- In the 1960s and early 1970s, Salisbury, Wiltshire, saw a great deal of change with the construction of new roads, buildings and housing estates to accommodate the growing needs of the expanding city.
In particular, the inner ring road, known as Churchill Way, built during the late 1960s, was designed to improve traffic flow and ease congestion. Several other major roads and junctions were created or improved around the same time.
Salisbury also saw the development of new retail centres, specifically The Maltings, and The Old George Mall, along with several new housing estates to meet the demands of the city's rapidly increasing population.
The sequences seen here, filmed by members of Salisbury Cine Club, are from a much longer film which set out to record the changes taking place. The film is a superb example of why capturing the process of change is so important. Once new streets are filled with traffic, and the housing estates and shopping centres have become familiar landmarks, it's easy to forget was sacrificed in the name of progress.
