I've been really interested in aviation for most of my adult life. I thought one day I'd take the leap to learn to fly but found out a private pilot's license is $10,000. That was 15 years ago I learned the price and thought it was always an out of reach pipe dream. One random Saturday morning I turned on TH-cam to watch a video and this documentary played next. It was an amazing film and proved it's not really out of reach. I've flown twice now and plan on continuing for a private license.
It's pretty wild that I'm revisiting this movie now that I'm based out of Van Nuys airport. Previously out of KGYY, i did buy the video when it was released and have it on DVD somewhere in my archives. Thanks for having this out on TH-cam.
This was fantastic. As a student pilot, this literally hit all of the feelings and emotions that come with flying. Every flight, i am more fascinated than the flight before. So well done. Fantastic cinematography. Bravo.
This deserves to be put into a festival, and have hundreds of thousands of views. As a videographer I have a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for this film you have put together .Every-time I need a little inspiration before my next rating I watch this. First solo is the best day in any aviator’s life. The way the plane feels without all that dead weight in the seat is amazing. July 22nd, 2002 and I still remember it like yesterday.
Nice work. Lots of emotion pulled from within me while I watched. My first solo was on September 18, 1998. I sang with excitement the whole time (when I was not on the radios, of course). I got my PPL in August of the following year and on August 28, 1999, I went on my first licensed flight. And I will never forget it. Along with me, I took Taylor Nixon, one of my kindergarten students at the time, his brother Trevor and their mom. Taylor had been diagnosed with leukemia earlier that year so life was a bit of a struggle for him and his family. Although the treatments were taking a toll on Taylor, he was feeling quite excited about the flight. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to be able to provide this experience for the kid. Mom wasn't as excited. I remember getting them all buckled in and starting up the plane when she asked me, "So, have you been flying long?". I replied, "Actually, this is my first flight as a licensed pilot." Mom later confessed that she wanted to get off the plane right then and there but restrained herself for the sake of her little boy. She didn't want to deny him the experience. It was a fantastic flight. Taylor was all smiles sitting beside me in the copilot seat and was all in when I let him take the controls. What an experience for all of us! Taylor did not make it to his eighth birthday. In February of 2000, he lost his battle with leukemia. But I will forever cherish the memory of that flight.

I still remember till this day and I remember it as if it was yesterday. I saw a massive jumbo jet at Heathrow airport and I was around 4 back then and I was so small that i was only tall as a long blade of grass. The first aircraft that caught my attention is the Boeing 777 and since then I have always been fascinated with airplanes and aviation in general. The sound of the airport was obviously deafening because of the jet engines but there was something about aviation that is just perfect for me and aircraft suites my nature and background and will forever be installed in the hearts of those who truly love aviation. It was a chilly afternoon and I was boarding a Boeing 777 200ER Turkish airlines and when I felt the roar of the engines echo the cabin and the exhilaration is indescribable. What’s even better was when it lifts off and the vibration grew less and less due to the reduction in air density and it was a constant roaring sound of the engines that I was able to hear. I used to draw airplanes and imitate the sounds of them as well plus whenever I see any aircraft be it a helicopter, fighter jet or a commercial jet i run towards the window to see the aircraft and I still do whenever I hear a large, aluminium overcast flying over. My ultimate goal is to be a pilot and I yearn in a zealous manner. Basically aviation makes up nearly 95% of me and that all my friends who know me very well know that the topic of aviation is Ahmad Sayyed. Everyone who knows me associates me with aviation Aviation makes me feel worthy and confident. It’s just something that I have to do as an aviation lover like myself. I have to be a pilot flying larger jet aircraft
You are so relatable mate. Its been 8 yrs already since I learned within myself that this is the field where I am so passionate and you know the feeling is just unparalleled just by simply hearing planes roaring. The feeling is just indescribable. I will be a pilot someday. I am clueless as to how and also, our financial capability is insufficient but deep in my heart, I know it well that I will become a pilot someday and I really believe that. Heres what NOONE TALKS ABOUT UNTIL TOO LATE; Unless you come from a family that either owns an aircraft or has a flight instructor in it, it will cost you, big time, and your salary as a new first officer at the regionals? Anywhere from 18k to 25k, maybe break 30k if youre lucky. Yes do the math and you'll realize a burger flipper may make the same as you, but do they have flight training loan debt easily over 100k if lucky, with a murderous interest rate? I bet you saw those "juicy" salaries online claiming 100k-200k annually and believed you could go into such hardcore debt, those numbers are an average, captains at majors with 20yrs make those numbers, they boost that average. F/os will never see it, you could be an f/o for a very long time if x doesnt like you (yes theres insane amount of petty politics) So what does this mean? It means yourself & other f/os getting an apt together wherever youre stuck at, small one, where you may have 2-3 bedrooms 1 bathroom, BUT, 8 of you live there, meaning? Multiple bunkbeds in each room, living off credit cards, a spouse with a good job supporting you, or begging crew scheduling for reserve so you may end up with somewhere "comfy" to sleep at because you cant even afford a crash pad where the regional stuck you at, for the next few years of your life. Thought weeks of nothing but ramen would be over after school? Absolutely not 😂 All the while the creditors are calling you because your payment is late, very late, again, killing what credit you have remaining (ha it wont even exist anymore) Want to get married, have kids, a house? Well you better marry someone with outstanding credit because you wont be getting that mortgage, nevermind a car, not like youll ever need it anyway because you wont be there to enjoy it. That also means girlfriend, wifey, annoyed, frustrated, maybe cheating eventually, because again, you couldn't enjoy her company in your life just like that sweet car you currently dream about. I could continue, but i wont. I just see all the comments here about people wanting to get into aviation with no clue as to what theyre actually getting into, everything i listed is real, it happens ALL THE TIME. With flight training getting more prohibitively expensive every single year, what it means is the new people to the field having harder and harder times financially, at the most important times in their lives. Many many factors of what exoects to gain being a college grad, like family, good job etc, can be absolutely ripped apart and destroyed by this career field. Now, im sure youre thinking if i believe with all this, is it worth it? Thats not for me to say. Every individual and their situation is different. Maybe you dont care about any of that (now while starry eyed) Just be prepared to face everything I've said here if you want to be a pilot. Its not about "how bad do you want to fly" , if it was just about the flying, fly as a rec pilot and itll never ever get ruined for you. Credit, family, etc wont either. Be prepared to sacrifice EVERYTHING for a long time. Take care, good luck, clear skies

