I live in Latvia and of course i love it but i`m not sure that travelers like it i don`t understand what is the thing that tempt people to visit this country and Riga..
I wish to express my warmest of regards to Riga. I live in Gothenburg. We are both small towns that obey Stockholm. No problem to me. All people should know their limits. If we accept Stockholm hegemony, it will probably lead to wealth. Money is important. In terms of building futures, for instance.
This was just my experience. We went into a Russian niteclub called Roxy with a Latvian friend. He was charged 3 lat in, we were charged 6 lat because we were the only foreigners there. A song came on called 'Ruskie, Ruskie' (Russia, Russia) and we were asked by a guy to get off the dance floor. Very intimidating place. We went to another niteclub called 'La Rocha' which was better and friendlier, but you are very conscious that you are not Latvian and dont belong there.
Gaeilge, the underdevelopness if there is such a word is the beauty and charm of Latvia. You can go to any other European country and get the amenities if you wish. If you come to Latvia, come with an opened mind and respect. Don't come demanding. Latvians don't like that :))) Who does :)))
That is a very big problem in Latvia. Reason why Latvia is so expensive is inflation. Corrupt government play some role in it as well. And employers want to get rich fast at the cost of employees salaries.
Gaeilige: Ha ha ha ha ha, you went to ROXY!!!! I really feel for you and now I feel sorry you didn't get a better guide than the one that brought you to that poo hole :D
I will never return to Latvia, neither will any one I have spoken to about Latvia. It's not just the cost, you have a lot to learn about friendliness/hospitality. As far as I saw in Riga/Ventspils you do not have 'all of the amenities of Western Europe.' It reminded me of Ireland in early 1980s except for Vecriga, which is the tourist area. My point about cost is that Latvia is EVEN DEARER than Ireland and we are a damn expensive country. How can Latvians afford to live there. I do sympathise!
Price in EU has nothing to do with country being developed or not. We are all in the same one economical zone so prices must be similar. Maybe Hungary is more developed at the moment but Latvia has the fastest growing economy in the EU. Unfortunately so is the inflation in Latvia but these things go connected. And why can't Lat be a strong currency? It is your choice where to take breaks but please tell me more about unfriendliness and poor value?
The average wage in Latvia is 300 Lats per month yet it is as expensive as Ireland, yet our average wage is over 2500 euro per month, so I dont see any reason why Latvia should be so expensive.
What a surprise, doh. What did you expect? Latvia is not a cheap Russia or something like that, so wake up. It is European Union and prices are directed from Brussels like in all EU countries. And to add to it there are high inflation (prices sky high) in Latvia.
Those Russian nightclubs (Roxy is tipical Russian as well as La Rocca is owned by Russians too) are not the best place for non-Russian speakers. Song "Russians, Russians" made some national sentiment so they thought it is not meant for foreigners to occupy dance floor and have to make space for Russians. Many Latvians don't like that place also. Not all people of Latvia are Latvians. Latvian is ethnicity. Russian native speakers in Latvia are not Latvians.
Well Ireland is a developed country so we are an expensive country. I was in Hungary it was about half the cost of Ireland and was more developed in my opinion that Latvia. The Lat is a stronger currency than the euro. That's ridiculous. I certainly will not return to Latvia again, neither will anyone I went with. Latvia is a rip off, quite unfriendly also, very poor value.. I'll certainly be taking breaks elsewhere
Riga, a beautiful surprise for me. Too many good things there
RIGA IS SO EXPENSIVE!! It was a shock. Spent a weekend there never again almost as expensive as Ireland
My brother is serving a mission for our church in Latvia right now...He comes home in June *sigh*
здорово!

Riga is beautiful. You were right Arisa Grenfeld!!! Oh by the way, I named my daughter after you. That way I can always have my firend from Riga near.
