  • @ln5321
    @ln5321 ปีที่แล้ว +161

    If you take the lyrics from the video description and paste them into Google translate (which, surprisingly, has Latin), you'll see that these lyrics seem to be pretty well done, as they are not a simple literal translation of Little Dark Age as the subtitles in this video would have you believe. They're actually reworked to fit into Latin and still maintain the overall meaning. There are some great lines in there:
    "Sensus putrefiunt, dum vita transit" is "the feelings start to rot, one wink at a time" according to the subtitles. But it seems that it actually means "the feelings rot as life passes by," which I think sounds even better.
    "Motores deficiunt denuo, simulatio habet fines" is "the engine's failed again, all limits of disguise" based on the subtitles, but a direct translation comes out as "the engine failed again, simulation has its limits" which, again, sounds really nice.
    An excellent job was done on not merely translating the lyrics, but re-interpreting them, and I think it's a shame that the video's subtitles are just the original Little Dark Age lyrics because it masks a lot of that work that was done.

    • @lorenzo8208
      @lorenzo8208 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      To give a more "human" translation:
      -"sensus putrefiunt, dum vita transit" is "the senses start to rot, as life passes"
      - "motores deficiunt denuo, simulatio habet fines" is "the engines failed again (like "twice", "a second time", word is "denuo"), the simulation has its limits".
      Obviously there are more examples, like "clades diei mihi cicatrices videntur" is "the ruins of the day seem like scars to me". They did a pretty good job

    It sounds good, but for future reference, long and short vowels are very important in Classical Latin. A lot of Classical speakers exaggerate them much too much, but you ignored them completely, which isn't good either.
    For example, it's parvā ātrā aetās, and all the vowels with bars over them should be held a little longer. You pronounced them like párva átra áetas. Using stress rather than length is ok, it's what happened in Ecclesiastic Latin, but the stress was misplaced. This happened quite often. As a general rule, Classical Latin 'stresses' (actually lengthens) the last syllable (obviously it's way more complicated than that, but luckily wiktionary will tell you exactly where the long vowels are), whereas you normally stress the first syllable.
    As I said, it sounds good regardless, it's just something to bear in mind in future