A lot of emotion watching this I first Soloed in a Glider on My 14th Birthday, May 27th 2018, I remember it thundered and rained all morning, and just before we almost cancelled the skies cleared and I remember going through my checks and realising there was absolutely no one in the back, then i hooked onto the cable and as soon as the winch kicked into gear i realised how real this was and I remember being so happy and free, reversing turns and flying to my heart’s content, I’d always loved aircraft, and so my first solo was rooted in my brain as the moment it all went from a dream to reality, i sometimes wonder how many people down below me have seen me and wanted to give it a go, especially when i fly low for approach over a village, i hope that I’ve inspired people with flying just as i was inspired
I can’t afford to learn how to fly, but I’m okay with being one of the people that support the aircraft when it’s on the ground. I’m still happy though because I get to be around jetliners all day.
No idea how I have never seen this video. But same, my first solo (remember like it was yesterday) rained and stormed all night then turned into a perfect Midwest June evening.
As a nervous flyer I found this great. Unfortunately when people who don’t like flying have a flight coming up they watch “airline investigations” instead of videos like this. 👍🏻

I love the emphasis a lot of these people have put on just getting in and flying. I’ve been trying for a long while now and I’ve had several family health issues, scheduling issues, money issues and this year got engaged and bought my first house and have had all the expenses along with those all while working a full time job only being able to fly some weekends when I have the money. I’ve heard so many people say that if you don’t devote a certain amount of hours every week you’ll never retain your knowledge. But even in the midst of all that I’ve had going on this year I just soloed a week ago. I know even if it takes me a decade to become a commercial pilot, I will get there and I’ll be even more proud of myself. All this to say if you want to fly, just go fly. Don’t let anyone take that hope from you and most importantly don’t limit yourself. Even if you just get to train a bit here and there just go fly and then “chair fly” a whole lot in between to retain that knowledge. I’ll find my path and I hope you do too.
I’m a newer private pilot who just passed 80 flight hours. Whenever there is someone who asks why I fly, I send them to this film… it captures the essence of general aviation much better than I can describe! Wonderful job
Aviation is fast becoming my new obsession. I have just started playing around with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and to say it is fascinating would be an understatement. I have hopes of being a qualified pilot one day, even though I am already in my mid-30s and already thriving in another career. I also hope to get my kids interested in Aviation so they can pursue it as one of their career options when they fly from my nest. It would be such a great legacy to leave for my kids, if I can teach them to soar.

