  • Foldforming: This is a short video of making a Heistad Cup. This is one of my favorite foldforms. It makes a cup, from flat sheet, with no seams, in under five minutes. It is the epitomy of foldforming. Traditionally trained goldsmiths will turn the cup around looking for the join, but there is none. This is about the plasticity of metal. There are a number of other ways of folding sheet metal up and putting it through the rolling mill to get a magical result. This one is really cool. If you have different colored metals on each side (like using 18k bimetal) then the outside is one color and the inside another. There are a number of other similarly made Rolled Folds.
The steps for this basic Heistad Cup are:
    Cut a square.
    Anneal.
Fold in half on the diagonal and then again. Tighten.
No need to re-anneal at this point. You can go right to the rolling mill. The closed point of the fold should go in first
Roll the folded triangle until you think the proportions look pretty (often double or more from the original length).
    Anneal it again.
Using chain nose pliers to grip a small piece of each opposite side, pull it open.
Then use your fingers to manipulate the cup and refine the final shape.

Can this be forged by one of us that doesn't have access to a rolling mill?

Not in quite the same way, think of using a rolling pin on dough versus your fingers. You can forge it....

That is really cool but could you end with a suggestion for what to do with it or how to use it. Otherwise - why .... ?

Well, I make shot glasses, martini glasses, have made earrings, flowers, garden ornaments, decorative silver bells for dance dresses, . This is only one of a number of folds done like this, I had a student who had access to a giant rolling mill, she made ones several feet across, and while folded, before rolling, she would drill holes and saw patterns. Then she would roll, and upon unfolding had lamp shades with patterned holes that would project the light. There are hundreds of such folds in foldforming. see brainpress.com/Foldforming.html And the main reason why is that it is cool, and people do not understand the metal's plasticity: this is a teaching tool to change one's understanding and thinking about metal.

I punch a hole through the top of the apex, to use them for christmas decorations. Both designs, the bell shape and the cross - which can hang sideways as well as down. I hang beads from the centre and make a loop for a hanger on the top.
