  • A cab ride aboard a Southern Class 455 from East Croydon to London Bridge (via Crystal Palace and Tulse Hill)
    Please note that at times the sound is muted, due to safety critical conversation between the cab crew. Apologies for this - I hope it doesn't detract too much from the video

    This brings back memories... Leaving Platform 2 at East Croydon with signal at end of platform showing a GREEN aspect one day in the 1980's with a 12-car morning commuter train (06:17) from Bognor Regis to Victoria... I found to my horror that the signal that hides behind that damned bridge at Windmill Bridge Junction... was set for Norwood Jn & frigging London Bridge!... I was doing 60mph, which was the line speed & there was no way that I was going to be able to stop at said signal & if I'd dumped the brake... I'd probably have ended up being "gapped" across the junction... I therefore brought my train to a controlled stop at the next signal... where a very interesting conversation took place with the signalman to either... go to Norwood Jn, change ends (walking past my adoring public) go back to East Croydon (walking past my adoring public... again) & set sail for Vic... or go to Vic via Crystal Palace, Tulse Hill & Streatham Hill... a route fortunately I knew... This is the route we took... arriving at Vic just a tad late.... Now happily retired after more than 40 years service, the last 30 completely non-electrified... carry on with the good work... BTW... Selhurst Depot was always known as the Turkey Farm... the drivers there always had their noses in the trough, Gobbling....

      No... The signalman simply dropped a bollock.. I should really have have twigged, as a Gatwick-Vic passed me on the up fast just before Windmill bridge Jn... And it was via Crystal Palace, West Norwood & Streatham Hill, coming out on the up slow at Balham... Nobody's perfect... We all make mistakes... but that was a proper job... Retired now 18 months

      No, nothing special about the tunnel, nothing closed off or abandoned. As you exit at the southern end, there is a junction immediately before the Crystal Palace platforms which diverges into what are now the LOROL platforms and on to Sydenham station etc, but that's all.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends what the cab conversation is. Sometimes members of staff say things that shouldn’t be made public. Sometimes it’s conversations with the signaller that might be sensitive.
      If in doubt, I cut it out. Simple as. Better to err on the side of caution
