Hachi stated in an interview that he originally did not intend to have any complex interpretation of the song. People just picked it up and blew it up into a gigantic story, and he enjoys those interpretations.
This song is full of hideous metaphors. For example,"rai rai" is hayashikotoba(meaningless refrain used to maintain the rhythm of song),but Rai also meant Leprosy in the old days. For those of you about to fuss about the lyrics not being 'right', just remember, PDF2nd's translators dumbed down all the lyrics that had any sexual innuendos. In Suki Kirai they took the line where Rin calls Len a 'pervert' and changed it to 'weirdo'. There are many other instances, but that's just the easiest one to point out. to quote another comment: "Hachi stated in an interview that he originally did not intend to have any complex interpretation of the song. People just picked it up and blew it up into a gigantic story, and he enjoys those interpretations."
OK so I think this is about child prostitution. The three legged cat could possibly represent all of the 'customers' that Miku has to entertain *cough naked cough*. The 'flowers secretly blooming' is supposedly the pregnancies that the children had to undergo and were unwanted- when she mentions the skull expecting, I think its supposed to be a metaphor for an abortion- perhaps one she had to undergo. As in an abortion, the mothers would give birth to a dead child. The eyes on her hands could be associated with the Tenome- a monster originating from folklore where a blind man was unjustly killed. Then resurrected full of revenge and evil with eyes on its hands so it could seek out and devour the perpetrators. Miku also mentions a pine tree with a collar for swinging- possibly a noose. Therefore, Miku may have hung herself after being forced to have an abortion, and has returned as a vengeful spirit in order to enact revenge on those who wronged her. Or, as Rakshasa are evil creatures driven by pleasure and discontent, they are the the people that Miku and the prostitutes have to serve. Miku has seen the carcasses of many children who herself and her peers had to bear and probably then abandon or abort. She is envisioning herself as a vengeful spirit (Tenome) in order to deal with the horrific things she has to go through and is possibly plotting revenge against them. Sorry for that mind vomit I have spent too long studying ^__^
Ring of Roses OK. How about this explaination? First of all, let's start with the ending speak of the fox-masked men: The rakshasa drinking blood from the python. It could be a connection with the incident of the python dead near the gravestone. I assume that the Rakshasa represented a powerfull figure, who had done something awfull to climb up top.He has been killing one of his henchmen(python) because he wanted to turn-tail and surrendered himself to the gorvener. Because he was dead, he couldnt tell anything he had mentioned to the snake who claimed he had something to say to him. It may happened in a children day( the skull was expected in the belly of carp-streamer which is used in that day mostly). Because of that incident. the girl who was eye-witnessed the murder(may be she was also the daughter of the victim) was traumatized. The three-legged cat, the stupas may represent the minion of the rakshasa, who tried to make her mouth shut by tempting her(the word may not correct but i'm out of words to describe it) with "fun" and "candy". But she refuse. She turned unsocialized with the other. Even in the game of hana ichimonme( they translate it in to flower in sold :D ) she was the only one left, because no one pick her in their team. They harrashed her, "pranking" on her ( for being different i suppose, how "innocent" the kids are, otherwise it's the case of what is the deal of the other'misery). In her mind there is only thing that keeping haunting her: "You think that is none of your bussiness?" But she can not run away from it. The cat from tempting, turned to threatening. "Let's concieve a child". It's a rape threat. Resistance was made but none was effect. She can have only choice:"the belly (which was skulls inside) will empty tommorow. She choose silent for the safety of her own. Nothing she had seen. Nothing she would testify agaist. The silent of the withness is tragic because the murder roam free around. The public seem to be not supported her, which also contributed to her decision.
woo... when you understand the true meaning of the song, it's kinda traumatizing...even more when u know it's actually happening right now, at the moment, and everyday, somewhere in the world...
BloodRedWolfV3 im not sure myself :S , but if you want, you can you go check some of the comments and after relook at the video and read the subs for more infos and details. ^_^ it would seems that it's about prostitution and abuse on young girls. Some of them are under age and become pregnant by being raped. Plus, because there're too young to "make" a baby, what's await them is death, by giving birth... :S about what i said, that it's traumatizing, it's because at the right moment, such dirty things like that actually happens everydays. I know I can be wrong, but i truly believe it happens more often than we would think in the world... :( (sorry for my bad English...)

