I think this song is talking about how a mere minstrel, someone who looks so ordinary yet mysterious, can produce such alluring magic through his musical skill. Of course, that's simply my interpretation

Anderson is a long-time family friend of Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night, whom he describes as "The impossibly beautiful Candice." I would agree.
Literally listening to this today for the millionth time and when the flute kicked in, I was like "WHA! Ian Anderson!" Lol, looked it up to be sure, but that flute sound is such a signature. Can't believe I never noticed before today. Maybe because I've been on a Tull bender the last month or so... :D

Not even close. The melody resembles the medieval a lot more than Renaissance wherein they started using similar instruments to the modern guitar and where the piano was starting to be popular

My mind came up with a different story: he is a plague-bearer. They could have seen the marks or the disease in his face by the light of day, but he came to them at night, playing songs, people gathering round, dancing, getting in contact with him. The next day they realised the plague has spread within their own town.

In the LIVE version, they confirm Ian plays on the studio version. He just did not tour with them.
