and also make sure your gun is grounded.
I read that getting shocked could also mean you yourself aren’t making proper contact with the gun......not sure if that’s correct but they recommend not using gloves when coating. Not sure if I helped lol
DIY powder coater up in Wilkes barre,PA here! quick question for you, how come you constantly are on/off the trigger? i thought that could build up to much on the part versus leaving the trigger pulled on the gun?
Holding the trigger on is awesome on large rounded parts where it won't matter is it wraps. I always try to control powder on edges. Easy to get build up.
Hey Tim, My name is James, I was wondering if I could ask you a question on powder coating tumblers. I'm doing a two color process but I'm really having a hard time removing the vinyl with out getting messed up lines or paint chipping. How long should I let the second coat cure for before removing from the oven and how long do I let it cool before removing the vinyl. Please HELP!!!! It's very frustrating making mistakes and starting over. Thank You !! JAMES
I typically pull the cups just after flow. The least amount of time the vintlis in the oven the better. Than wait till the cups have cooled to about 150 before starting to pull the vinyl. If you let them cool to much the powder can chip. But if it's to hot it can also effect the powder. I found 150 degrees is the magic temp. Let me know how it comes out.
I've thought about doing something like this. I've never powder coated before how durable is it? And does copyright restrictions to doing custom orders for people?
Justin Reichenbach it shouldn't matter what vinyl you use. I use orical . The key is to only keep the cup in for a min just to get the powder to flow. Than wait till it cools to about 150° .if it's to hot it will leave the glue behind. If it's to cool the vinyl will be hard to pull.
@@timoliverfmxxx thanks, i was reading in random forums, and people suggested using a low-cure clear coat if you are trying to leave the decals on permanently under the coat. I'm still not sure if there's a particular decal type that is best but will leave a comment here if I read anything
these cups were for a harley shop owner. we made them as a gift for them. we did not sell them or make a profit so we are not to worried about any legal issues.
Jeffrey Mullins the key is pulling the vinyl off at about 150° if the cup is still hot it will leave glue behind. Also only leave I long enough to flash the powder.
randy shumaker we make them. We have a vinyl cutter. You can go to any place that makes stickers and t shirts. Most malls have a store that make customers stickers and shirts.
I'm still newer to this. I've always scuffed the cups with sand paper or even sand blasted them first. Is it not necessary to rough them up before coating them?
no it is not necessary to blast them or rough them up you get a great adhesion with them being cleaned well. now if your powdercoating over more powder that has been fully cured you would need to rough up the surface. i dont fully cure the base coat.
Hi Tim, great video, you did a good job on these cups. Can I ask what type of vinyl you use for the masking, is it HIGH TEMP vinyl? Thanks
I like the Orange one with black lettering it reminds me of a FRAM oil filter :)
Awesome video!!! Great Christmas gift...... you should let your son know that his momma would love one of those!
Go big red! Great looking cup!
Nice job, I do hundreds of these a year, very popular
holy shit tim. i didnt even kbow you had a channel and you came up as recomended
That's a lot of work, wow! Beautiful job!
Quick question, where do you get that vinyl cut outs from ? There is a big event coming g up here and I want to make custom mugs ...
What temp are you having your oven at when you put the cups in with the decal on them?
i always keep the oven at 400* i just keep the cups in long enough to get the powder to flow.
Do you think you could two tone it and use a laser to expose the first coat instead of using vinyl?
gema optiflex. got 3 or 4 of those at my place a few years back. Not a big fan of them, i found their controls a little limiting compared to the rack mounts. littlegoobie your right about that. I take that thing apart 10 times a day.
I use Wagner Sprint X guns , great versatility and user friendly !
How long did you do the first coat for
Do you ever clear coat (powder) to give the cup a smooth finish, basically filling in the troughs left by the vinyl stickers?
Norbert Davis yes I do clear coat cups if needed. I try to limit the layers as much as I can. If the customer wants it cleared I do.
Awesome job Tim. I just ordered the Brother ScanNCut 2 vinyl cutter. I am going to give this a shot. How long does it take for the paint to start to liquify at 400 degrees? Thanks for posting this video!
Under 2 min. Make sure to wait for the cup to cool to 160 or a little under. If you pull to hot it will leave the glue behind.
Hi, do you print your own stickers or do you have your own vinyl sticker cutter machine?
What type of viny materiall are you using. My biggest problem is vinyl decal glue parially staying on the cups. Only two minutes in the oven for flowout, wait till 150 deg. Ugh, some pulls off nicely and some does not.
Sounds like the cup is still to hot. Try waiting a bit longer before pulling it off. Also leave cup in oven just long enough for it to flash.
how did you make the holder?
Great video. I have a question. I am new to the powder coating process and I was putting a second coat on a yeti cup and got shocked while spraying. Was this because of an improper ground?