Guys, all in all, this song is by HACHI. (Panda Hero, Matryoshka, Lynn, Mrs.Pumpkin, etc), so that means not only is there such intricate meaning, but at the same time basically no reason to look for the meaning at all. There's so many ways it can be taken, whether Hachi said what it's about or not - his work ALWAYS has some sort of twists where it bends your mind.
I never realized that some of the designs in this music video are innuendos to designs found on Hanafuda Cards...interesting... Besides that, I still love Hachi’s songs. Each and every one of them are so interesting, and they’re all still catchy to this very day.
i love how this song has a wonderful mixture of a sense of mischif and allurement masking an underlying feel of something horrifying. the lyrics, the tone of the song, and even miku's charming voice with an eerie tune work perfectly, i guess i should expect this much for a theme involving a nekomata
am i the only one who loves the feel and tone of this version more than the ones used in concert/project diva? i just like the tone and sound that the traditional instruments give rather than the synth, and it also feels like they tried to reduce the creepiness of it which is a big reason i love this song so much n have for years now
Vocaloid, One side is happy, sweet and adorable, you will hear songs like triple Baka, world is mine, electric Angel This side is....... Death, demons, ghosts, yanderes and canibalism, you will hear songs like love love nightmare, song for great satan, ward room 305, fear garden and Alice human sacrifice
I think this might be about how at first, the world looks comepletely innocent and fair, but later on it reveals itself to be sometimes violent and cruel. Just my personal opinion here, feel free to have your own.
Just when you think Vocaloids couldn't get any weirder, they have a song about demons as whores... Neverthless, I love it. Such a creepy song and an interesting story. I didn't get the part about snakes, though, but most of it makes sense after reading comments.
i've heard lots of different interpretations of this song, and i like all of them: a story of a young girl who was taken (with others) and forced to be a prostitute; the pain from the loss of a child/abortion; a demon with the appearance of a woman who seduces and kills men; and so on. i wonder if the writer doesn't want to reveal the interpretation he or she saw when writing it, that way we can all see our own meaning? I think I'm starting to see the importance of interpretation...
The visuals are fairly creepy, but I was never really freaked out by this song, I just got hooked on it back in my vocaloid phase. I think it's pretty neat that there's no official interpretation and that there are many ways to see this song as you want!
I just LOVE how this song is creepy. Ideally for the your next Halloween party! The song itself is a perfection of how i personally imagine a Halloween Vocaloid song: creepy, a lot of symbols and double - meaning and insanely catchy. It may not contain blood, but it scares you a little bit at least. It prefects the all points.
A cat, who has lost a leg, is snickering this way: "The young lady over there, let's play!" The red string tied to its collar cannot possibly be used in place of its lost leg. Ya, ya, ya, ya, I, don't, wanna! A row of lined-up stupas are singing: "The young lady over there, let's dance!" The flowers sneakily blooming underfoot are grimacing and grumbling. The carp streamers are showing their bellies, inside which heaps of skulls are buried. Yai, yai, shall we go play? Yai, yai, smile, simle. Rai, rai, join up, open up. Rai, rai, the Rakshasa and the corpse. One, two, three, and again open up. Five, six, seven, and raise your hands up high. A collar tied to a pine tree, hanging and swinging, let's all join up together, everyone together! The lowly python dies at the foot of the gravestones. The assembled relatives of the dead have begun fighting. "I made a vow with him when he was still alive!" No matter what you claim, the dead will never talk. Ya, ya, ya, ya, I, hate, this. Please buy all these pretty flowers, one after another, buy away all these cute children. The unsold ones are the unrefined ugly ones; they are crying in a corner, unnoticed by anybody. Yai, yai, shall we play a prank? Yai, yai, dance, dance. Rai, rai, join up, open up. Rai, rai, the Rakshasa and the corpse. Three, two, one, and hold the breath. Seven, eight, ten, and again join up. Bearing burns not even blacksmiths can endure, the cat now goes to close the open sliding door. In the end, it's all other people's business. In the end, it's all other people's business. In the end, it's all other people's business. About others' misfortune, we'll just feign ignorance. Yai, yai, shall we conceive a child? Yai, yai, be lost, be lost, in this world. Rai, rai, captivated by the vanity of the world. Rai, rai, the Rakshasa and the corpse. One, two, three, and again open up. Five, six, seven, and raise your hands up high. Before the rooster can start crowing, my belly will be empty. One, two, three, see you tomorrow! One, two, three, see you tomorrow!
I honestly like this version of the song more than the one present in the project diva games. Not because of the lyrics (I can understand the change because it was either that or leave the song out and considering the popularity of this song that was out of the question), but because the more crunchy and dirty sound (if that makes any sense) fits the creepy tone and theme of the song
