Dan/Anna : that is Nasi Campur (Mixed Rice). It's white rice and you can choose any gravies (protein/veggies) to "mix" with the rice.
It is a typical Malay food (all over Malaysia) - you can see a lot of various fried and gravy dishes to "mix' (campur) to the rice.
That's why you can go to the same shop every day and try different mix and match combinations.
    .
The green vegetable is (young) Kasava leaves. The green elongated bean is kacang botol (winged bean)
    .
Difference between concept of Nasi Campur and Nasi Kandar :
Nasi campur is like french elegance fashion : you have to find a suitable match between the protein and the veggies. Usually 1 rice (the base), 1 protein, 1 veggie and maybe additional 1 extra protein or veggie. And usually we add sambal to enhance the taste (accessories). Eating nasi campur is an art.
Nasi kandar is like hip hop bling bling fashion : everything is some sort of curry. The gravies are the bling-bling - just add everything if you can afford it. It's about exuberance, not really elegance.

Yes it was so much to choose on and we don’t have the skills to eat the fishes. Someday someone has to show us how to properly eat them. Or do you have an easy way to explain how to eat them?

    • @sultrys2291

@@dananna8614 Depends on individual but for me, I like to balance the taste. The basic is Rice + protein + veggie (3 items) but you can always add an extra protein or an extra veggie (4 items).(aim for less then RM10/plate 😀 )
You can balance it for example like this:
      - if I chose something with coconut milk, the other dish I choose without.
      - if one is white or clear, the other one choose red (chilli / sweet spicy or tomatoey) or black (soy sauce). (it's not the colour but the taste that comes with the ingredient that gives the colour)
      - if one is fried/dry, choose another with some gravy
      - if one is heavy (with thick coconut milk or oily eg rendang or thick curry), choose another one slightly acidic (pineapples, cucumber, pickles/acar or just fresh veggies)
Those are just simple examples. You can always try mix and match. Will never get boring.
Always put sambal at the side for "accessory" (taste enhancer).
      Good luck !!

Happy healthy lunch. A complete combination of all the essential items, protein, carbohydrate etc. The green vege is called winged bean or kacang botol in Malay. Kindly Google for more info. Both of you seemed accustomed to make the dish choices. We are happy to see you satisfied and satiated. I also like Mee bandung and murtabak. The restaurant should provide all tables with fans for customers. Sorry for the incoveniences while you are in small eatery like that.

Head up, there are more type of rice.
    1. Nasi lemak ( you already know this)
    2. Nasi Daging (Meat rice)
    3. Nasi Dagang ( Trader rice)
    4. Nasi Kerabu (Vege assorted rice)
    5. Nasi Briyani ( I dunno its English equavalent meaning)
    6. Nasi tomato ( Tomato rice)
    7. Nasi goreng ( Fried rice, general name but there many subtypes)
    8. Nasi Minyak (Oiled rice, common during wedding event)
    9. Nasi Kuning/Kunyit ( Yellow/Turmeric Rice)
    10. Nasi Ayam ( Chicken Rice)
    11. Nasi Impit ( Compacted rice)
And many more, but only these that I can think of.

what u called sauces of the dishes,we called it kuah (gravy) ,at least in malaysia, the term sauces mostly applied to the western dishes.. if u trying out local dishes with strong flavors of scent, thick look (such as curry, masak lemak ) ,sometimes its best to use it by hand ,trying it out like local while u experiencing the dishes in the region..one of the aftereffect is,the scent of gravy/kuah is stick to your hand.. to do this,of course its better cut off all the nail, wash the hand, using the right hand to eat, left to dissamble anything on the plate..

Usually there is a minimum charge for each dish you pick even if you take a very2 small amount....so most malaysian dont like to pick too many dishes in 1 plate....3 or 4 the most. if i come with my partner each will take different dishes with double scoop so we can share instead of puting in individual plate for same dish....price is less. but that is for stingy people like me working in an area where typical plate of nasi campur of rice, a piece of chicken/fish and 2 different vege cost around RM10-15.