As a student pilot currently studying for my written exams the moment I am writing this. I watched this film during a study break and this just brings so much motivation and joy to keep going forward and be grateful that I can have these experiences and can share them with my friends and family as soon as I get my license. Currently 20 Hours in, got my solo at 9 hours. All I can say is don't let your dreams be dreams, and just go chase them. To this day I never regret walking through that door at my local flight school.
I soloed in 6 hours back in 2002. I knew it was coming, because my instructor mentioned (at the 4 hour mark) that I had to have my medical done before I could solo. I made my appointment and got it done, and soloed on my next lesson. It was fun listening to these pilots talk about how the plane felt without the instructor in the other seat. I remember how quick the plane popped off of the runway and that I flared too much on my first touch and go. Still have my cut t-shirt.

Thank you Daniel. Im in my 50's now and still a low time pilot because my job keeps me from flight time. But I still have a deep love for aviation. I recently got certified under basicmed to get back in the airplane and I also got my BFR done so Im flying again. I can't wait to take my little boy up and show him the wonder of flight. Soloed when I was in my 20's, 25 years ago and stopped flying shortly after when I ran out of money. Cannot shake the bug to go back! Loved this video and thanks for reminding me of my first solo!!!!

Awesome film, this beautifully captured the very heart of what it's like to fly. I was one of those who thought flying could only be achieved by the rich, but I'm only a couple years out from having enough to start lessons. I work with people who think $300 a hell of a lot of money to spend per lesson, but I agree wholeheartedly with the instructor I first flew with in that when you can jump in a plane and soar around wherever you like, that amount of money is nothing. It's those people I want to show this to, and maybe it'll give them an idea of why I'm so fixated on getting my PPL
Thank you! Yeah, there's no denying that it is expensive to get into... but if it's a passion, the money doesn't matter. I completely agree with you. Keep on saving, and keep up that attitude. Once you start taking lessons, it happens fast.
Im from Norway and stumbled upon this video now. I got my PPL here In Norway where the GA community is close to non existant and i just got this sudden urge to experience the American community after this video. I seems like a dream come true to be at these flying events and flying with your freids in different aircraft as you do in the video. Im jealous of America and its seemsly perfect community that i don't have here where I live. But my passion is still here, and the appreciation of getting to experience flight at such a young age is nonetheless a blessing. Thank you for creating such a materpeace of a video.

This is very inspirational! I can see that you guys have put a lot of effort into making this video and it is amazing! I started flying when I was young and now I'm an flight instructor. I still remember my first solo which took place almost 6 years ago as it happened just yesterday haha. Thank you for sharing your work! Gr8Reels thanks man I appreciate it! The GH5 is a perfectly suitable camera to do the job, I almost wish I had it for this film. Once you get used to grading you can make pretty much any footage look like this.

Just be prepared to face everything I've said here if you want to be a pilot. Its not about "how bad do you want to fly" , if it was just about the flying, fly as a rec pilot and itll never ever get ruined for you. Credit, family, etc wont either. Be prepared to sacrifice EVERYTHING for a long time.

I first Soloed in a Glider on My 14th Birthday, May 27th 2018, I remember it thundered and rained all morning, and just before we almost cancelled the skies cleared and I remember going through my checks and realising there was absolutely no one in the back, then i hooked onto the cable and as soon as the winch kicked into gear i realised how real this was and I remember being so happy and free, reversing turns and flying to my heart’s content, I’d always loved aircraft, and so my first solo was rooted in my brain as the moment it all went from a dream to reality, i sometimes wonder how many people down below me have seen me and wanted to give it a go, especially when i fly low for approach over a village, i hope that I’ve inspired people with flying just as i was inspired
I can’t afford to learn how to fly, but I’m okay with being one of the people that support the aircraft when it’s on the ground. I’m still happy though because I get to be around jetliners all day.
No idea how I have never seen this video. But same, my first solo (remember like it was yesterday) rained and stormed all night then turned into a perfect Midwest June evening.
As a nervous flyer I found this great. Unfortunately when people who don’t like flying have a flight coming up they watch “airline investigations” instead of videos like this. 👍🏻