I made some lyrics! (Well, I tried anyways..) Late the other night, a cat with three legs smiled at me, “Hello mademoiselle, could you come and play with me?” The scarlet collar wrapped around his neck ever so tightly. Can not serve as his one missing leg, sadly. _Ya ya ya ya iya iya iya_ Late the other night, a rank of stupas sang in chorus, “Hello mademoiselle, could you come and dance with us?” Down on the ground wild flowers secretly flourish Frowning and whining with soft petals so lush On their backs, carp streamers flail in the wind. Skulls are expected to appear again. _Yai Yai_ Lets hack around while innocent. _Yai Yai_ Laughing loudly as you can. _Rai Rai_ Hold it in and then release it. _Rai Rai_ Rakshasa and carcasses. 1 and a 2 and a 3, Release it again softly. 5, 6, and 7 Put your hands up high. On the pine tree, a collar will keep swinging-ing. So let, let, let us hold them close and tight. Late the other day, by a grave, passed a giant python. His relatives nearby started to argue on and on. “He promised that he had something to tell me before he died." But dead men are very good at keeping all their lies. _Ya ya ya ya iya iya iya_ Late the other day, a group of girls had stood in a line. The guys with flowers bought the cute ones off, one at a time. In the very back was a filthy girl that had been left last She wept but no one gave any sympathy as they passed. _Yai Yai_ Let us go and make some mischief _Yai Yai_ Hop and dance around again _Rai Rai_ Hold it in and then release it _Rai Rai_ Rakshasa and carcasses 3 and a 2 and a 1 Kill off your breath quietly 7, 8, and 10 Hold them closely as you can Even the tallest towers could not prevent the scalding A cat softly closes the door behind him as he leaves You should know that all of it is none of your concern! (...) You should know that all of it is none of your concern! (...) You should know that all of it is none of your concern! (...) What’s the point in knowing how sad *all the others are*??!!!! _Yai Yai_ Let’s go have ourselves a baby _Yai Yai_ Mix it well, go up and down _Rai Rai_ A B C D E, Enchantment _Rai Rai_ Rakshasa and carcasses 1 and a 2 and a 3 Release it again softly 5, 6, and 7 Put your hands up high When the bird comes, it will cry out, “hera hera” 1 and a 2 and a 3 Tomorrow, I’ll see you again 1 and a 2 and a 3 Tomorrow, I’ll see you again
I was curious why the title of this song varies so often and now I'm wondering how this translator came to interpret it as "Hold, release." From my understanding it's more aptly translated "Tie, untie" (More literally "Tie" (as in fasten) and "Open" (as in unfurl). And carcasses should probably be corpse since it's referring to human remains specifically. But I still don't understand where "Hold, release" comes from nor why some translations have it as "Open, close" (I mean, I guess it's closer but it's very clearly implying a different meaning?)
kraetyz The concert version may have had a Shamisen or Shansin. I'm not sure. I saw one of the guys in the band at the concert playing Acoustic Guitar during this song so they could've tuned it or added different strings in such a way that makes it sound like a Koto
ive been looking into such legends and trying to find things like this in any kind of legends trying to trace it back to a semi well known character that is seen in videos recently tormenting a certain person.
This is probably my favorite youtube video. Just the combination of the song itself, with the artwork in this video and the way it was presented was beautifully twisted. I love this so much. Sometimes I stop singing or paying attention to the music just to stare at the artwork, and the converse. All I got left is...wow.
That is agreeable. Cause the younger voices can be pretty talented at providing a 'creepy' effect this video was going for. But since no one really tries with the older/deeper voices, no one really knows well which does better. And you are right, I still enjoy the song despite the fact.
For whoever doesn't knows, Miku in this song is meant to be a prostitute. And since there's a part where you can hear Len's voice answering her, I imagine that Len would be her boss...
2:50 - 3:14 used to scare me so friggin much as a kid. The chaotic instrumental, the creepy whispering vocals, that weird _thing’s_ face… and of course the jump scare at the end. This song fucked me up but I still loved it. Maybe I’ve just been under its curse all these years XD
OMFG, this scared me so much Piece of advice: Don't watch and listen to this while having headphones at full blast when its midnight and all the lights are turned off....
Out of all of the things in this video, why do i notice the fact that we are being enlightened by an anthropomorphic fox wearing a kimono (sorry if it isn't a kimono)? must say something about me.
The author, Hachi, when Miku was talking about babies, literally means the babies have skulls in their chest. Hati is a genius. edit: the kids, Hide, Run, & Escape, from Azakaku No Watashi ni Mirai (痣角の私に未来), had made a group named “Masukiretsu” (demons of short to tall) from, Hide to Escape.
I dunno, but the "one, two, three, see you again tomorrow" part of the song reminds me of the custom of having to meet an Oiran (Japanese courtesan) three times to get her services.
i don't know but i always get hooked to creepy songs... well the best way to watch this video is in a complete dark room with a loud volume at midnight. (replaying it again and again)
3:37 - You see at the end where it says "hara hera", that's essentially meaning "womb collapse". These only usually happen old women when the muscles and tissue holding it to the pelvis becomes weakened. However, with a previous line mentioning "let's make a baby" as if it wasn't her idea, and miku in the PV not looking over 60, what other reason is there for a uterine prolapse other than...
I do not know why. Despite the darkness of the lyrics in this song, i can not stop smiling while singing this in math class. And apparently my seat mate knows japanese and...... She starts to chant everytime i sing it
i think this music is giving something story i don't know why its so cruel and something terrifying about japans i just hear it up hehe Rakshasa meaning = The Terrifying Demonic Ogre Monster Carcasses = The Terrifying sex kill monster two of them just a very scare monster to woman but this song is absolutely tell something story about cruelly sexual that was do to woman in japan
Am I the only one who finds this song absolutely...delightful? Really, I LOVE it! I can't stop listening to it! It's addicting and hypnotizing, in addition to its sinister and creepy nature. :3 I suppose I'm just weird...oh well. X3 *hums*
It surprises me that there are still people watching this in 2015. But what surprises me more is that I first watched this 6 years ago. I mean, what the heck? It's been six years already???! How dafuq did that happen???! xD