Scott Finley yes and u dont do a second coat the first coat works so good because the powder sticks with static electrisity
DIY powder coater up in Wilkes barre,PA here! quick question for you, how come you constantly are on/off the trigger? i thought that could build up to much on the part versus leaving the trigger pulled on the gun?
On certain parts it's easer froe me to control my mill thickness.
Holding the trigger on is awesome on large rounded parts where it won't matter is it wraps. I always try to control powder on edges. Easy to get build up.

I'm looking to get an Intermediate powder coating machine, which would you recommend?
Could you just powdercoat where you know the vinyl will be or do you have to do the whole cup?
ya you can just do where you know the vinyl will be.
I've thought about doing something like this. I've never powder coated before how durable is it? And does copyright restrictions to doing custom orders for people?
powder coating is very durable. and yes i have to be careful with what i do and post because of copyrights.
Im not sure if this was asked yet but are you using indoor or outdoor vinyl? Brand? If outdoor how do you not get glue residue on base coat?
Justin Reichenbach it shouldn't matter what vinyl you use. I use orical . The key is to only keep the cup in for a min just to get the powder to flow. Than wait till it cools to about 150° .if it's to hot it will leave the glue behind. If it's to cool the vinyl will be hard to pull.
tim oliver Thank You
What kind of powder coater is that.
is it possible to leave the decals on and do a clear coat over them? what kind of decals would you need to use?
Yes that is possible. I have had them come out great but I have also had them turn yellow or black from the heat.

Low core clear is definitely the way to go.
What model of Wagner gun do you have? Great video!
I use a gema optiflex 2. Best gun I have found.
@@timoliverfmxxx Whats a good site to buy the gema optiflex 2? I went to their site but doesn't appear to be a good place to buy it.
did you use a special vinyl?

tim oliver He reads further and finds the answer. Thank you.
I see a prismatic powders box :)
Question what kind of sticker can use have to be a hi temperatures stickers or a regular one?
We use just a regular orical vynal.
tim oliver ok thanks appreciate
looks awesome where do you get the stickers, or how do you have them
We have a small vinyl cutter so we just make our own stickers.
@@timoliverfmxxx what vinly would I look for? high heat adhesive backing vinyl?
Where do you get your stickers made? Do you have a graphic designer?
Dan Cummings we have a vinyl cutter. I don't know of much about it. I just tell my boss what I want and I get it.
Did you do a full cure on the base coat?
No not 100% full. I do atleast 10 min. Wait till completely cool to add vinyl.
how mutch dos it cost to do the black one?
Linus Klein around 45$ a cup.
can you by a yeti cup or should I send one? if it coms to that?
Linus Klein if you could ship the cup to us that would be good. And we would just ad the price of shipping it back.
tim oliver ok thanks, i Will lett you know.
on your 1st coat... how long did you leave it in curing before removing to apply the vinyl?
pro design I did a full 20 min. I didn't want to take a change of having any problem removing the decal if the base was not cured enough.
Where do u get the stickers
So have you got a c&d letter from hd yet?
these cups were for a harley shop owner. we made them as a gift for them. we did not sell them or make a profit so we are not to worried about any legal issues.
how did you remove the glue left behind from the vinyl?
Jeffrey Mullins there is no glue left behind.
what kind of vinyl do you use? everything I powder coat one of these cups there is glue left behind.
Jeffrey Mullins the key is pulling the vinyl off at about 150° if the cup is still hot it will leave glue behind. Also only leave I long enough to flash the powder.
thanks
Use # 651 vinyl and it leaves no residue
What is the brand of gun you use?
Gema optiflex pro
Is there a number to reach you at? I call the comany and they said there was no one tre by your name lol
Do you sell the stands that the cup rest on?

where do you get the vinyl decals
randy shumaker we make them. We have a vinyl cutter. You can go to any place that makes stickers and t shirts. Most malls have a store that make customers stickers and shirts.
tim oliver I think you answered my question. The vinyl decal is nothing heat proof?
Do you have a machine to do the vinyl sicker or do you order them? I want to do this!
yes we have a small vinyal cutter .we do our own stickers. you can find them on line for a couple hundred bucks.
Powder coating safe to be drinking out of
I dont powder the inside. Just the outside.
how much ya charge for one?
hobo1958 depends on color and logo. Names and things like that are no problem but registered trademarks I have to be careful with.
That font used, it should be burned for ever
Throw it in the trash!

no it is not necessary to blast them or rough them up you get a great adhesion with them being cleaned well. now if your powdercoating over more powder that has been fully cured you would need to rough up the surface. i dont fully cure the base coat.
tim oliver thanks for the advice. Should save me some time!
sometimes scuffing it up gives you less adhesion becasue you end up with air pockets under the finish. Not all powders flow out as nicely.
how long do you leave the base coat in the oven? get it to 400 deg then pull it out to cool?
