When an image of Home Secretary Priti Patel, a daughter of Asian immigrants, watching a supposed immigration raid went viral, many people online were quick to point out the apparent hypocrisy of Patel's tough on immigration stance.
In this deep dive, Byline Times editor Hardeep Matharu explores the Home Secretary's family history, her Ugandan Indian heritage and why race, Britishness and immigration from former colonies is a far more complex and often surprising topic. Priti Patel claims that the opposition's portrayal of her as 'the wrong sort of ethnic minority' is in itself a racist trope, while Hardeep Matharu argues her belief in and policy planning based on the existence of 'the right kind of immigrant' can be just as problematic.

Just like all the British immigrants in the EU who voted for brexit.
@@Pining_for_the_fjords a lot of British immigrants in the EU didn't get a vote on the referendum, and if you look at the facts only 17.4 million voted to leave the EU out of approx 48 million electorate. Excellent analysis. Many of those Asians who came from East Africa had internalised racism towards black Africans in the colonies. Also many refused to acknowledge just how much help they did receive as refugees and economic migrants.
Blacks were also racist to other groups
Specifically looking at East Africa there was a clear hierarchy in colonial times with Africans at the bottom. If you live within that system it's going to affect your mindset. Just like Britons brought up during Empire days have a certain mindset. Everyone absorbs the culture they are brought up within.

Patel's family were "legal" immigrants.
@@jrobs1133 what's that got to do with anything? Priti Patel aside, I have observed for years a resentment on the part of some settled immigrants here to the UK continuing to allow new immigrants to come - its as if they want the door slammed shut once they're in. Priti Patel, though, does seem to border on a psychopathy of some sort - another reason she fits with the current government. The other thing is, just because you are member of an ethnic minority in the UK and may have experienced abuse, does not mean you yourself are not capable of expressing the same abuse to other, different ethnic minorities. Racism exists in all colours....
I do not understand how people can make all encompassing statements such as the one you made. You talk about settled immigrants as if they are a monolithic group, all with the same ideas and views. This is not the case. My family - from Jamaica have been in the UK from the early 1950s. Most of us have no problems with legal immigrants coming to the UK, but I know my own brother does not want them at all. There is a difference of opinion within each group of settled 'immigrants'. Priti Patel contrary to her own narrative was NOT thrown out of Uganda. Her family came to this country in the 60s. Idi Amin came into power after that. He did not throw the Asians out of Uganda until 72. I know because this happened to my parents. Priti Patel’s family was part of a select moneyed group of people who emigrated after the British left. They were economic migrants NOT refugees. They took their money out of Uganda and landed in the UK with citizenship use before Amin I mean came to power.
Please stop giving credence to her story - it’s not true.
My parents were mixed race half Ugandan and half Indian. They were still asked to leave Uganda because of their Indian heritage. They came here in November 72. The stories they would tell of how the Asians treated Ugandans would leave you in disgust. They acted horrendously abusing power money and control. There is a strong degree of racism in many of the Ugandan Asians that has persisted from those times.

