      mine I correctly guessed on the nose cause The Chicks with The straight like standing up turned out to be Roosters. and The Chicks that were more closer to the ground turned out to be hens

      We bought two silkie chicks assured they were female. They checked, they said. We had a roostr. Well, he checked out his new hens and soon began to mount them. Everything seemed.....normal. Until three months later when one of the "hens" began to crow. WTF? Oooookay. We named him Roo-Paul. Silkies you can't tell until they lay or crow. Other breeds are a little easier, and then there are sex links, which are no-brainer. I like heritage breeds.....so I end up with roos sometimes!

      What, chicken for "I laid an egg?" Bawk Bawk Bawk Bagoooooock! My babies were raised with "Boop boop boop!" but that's the extent of the chicken language I can share with them at this point. Boop boop boop! Is "come back to mom!" I'm sure after a while everyone recognizes "You are in the nest I want to lay MY egg in!" More of an indignant squawk.

      Where do you live weather wise, if you get little to no cold you can get them now if you want and if you live where it get really cold and it's snowing right now or it will in the next month or two you may want to wait til spring, you want you chicks to be able to fully feathered before the cold really hits where you are it will take a good month or two for the chicks to be fully feathered.

      Fun note that may help you with your decision chickens handle cold better than they do summer heat so if it gets 100° summers, it can very easily kill your chickens that being said if it snows a foot or more in your area that can very well kill your chickens toO

      Something I always kept in mind for sexing three day old chicks was look at their feathers
      If the chick has uniform wings that are shaped like a "C", the wing feathers are all the same length, and they have a short tail it's a cockerel
      If the chick has wings shaped like a staircase, the wing feathers are two different lengths, and they have a long tail it's a pullet
      Remember "C is for Cockerel"

  • @valkyrie1066

    Tractor supply, I purchased four new chicks. "60% sexed?" So I do a wing/vent check when I get them home. My guess is three hens, one ???. Four weeks old now...one has developed a reddening comb, spurs, and a worsening attitude and hasn't even lost all the fluff. He refuses to be picked up or tolerate petting. We chose "prarie bluebells" so they are Americana X Leghorn. Three have pea combs, no wattles and subtle rumps. (one has cheek tufts) A black, a grey, and a wheaten. One has a row comb...yellow, and reddening with the days. Two little knots on his legs getting bigger. He's a dark grey/light grey with splash black spots. They aren't even to six weeks but I have another home to place three of them at. I started the chicks so I end up with a single, spoiled house hen. The one who comes most readily, enjoys petting the most, likes to be snuggled a lot, SHE will be the one to stay. He is loud and demanding and tries to show off for the others, who ignore him(*chuckle*) Two more weeks; if the wheaten turns out as we planned....the other three go to a farm; where a lady is happy to take a "set" of a new breed. Bawk Bawk bawk BAGOOOOOOck.....it means "I laid a egg!"

    And since we’re on the baby chick subject, I have a question for you that may be somewhat different. I haven’t seen it anywhere really I’ve done some research and I like the results that I’ve read but I’m stubborn and I just don’t believe them for some reason.. I’d like to get your honest opinion.. I would assume that some breeds are a little more active than others, but some of my chicks are just not as active as some of them? And some are super active.. my other question & priority is can you feed them too much? the results say no, but I swear sometimes if my chicks eat anymore they’re going to explode 🤷🏻‍♂️ to the point that I am scared to use actual feeders and not just feed them a handful here and there

    • @AcresOfAdventure
      @AcresOfAdventure  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1