"innuendos" imply that it's something inappropriate, I think these would just be "references"
i love how this song has a wonderful mixture of a sense of mischif and allurement masking an underlying feel of something horrifying. the lyrics, the tone of the song, and even miku's charming voice with an eerie tune work perfectly, i guess i should expect this much for a theme involving a nekomata
am i the only one who loves the feel and tone of this version more than the ones used in concert/project diva? i just like the tone and sound that the traditional instruments give rather than the synth, and it also feels like they tried to reduce the creepiness of it which is a big reason i love this song so much n have for years now
I love this music video the artstyle is just so crunchy

Vocaloid,
One side is happy, sweet and adorable, you will hear songs like triple Baka, world is mine, electric Angel
This side is.......

Why do I always like the "creepy" Vocaloid songs?
because your awesome to :3
I like them too. My friends say they're scary but I guess "creepy" songs don't creep me out enough to stop listening to them :/
My guess is that I've become so used to creepy stuff that it doesn't strike me as "creepy" anymore. XD
I understand you. :3
Michael Morgan because the creepy ones are catchy
Just when you think Vocaloids couldn't get any weirder, they have a song about demons as whores...
Neverthless, I love it. Such a creepy song and an interesting story. I didn't get the part about snakes, though, but most of it makes sense after reading comments.
i've heard lots of different interpretations of this song, and i like all of them:
a story of a young girl who was taken (with others) and forced to be a prostitute;
the pain from the loss of a child/abortion;
a demon with the appearance of a woman who seduces and kills men;
and so on.
i wonder if the writer doesn't want to reveal the interpretation he or she saw when writing it, that way we can all see our own meaning? I think I'm starting to see the importance of interpretation...
Yai yai! Let's have a- wait what?
I just found this song again, saw this in the comments, and hunted for the lyric you spoke of. Isuccededinfindingit