@Jas Singh Not even close buddy
@Jas Singh No worries Jas and this is what a debate or a conversation should look like... I do see and accept your alert in regards to Poland and Hungary. I am Czech and Poland is our neighbour with Hungary very close as well... We look at the developments with great worry + my friends in these countries are even more frustrated and fighting back.
When it comes to intra EU immigration, the situation was different. We entered the EU in 2004 alomg with 10 more countries and we had a 10 years period, where other EU cointries had the right to ban free stays in their own countries fearing exactly what happened in the UK. So for 10 years I could not simply up and go to live/work to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, etc... Many countries opted for 7-10years, however it was a surprise that the UK decided not to go ahead and left its market open. The other misconception, that even today I am free just like that to go and live/work in any EU country. Yes the paperwork amounts only to a registration but there must be proof of income otherwise one must return within 3months...
I have visited the UK and it can be overwhelming to witness a huge number of incoming causing instant friction and agreed... The numbers should have been controlled but in so many ways, this could have been done by adhering to the ´show me the funds´ with you not being in Schengen, so it was easy to turn back anyone. But we are not here to shift blame to one party or the other. Benefits from immigrants can be debated ad nauseum from an economic point of view or a political point of view and every country and city has the right to fight for its identity. We do not have the number of immigrants as the UK, after all Czech is hard to master but I have seen many immigrants (I include expats in that term) from Belarus, Ukraine and other Eastern European that flee their country and made their home here as they do checrish a free society and that does make me content as these people are educated and will bring benefits in having Czechs used to foreigners after being closed for 40+ years behind the iron curtain.
I agree 100% with controlled immigration and as a sovereign state, you have every right.. After all you cannot expand the island and fit in so many people, but we cannot ignore the reality that English is an easy language so that makes you a very lucrative destination + a certain % of these people arriving either already have connections in the UK or come from country that has historical ties with the UK but if we are talking about European immigrants, I believe language is key. If you look at other countries including ours and ones that are far richer (i.e. Switzerland for example)... Immigration isn´t sraighforward and numbers are controlled and not easy at all whether you are an EU citizen or not... The V4 including the Czech rep. have always refused the automatic allocation of refugees within the union and seeking a real solution as these refugees tend to end up in the coutries they want anyway (I see mostly Germany, UK and France)
What I am trying to say is that across the channel, we noticed the general UK public and politics tends to be overshadowed by very strange media (no other description other than it being yellow journalism) affecting main policies. We have tabloids but they are taken with sarcasm and would be unheard of to discuss the likes of the Mirror or the Sun in mainstream TV or radio.
One more big difference between us and that is the UK from the begining has seen and joined the European project as purely an economic endeavour and not a political one, where most of us ´new member states´ see it as an integral political part how to anchor our countries in the west/north atlantic club of nations as Russia never accepted us not being as part of their influence and their threat is very very real. What you experienced with the poisoning of Skripal is but a small example. The Russian federation is actively undermining our political system from the early 1990s and you can ask anyone in the baltics and Poland on how they have to fight hard to face that threat... So our stories are really different when it comes to the EU... Many here are sceptic too as its not a perfect union, but there is an opportunity to work on it and make it better and evolve into a more cohesive bloc without losing ones identity.. its not only for cross border trade, lorry trucks and supply chain but we all face a greater threat with Russia and China as prime examples. Real politik is a thing and as nice as Global Britain sounds (please do not take it as me disparaging the UK) and you have the right to venture out in the world finding you place, but the world changed and we find it difficult to grasp leaving the Union that is on your doorstep, where you had so much power and influence to make changes, replacing it with bilaterals now representing a far smaller market with countries you have no real trade with or are on the other side of the globe making trade uneconomical. I could be wrong and this could be the best decision ever, however I revert to the way we view the EU as a political project and not only economic.
Have a good day buddy... I would love to wish you a sunny day but not sure about UK weather :)))))) So wishing a sunny day from beautiful Prague atleast...

"Why did Ms Patel the lie about those meetings."

It happens quite often that descendents of immigrants take the toughest stance on immigration. It's a way of masking their accomplished privileges.
Or - as often - a way of excusing their unearned privileges...
Pulling the ladder up behind them
A bit like former smokers , ok maybe not as extreme as former smokers.
Because they came here legally, worked hard, and got rewarded. I understand why they take a tough stance against those jumping the queue at the expense of other legal immigrants. It's unfair to come here illegally on those that want to do it the right way. But you don't care that legal immigrants will miss out.
@@jrobs1133 Woosh. That's the point going over your head. :-)