I love the emphasis a lot of these people have put on just getting in and flying. I’ve been trying for a long while now and I’ve had several family health issues, scheduling issues, money issues and this year got engaged and bought my first house and have had all the expenses along with those all while working a full time job only being able to fly some weekends when I have the money. I’ve heard so many people say that if you don’t devote a certain amount of hours every week you’ll never retain your knowledge. But even in the midst of all that I’ve had going on this year I just soloed a week ago. I know even if it takes me a decade to become a commercial pilot, I will get there and I’ll be even more proud of myself. All this to say if you want to fly, just go fly. Don’t let anyone take that hope from you and most importantly don’t limit yourself. Even if you just get to train a bit here and there just go fly and then “chair fly” a whole lot in between to retain that knowledge. I’ll find my path and I hope you do too.

I’m a newer private pilot who just passed 80 flight hours. Whenever there is someone who asks why I fly, I send them to this film… it captures the essence of general aviation much better than I can describe! Wonderful job
Aviation is fast becoming my new obsession. I have just started playing around with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and to say it is fascinating would be an understatement. I have hopes of being a qualified pilot one day, even though I am already in my mid-30s and already thriving in another career. I also hope to get my kids interested in Aviation so they can pursue it as one of their career options when they fly from my nest. It would be such a great legacy to leave for my kids, if I can teach them to soar.

As a student pilot currently studying for my written exams the moment I am writing this. I watched this film during a study break and this just brings so much motivation and joy to keep going forward and be grateful that I can have these experiences and can share them with my friends and family as soon as I get my license. Currently 20 Hours in, got my solo at 9 hours. All I can say is don't let your dreams be dreams, and just go chase them. To this day I never regret walking through that door at my local flight school.

I soloed in 6 hours back in 2002. I knew it was coming, because my instructor mentioned (at the 4 hour mark) that I had to have my medical done before I could solo. I made my appointment and got it done, and soloed on my next lesson. It was fun listening to these pilots talk about how the plane felt without the instructor in the other seat. I remember how quick the plane popped off of the runway and that I flared too much on my first touch and go. Still have my cut t-shirt.
This reminds me of the doc Living in the Age of Airplanes which came out about the same time

Thank you Daniel. Im in my 50's now and still a low time pilot because my job keeps me from flight time. But I still have a deep love for aviation. I recently got certified under basicmed to get back in the airplane and I also got my BFR done so Im flying again. I can't wait to take my little boy up and show him the wonder of flight. I saw a viewer said this documentary should be shown at film festivals and I whole heartedly agree. The world on the ground is missing out on a world in the air. Thank you again.
Soloed when I was in my 20's, 25 years ago and stopped flying shortly after when I ran out of money. Cannot shake the bug to go back! Loved this video and thanks for reminding me of my first solo!!!!

Awesome film, this beautifully captured the very heart of what it's like to fly.
I was one of those who thought flying could only be achieved by the rich, but I'm only a couple years out from having enough to start lessons.
I work with people who think $300 a hell of a lot of money to spend per lesson, but I agree wholeheartedly with the instructor I first flew with in that when you can jump in a plane and soar around wherever you like, that amount of money is nothing.
It's those people I want to show this to, and maybe it'll give them an idea of why I'm so fixated on getting my PPL
Thank you! Yeah, there's no denying that it is expensive to get into... but if it's a passion, the money doesn't matter. I completely agree with you. Keep on saving, and keep up that attitude. Once you start taking lessons, it happens fast.

Im from Norway and stumbled upon this video now. I got my PPL here In Norway where the GA community is close to non existant and i just got this sudden urge to experience the American community after this video. I seems like a dream come true to be at these flying events and flying with your freids in different aircraft as you do in the video. Im jealous of America and its seemsly perfect community that i don't have here where I live. But my passion is still here, and the appreciation of getting to experience flight at such a young age is nonetheless a blessing. Thank you for creating such a materpeace of a video.

optimusPrime I just shot at 24fps with a 180 degree shutter angle (1/48). That gave enough motion blur to make the prop disappear at higher RPMs.

Gr8Reels nice! It was shot on the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Same with the other video you asked about. Only exception is the slow motion stuff, which was shot on an URSA or an FS700.

I've been shooting on a GH5 for a while which is great but your footage and grade is so creamy. Definitely rival One Six Right. Bravo!!
Gr8Reels thanks man I appreciate it! The GH5 is a perfectly suitable camera to do the job, I almost wish I had it for this film. Once you get used to grading you can make pretty much any footage look like this.