'Carp streamers are lying on their back' don't carp streamers represent young boys? o.o
haha. yes. the song is supposedly about child prostitution. hence the part about "pretty flowers" being sold.
I knew that :P It's just that I only just realised the particular thing about the carp streamers.
Omg
The visuals are fairly creepy, but I was never really freaked out by this song, I just got hooked on it back in my vocaloid phase.
I think it's pretty neat that there's no official interpretation and that there are many ways to see this song as you want!
this song is actually kinda pretty
uhh, do u know anything that they are saying... definitely not pretty.
aaaaaaaaaand how do you say that?
The music is very pretty. Meaning, not so much...
@@pikipiii689 they said the song is pretty not the lyrics chill
I just LOVE how this song is creepy. Ideally for the your next Halloween party! The song itself is a perfection of how i personally imagine a Halloween Vocaloid song: creepy, a lot of symbols and double - meaning and insanely catchy. It may not contain blood, but it scares you a little bit at least. It prefects the all points.
you know you stumbled onto a banger when youtube recommends a vocaloid song from 13 years ago
*The best Vocaloid's songs, are the "creepy" ones*
Yesyes
A cat, who has lost a leg, is snickering this way:
"The young lady over there, let's play!"
The red string tied to its collar
cannot possibly be used in place of its lost leg.
Ya, ya, ya, ya, I, don't, wanna!
A row of lined-up stupas are singing:
"The young lady over there, let's dance!"
The flowers sneakily blooming underfoot
are grimacing and grumbling.
The carp streamers are showing their bellies,
inside which heaps of skulls are buried.
Yai, yai, shall we go play?
Yai, yai, smile, simle.
Rai, rai, join up, open up.
Rai, rai, the Rakshasa and the corpse.
One, two, three, and again open up.
Five, six, seven, and raise your hands up high.
A collar tied to a pine tree, hanging and swinging,
let's all join up together, everyone together!
The lowly python dies at the foot of the gravestones.
The assembled relatives of the dead have begun fighting.
"I made a vow with him when he was still alive!"
No matter what you claim, the dead will never talk.
Ya, ya, ya, ya, I, hate, this.
Please buy all these pretty flowers,
one after another, buy away all these cute children.
The unsold ones are the unrefined ugly ones;
they are crying in a corner, unnoticed by anybody.
Yai, yai, shall we play a prank?
Yai, yai, dance, dance.
Rai, rai, join up, open up.
Rai, rai, the Rakshasa and the corpse.
Three, two, one, and hold the breath.
Seven, eight, ten, and again join up.
Bearing burns not even blacksmiths can endure,
the cat now goes to close the open sliding door.

Late the other night, a cat with three legs smiled at me,
“Hello mademoiselle, could you come and play with me?”
The scarlet collar wrapped around his neck ever so tightly.
Can not serve as his one missing leg, sadly.
_Ya ya ya ya iya iya iya_
Late the other night, a rank of stupas sang in chorus,
“Hello mademoiselle, could you come and dance with us?”
Down on the ground wild flowers secretly flourish
Frowning and whining with soft petals so lush
On their backs, carp streamers flail in the wind.
Skulls are expected to appear again.

So let, let, let us hold them close and tight.
Late the other day, by a grave, passed a giant python.
His relatives nearby started to argue on and on.
“He promised that he had something to tell me before he died."
But dead men are very good at keeping all their lies.

Late the other day, a group of girls had stood in a line.
The guys with flowers bought the cute ones off, one at a time.

I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to say like “release again” or “spread her legs”
It's a bit creepy but the melody is awesome.
Meh. The concert version is way better. It sounds like an actual Koto is playing and not a bunch of metal hitting eachother.
Kasumi97
Not sure, but didn't the concert version HAVE an actual Koto? >_> I'm not sure. But yes, either way, concert version is superior, as usual.
kraetyz The concert version may have had a Shamisen or Shansin. I'm not sure. I saw one of the guys in the band at the concert playing Acoustic Guitar during this song so they could've tuned it or added different strings in such a way that makes it sound like a Koto
Ah, yeah, that's probably more likely. :P You never know, though, the bands they put together are pretty talented.
"a bit creepy"?!? wtf is really creepy in your world??????
With the art style and such, this feels like something that could come out of an rpg maker horror

This is probably my favorite youtube video. Just the combination of the song itself, with the artwork in this video and the way it was presented was beautifully twisted. I love this so much. Sometimes I stop singing or paying attention to the music just to stare at the artwork, and the converse. All I got left is...wow.
hello i am here exploring old vocaloid songs in 2017 and i am SUCH a massive nostalgic nerd
Wait... in which part can you hear his voice?

The art style complements the song
The author, Hachi, when Miku was talking about babies, literally means the babies have skulls in their chest. Hati is a genius. edit: the kids, Hide, Run, & Escape, from Azakaku No Watashi ni Mirai (痣角の私に未来), had made a group named “Masukiretsu” (demons of short to tall) from, Hide to Escape.