This is a really insightful video and something that hadn't occurred to me before. That kind of "work hard" Empire mentality must be quite strong for some people to believe they are genuinely better than other immigrants.
It's the Commonwealth verses the EU. People of the Commonwealth were often more "British than the British" because it was instilled from an early age that British culture was their culture. The Queen was *their* Mother. Britain was the Motherland. They spoke the Queen's English. Often times the education levels of Commonwealth countries is higher than Britain because of the propaganda of British excellence being indoctrinated. The people within Britain really have no idea.
@@DeborahWalkerXOXO Thank you for that. The drama continues to play out in the Commonwealth. Though born into it I continue to observe and to try and comprehend. A hundred years since my grandfather left India in search of a better life. I remain where he settled, one of the last few of the older waves. The rest all migrated to the UK. Some then onwards to the US. And yes I went to a minor public school where my schoolmates thought I'd been sent down from Eton. The villagers in Shropshire couldn't get over me when I spoke. Speech patterns et al. Much peace from Kenya ... 😊🙏
The colonial concept of Britishness is not understood by the native English. The Ulster Unionists, from the first British colony, have the same perception of Britishness as the Ugandan Asian. Also voted for Brexit and are equally not understood by the native English. Britishness enabled their sense of exceptionalism in a divide and rule colonial society, now they are just regarded as useful idiots by English nationalists and as seen in NI, discardable.
@@fgcasey Sad but true. I expect. In my sixth decade it is a bit much to reprogramme myself and I continue living a fairly peaceful life in Kenya despite the last 18 months which seem to have brought an unrecognisable face to the UK ... Much peace from Kenya ... 😊🙏

Eurgh!!
Things were left out of her, things like empathy and humanity.
In the days of empire, empathy and humanity were not encouraged towards those beneath one's station. That was the case in Uganda and how Indians saw Africans. She's the product of structures created centuries ago. That same inhumanity shown towards the Ugandans is being played out against asylum seekers in Britain.
@@astonia131 I heartily agree with you - that's a great insight. Sadly it's not just being played out against asylum seekers: the 'hostile environment' has harmed thousands.
Britain is in economic decline. Since the 1950's we have been growing the workforce while factories continue to offshore. North Sea oil has been in decline since 2000 and this is why the UK has not managed to produce a fiscal surplus for the last 20 years. Finally someone saying what many black people have been saying over the years
Yeah, we experience Asian (Indian) racism wherever they are. Doesn't matter if it's in Africa, The Carribean or in Europe-we are mostly 2nd class citizen to them. They would never let Black people in India treat them like they treat us. Living in England opened my eyes.
It’s true. Much to my annoyance, Indians are incredibly racist. You can add the subcontinent generally to that statement - so I will include Pakistanis and Bangladeshis (to a slightly lesser degree).
My parents came from Uganda. Both my grand mothers were Ugandan, my grandfathers were Indian. My parents were still told to leave the country due to their Indian heritage. The funny thing is, in Uganda they were not considered Indian enough by the purebloods. But welcomed with open arms on the Ugandan side. This has been passed on to other generations - I consider myself Ugandan first even though I look really Indian. But many of the Asians here have told me not to admit to my African heritage. Frankly this pissed me off! Time and time again they would denigrate anybody who is dark skinned. Part of the reason why I have very few Indian friends. It truly disgusts me and I can’t have anything to do with it.

Her family came to this country legally many years ago and she was born and raised here so she is British with a healthy respect for her heritage. She wants to protect her country and as a politician run it properly and successfully.
Because she cracks down on illegal immigration she some how selling out India and sucking up to the white man when India itself has a far stricter immigration policy than the UK that even is discriminate against certain groups such as Muslims. Yet you don't say she is trying to introduce a more Indian style immigration system in the UK do you.
You are brainwashed by the left to think that immigration is a racial issue and it's about white supermacy and all these things but yet you completely ignore that every country white or not has immigration systems and doesn't allow illegal immigration. Not only that but white countries have some of the most fair and open immigration systems in the world and that is exactly why countries like the UK have large Indian communities, Pakistani communities, Caribbean communities. People can come to this country from anywhere in the world as long as it is done legally.

