    Im glad you pointed out that social workers can also be mental health therapists [Licensed master social worker (LMSW) under supervision and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW)] because a lot of people do not know about all of the possibilities that come with a social work degree and career.

    Social workers make up ~70% mental health therapist in the United States. The distinction is social work versus clinical social work. You can only do your masters degree in 1 year if you have a BSW, meet the GPA and other requirements to qualify for the advanced MSW program thus most people will complete a 2-3 year MSW program. MSW program are generally very broad compared to other therapist/counseling programs because social workers do a lot of jobs. But you can do ab masters in social work with a concentration in mental health or clinical work if you know you want to be a therapist. Good video. Thanks for sharing.

      This. I’m actually working towards licensure for LCSW & plan to do therapy. LCSW’s definitely make up the bulk of therapist. They will typically also be hired in hospitals before a mental health therapist. The goal is to know what track you want to be on before entering either program, so that you won’t be essentially locked in. Both degrees are needed.

    As a Social Worker, Case management and Social Workers is not interchangeable. Social workers can work as case managers but case managers are necessarily a social worker. Case managers don’t need a social work degree or a license to be case manager.

      @TheIndomitable1908 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for stating this because a case manager can’t be a social worker. She totally provided the wrong information.

  • @p0urr1

    Case worker/ social worker are not always the same. Not every case worker needs a SW degree. Social work is not case management based, it's multifaceted. SW's can be case workers, case managers, medical social workers ( discharge planner, dialysis, geriatrics, aging, care/treatment planners, etc.) They can also work in the legal field as well as education, policy change, business, and of course mental health therapist. Our field is not case management, referrals, and immediate solution based, we provide long- term care as well. It all depends on what you want to do with your degree.

    Thanks for the video. There are graduate school programs with Clinical Social Work specializations. Most programs require 1,000 hour internship (divided into two 500 hour internships). Clinical Social Workers also diagnose along with help people understand and process their thoughts, emotions and experiences in therapy. One of the first courses we take is human behavior (person-in environment) focused. Social Workers have to take 2 exams. The first one is an associate licensure exam after completing Graduate School to qualify for the LMSW associate licensure. Then, a second exam (LCSW) exam to gain independent licensure.

    • @queencece3012

    As someone who just graduated undergrad with my bachelors in psychology, I really appreciate you elaborating on the differences between the two. I’ve applied for more social work jobs since they’re entry level and the degree works there, but I want to finalize my career direction so I can go back to school after my gap year. I didn’t know anything about mental health therapists. If you don’t mind, could you explain the difference between mental health therapists, counselors, psychologists, and life coaches? I’m trying to figure out which path is best for me but I’m having trouble deciphering the difference. I think I’m more so into helping people stay positive and motivated, helping them understand the ups and downs and life, etc. I think I’m okay with providing them with resources as well. I’m okay with helping with anxiety and depression, but I honestly don’t think I can handle schizophrenia, ptsd, etc. I also don’t want to diagnose people or hand out meds. Sorry for the very lengthy question and Again, thank you so much for this video!

      Psychologists and life coaches do not compare. One needs a Doctorate the other does not require a high school diploma. Anyone can call themselves a life coach. You would need to go to med school to handle out meds, so no worries about that.

    This is a great video! I have an MSW, and I’m happy you added that a social worker can also be a therapist! Haha I was in the comment section typing away to clarify that, and then you mentioned it. 💜 I agree, social work therapists do ask those questions about the person’s environment, along with providing that emotional/therapeutic support. So if you are interested in being a therapist that also provides those environmental resources, I think social work is a good fit. And you are correct! At the end of the day, both professional often end up working together with similar titles, so the two fields are very very similar. I’ll also add that I had to get my MSW in two years, since my bachelors degree wasn’t social work. It was psychology. Anyway, I love your energy, and on point video!

    Social workers are multitalented....Some of the major differences lie with the term ‘ social worker’ as there isn’t title protection in all states. Thus , those with a degree in SW are believed to not ‘ truly’ be therapists or have little to no mental health training. It can be confusing for some, because never do you hear a licensed mental health counselor being mistaken for a social worker....

    I have a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy. I became disabled 10 years ago and on ssdi poverty. I'm 41, and wanting to go back to school for a masters degree to get out of poverty. I want to be a mental health therapist. It would be faster and cheaper to get my MSW and become a LCSW. My goal is to start a private practice as a therapist. A masters in psychology would take longer as I don't have all of the undergrad requirements. Do lcsws who work as a counselor make the same as a masters in psychology? Can both start private practices as a clinical counselor?

    Something worth mentioning is that for those who pursue a BSW to get their MSW. It's CRITICAL that both are accreditted by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) in order for you to utilize the advanced standing that allows for a shorter master's program.

    • @zippydamew4354
      @zippydamew4354 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your advisor may just be biased towards psychology (as many of my own have been in the past). You can be a therapist with a master's in social work (towards an LCSW license), masters in counseling (LPC/LPCC, title can vary based on location), master's in marriage and family therapy (LMFT), or a doctorate degree in clinical, counseling, or school psychology (PhD or PsyD). These fields have slightly different frameworks and ideas they may work from, but all of these paths can lead to being a therapist. If you have a certain framework or perspective you want to practice or learn from, that might make a difference. However, ultimately all of these paths are viable depending on your goals.
