I've always thought so. This clearly manifests when two competitors sing a duo; the key suits one of them, and just kills the other, and the judgement often is often unfair.

You singing the song in lowered key sounds like you can express better the feeling you wanna pass

Singing while washing dishes or doing anything else that allows to sing, is a good thing to do. When singing without instruments, but acapella, just the voice, if a comfortable key is found, recording it through the cell phone for then measuring its key on the instrument... is the key. Musicians that have the study to play in any key can help on this.

Yes it's a bit like a Pride sort of thing where you don't want to have to lower the key right .? But there's some songs for me they're definitely just putting them down even just 2 or 3 semitones seems to make a lot of difference. I was doing Don't Pay the Ferryman in the original key and when he gets up in the Corus it was just a strain , I wasn't quite getting it and when I just lowered it a little bit and that'll just came out ok I think lol

you told me in one of ur live streams that artists who sing their own songs first decide the key in which they sound the best...before composing a song....and i am so thankful for this video....after all my singing life..i used to think that i have a very thin voice...cuz i always sang along chester of linkin park....just somehow making up to those crazy high notes....but now that i have some sense inside me...i realised that i never actually explored my lower register....and now i realise that i dont have a thin voice...i just used to sing in those high register all the time...thank u so much freya for this video...really appreciate it...love from your indian classical fan :)))))

I just go an octave lower if its to high.

You could, but if you do, you can lose some of the mood or emotion that can be expressed through hitting the high end of your vocal range. I also hate changing the original key, but if I were to want to sing it expressively, I may need to change the key.

What about classical music? I have no qualms about changing the key of popular music-- that was written with a specific singer and their specific voice/vocal range in mind, so of course it's no big deal if someone else changes it. However, classical music wasn't written for the voice of a certain person, and it's usually "not done" very often to change the key of a piece-- if a piece is outside of someone's range or ideal range, they simply choose to sing something else (even if it would be possible to transpose without too much trouble-- say, changing the key of a recorded backing track, or having a pianist transpose, and it's just a single piece you're singing rather than an entire opera or oratorio). How big of a "no-no" is it considered in the classical-music world to change a key to somewhere more comfortable for a singer?

Good advice as always from Freya but with karaoke backing tracks are usually in the original key. It's difficult to sing 3rd/5th lower and maintain it throughout the whole song. Most song's it is only usually one difficult section so I just sing that part lower and make it sound like it is a 'style' thing I'm doing.

When you hear ac/dc or guns n Rose's singers speak, they have low voices, but sing in extremely high raspy tones. They sound good either way, but a little rough on the voice.

I mean freddy mercury always sang the original key of his songs which some of them went insanely high, Im talking soprano notes!
Then again...im not freddy mercury so i guess ill just stick to a lower key.

@@VIDEOHEREBOB You do know Roger lost his vocal range in 1978? Right, he couldn't hit anymore falsetto or head voice notes, all the high notes live where done by Freddie. Listen to Bohrap and some body to love from Newcastle 1979 Freddie arguably hits far more higher notes than the studio.

My choir teacher asked all of us to sing in the same key but the original song was sung by a male.. I'm an alto & my voice can be pretty low.. but I just can't hit the right key.. I was in pitch though.. my teacher insisted us girls to "be in the right key" but I was wondering how??? The original singer was singing it way to low for us, yet you still want us to sing un the right key?? 😭😔 I feel like singing in the right key is not really important but if you want to sing as close to the original singer then go ahead

I think you're wrong. at least in some cases. Depending on the type of music and style you sing. Singing mostly tenor range metal with belted chest and mixed voice i have found that, while it was much hard work to learn the techniques, i have been able to train myself to take on most songs in their original keys. I can even sing some female songs comfortably in original key, using those mixed voice techniques. What i probably couldnt do is sing like really low bass with little effort. Tuning down a half step for example can be devestating for me even if some notes are hard to do. Sometimes you just need good technique, take good care of your body and you can do a lot. Thought i was a baritone before i trained my voice. I am not, i'm a tenor.
But sure, if you're an untrained singer or havent trained your voice to control a very wide range, you might benefit from changing the key a lot. But many times i think its just the skill that is lacking, when it could be possible with enough training.

    • @supercalifragilisticex
      @supercalifragilisticex ปีที่แล้ว

same, as a baritone, with enough training i know i can sing halo by beyonce but sadly there's no chance i would be able to sing it with c2 being the lowest note instead of c3. E2 is hard enough 😭😭😭

I always feel so discouraged when I sing because I feel like my belting range is like 3 notes. So when I sing any song like, Billie Eilish, Ariana grande, any Disney song, Wicked songs, they’re all so high for me and I feel like garbage because of it. I can’t belt any song all the way through because my vocal range is so limited. Idk 😔

Freya I have a question I have been practicing my voice everyday and I've stitched together a series of exercises I feel will help me improve the fastest.Do you mind checking my routine and tell me if I'm missing anything...
So I start out my training with a vocal function exercises - th-cam.com/video/1rzZupWzYes/w-d-xo.html After that I transition into scales I work on scales for about ten to twenty minutes before I move onto faster vocal agility exercises that also sometimes involve scales I try to have no tension at all in my neck and shoulders focusing on breathing into the belly through my nose every time. I also try to keep my larynx in it's neutral position. After this I do various warmups to improve my resonance before trying some belting exercises. Than after all that I do diaphragmatic breathing exercises were I am told to breath low into my pelvis expanding my back and my stomach and to open up my ribcage to get a full expanded breath... then I practice breath control and sustaining notes, I need to reach one minute I can get to about 30 seconds on a sustained note at my current level. After all this I call it a day