As someone from a black Caribbean background and having grown up with lots of Asians in the West Midlands, I could see someone like Priti Patel coming along years ago. Britain is going to be turned into a caste system type society, with yours truly despite an university education in Computing Science being pushed/kept at the bottom of the pile. This is why I left the UK to live proper in the EU, years ago well before Brexit. I now live in The Netherlands.
P Patel has fallen deeply in love with her own reflection "mirror mirror on the wall who is the best home secretary of all?"
"When you put the hammer down I will give you an honest answer...MY PRETTY...."
She is a despicable human being, always amazes me that immigration form non EU countries is greater than from EU countries. In other words we could control immigration but did not because we rely on them.
That photo reminds me of how Britain ruled over India, it was divide and conquer.
There was a Indian army who had a sworn loyalty to the British crown and enforce British rule over India. This Indian army was made of people from India with many Hindu's, who would beat their fellow country men and women. With Hindu's placing themselves above other groups in India.
The British empire managed India like it did with other countries where one ethnic group was given many advantages to be favioured over another.
So when you look at the photo of Priti Patel, think of the roll that the Hindu's had with the Indian army.
Biggest lies of century there were some people devoted to British empire but majority hated and wanted freedom

I suspect the Indian caste system has much to do culturally with how Pritti and other Asian immigrants see themselves in the great racial divide, and their need to wear their Britishness and patriotism on their sleeves.
There are the two famous Asian couples, The Coopers, and the even more snobbish The Robinsons, featured in the BBC comedy series, Goodness Gracious Me, trying oh so much to be "British" and patriotic. Pritti Patel can so easily be identified as the parody of Mrs. Robinson, the snobbish Indian wanting soooo desperately to "fit in" to her new country, and who looks down upon the 'lesser' Cooper Asians in the show, desperately trying to reach the social status of the Indian Robinsons.
It has been my experience that a large percentage of Asians known to me, make up some of the most rabid racists.
Patel's parents came here some time in the 1960's, years before Amin's purge promise, Why not emphasise that?
Does anyone else think Hardeep Matharu (the editor/presenter here) sounds uncannily like Priti Patel? XD
I though it was her estranged sister. She over emphasizes the last vowel, it's posh to do the opposite !! for example Social Meediaaaaah instead of Social Media

No-Pity Prattel's biggest mistake is her misconception of her position in the Tory party. Up to this point, she is useful to tick some boxes, then she will be made a scapegoat for something or the other. After all, nobody in her own party takes her seriously: she is not of their class background, colour or gender. (hence her bullying)
Patel's biggest mistake is thinking she will be spared the fate others like her might suffer if she hates them for the gratification of a certain group. But she forgets people respect enemies but traitors are only used and then discarded.
If priti patel had 1 magic wish... end world hunger?, world peace?, become the richest person on earth?..... her 1 wish would be...... to become white.
We have to remember that many Asian immigrants did not come just from East Africa, but from India (as my parents), Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc. They also worked just as hard and helped contribute to Britain and also helping to fill in the labour shortages that faced this country. It’s annoying to see how backward as a Country we have become. Less tolerant and more selfish. All the work that everyone in this Country has done to make Britain what it is (positive aspects) is now being undone.

Priti "No Shame" Patel.
Same mindset here in Trinidad tbh, indentureship and colonialism really fooled indo-Trinbagonian ppl into thinking that because they were treated better than afro-Trinbagonian s that the whites were therefore their compatriots. The old give 1 group a little power so the other is jealous of them as to distract that from the reality that we are the real evil. The British did it with Field slaves and House slave to such a level that house slaves were almost oblivious to the fact that they were still slaves. The same was repeated with indentured servants and former slaves, the British brought Indentured servants in to work for a pittance but also subsidized housing. While they didn't for free ppl as to create a false enemy in the indentured servants, while making the indentured feel superior to the former slaves. All the while the British were making a thousand times off of both of their subsidies labour. A caste system in effect
Priti was bullied by immigrants at school.. now she's taking revenge.

This is very true - I lived in Uganda for 6 years and the way some of the Indians would treat Ugandans is honestly despicable. Not saying all the Asians are racist, but some of them really are.
