I actually visited Mammoth Cave as a child and saw that gate. No one else paid it any mind but I felt uneasy and a deep sense of dread from it.

And coffee helps with keeping awake a _bit_ better than boiled water. Retroactively, with more knowledge of things, sure, it seems foolish, but it’s coming from being in that situation and lacking a wealth of options.

When Internet Historian really wants to tell a story, he REALLY commits. The last of his videos that engrossed me so thoroughly as this one was the one about No Man’s Sky, which had me actually cheering at the end. Next to that one, this is easily his best video yet. Can’t wait for what he makes a documentary on next.

When I found out yesterday that he plagiarized the script I was so angry… I literally thought the same thing, although I’ve never seen his other videos. Just this one. Whoever wrote the script is the real storyteller here.
I can empathize with how that light bulb was his last ray of hope, and when it went out so did his hope. It's kind of sad, I hope he realized how hard everyone tried to save him.
I just hope he died before it went out tbh. Or at least soon after.
More like how a few people tried to save him and how many of the ten-thousand people either did nothing or exploit the man for personal gain in life and death...

A lot of people ask why they didn't give him water instead of coffee - apparently water quality was shit in the 20s, so boiling it was the best option, and the warmth from the drink (as well as the caffeine) would've perked him up and kept him lucid.

Kentuckian here. We’ve got the best horses in the world (not an exaggeration), we supply 95% of all bourbon, and we’ve got mammoth cave. I think that about covers our noteworthy contributions. Also as a note I personally resent KFC for being named after my state because being immediately and heavily associated with mid-tier fast food as the only cultural touchstone for my home is a smidge insulting.
KFC used to be top tier fast food. They're doing great in Japan and China, but they're on real struggle butter in North America and Europe.
Plus come on, your state literally looks like a fired chicken drumstick...
Everywhere outside the USA KFC is considered top notch food. The highest of the high. I heard people talking about how Bad the US versions of fast food chains were.

From what I know, best horses in the world in general are arabian stouts with polish training, though I have heard mustangs are their own league.
@@skomolowski People from all over the world, including Saudi Arabia come to Kentucky to purchase horses. Yes, the Arabian horses are top notch, but they aren’t better or worse than ones here.
Some other troubling aspects to this story that weren't touched on in the vid.. Floyd was all scratched up and had open wounds which were constantly being exposed to water that was mixing with his poo. If he didn't die in the cave, he may have died anyway from disease or perhaps blood clots from remaining locked in place for so many days, especially with 1920's medical.
Also, that whole 4hr moment with Miller trying to free the leg just had me thinking of what the smell must've been like for him in that spot @_@ (in addition to trying to concentrate while doing a full body stretched contortion while upside down)
A perfect recipe for sepsis. I hope the cold meant he didn’t have to feel any of the inevitably infected wounds for long.
Since apparently the cave had an inward air pull, it may not have smelled too horrible.

33:05 Also raw water in that part of Kentucky back in the 20's teeming with germs I'd bet but the coffee was boiled so less of an issue plus helps keep him awake and lucid. Same with the whisky cleaner and probably helps with the pain since was often used as a makeshift painkiller back then.
Whiskey also makes you feel warmer but it doesn't actually warm you up so it helped him not feel as miserable
@@glockenspiel604 Or any alcohol, really! It acts as a vasodilator, allowing more blood to flow in your skin, thus making you feel warmer.
However, that also directs heat away from your core and makes it radiate more quickly, lowering your body temperature overall. A temporary comfort, but makes you worse off in the long run.
Maybe just, idk, boil water and DONT add coffee to it. Idk maybe im crazy.

So, if my assumption is right-- they give him coffee to give him heat, since he was being exposed to the water beneath him. He's soaked there for quite a long time, and whiskey and coffee gives off a "heated" feeling when you consume it.
This video really had me get hope in humanity in the first part, put the fear of Mother Nature into my soul in the second part and then crush all of that hope in humanity in the third part. What a fucking rollercoaster!

Coffee in early 20th was waaaaay more watery... And actually more safe due to being boiled and stuff - regular water of that time most likely would've ended up giving him diarhea.
Yes it is "good ol' times" but it was already time when people had at least some knowledge what is better to give as emergency food considering current "technology" at hand.

I be leave there was an attempt to do one many years ago based on the book but went no where, although there was a Broadway theater/musical type rendition of the ordeal but as to whether its still going or not i have no idea.

"Don't they drink water?" 🤣That's always such a wild part. It's shocking how many things go wrong with animals due to poor hydration. Whether it's humans or pets, a massive amount of problems can be preemptively avoided with having proper amounts of clean water throughout the day.
While my claustrophobia isn't as bad as it used to be, this first few minutes of this made me *very* uncomfortable. I had to stand up for a few good minutes before continuing the damn thing, lmao.

People in the old times drank a lot of water but also you have to keep in mind that hygiene in this period was still nowhere close to the modern standards. Alcoholic beverages was one of the most typical ways how one acquired decent quality drink and these were frequently far more diluted than what is served in the modern times. Beer used to have per volume alcohol content of circa 1-2%, for example. It's basically just flavored & disinfected water by that point.

I listened to the original video at work and got chills.
I’m rewatching this and actually seeing the reference images of the squeeze and I nearly had a panic attack. You will never catch me going down into a cave that I can’t stand up and spread my arms in, and even then it better be a damn good cave.
Methods of cleaning and purifying water still had ways to go during that era. Before it was safe enough to drink water without getting sick from it.
It was much safer to drink either coffee, since it was boiled.
While alcohol was distilled, and it was completely safe to drink milk because it was pasteurized.
Having clean drinking water is a thing, we take for granted in modern times.
I don't understand why they didn't use a hose to carry the exhaust elsewhere, or ducting/ piping.
My guess would be that it wasn't readily available as it would be highly situational to need such things and require time to manufacture which was something they where very much running out of, the real matter would be is why didn't this cross there mind in the first place as they been there for hours and would of noticed the air flow before even starting construction cuz if they had started digging right away they could of narrowly made it at the very least.

If you're going to do another long reaction video, I highly recommend another one from Incognito Mode called "The Gentleman Pirate". I'm not sure how much input you can give since it's about pirates, but it a great video and tells a very interesting story. That or some videos from Pyrocynical, who also makes great videos, though most of them now are quite lengthy. Still, even if you don't record it, check him out in your free time. Really cool videos. The "The Best Game You Should NOT Play" video is a good place to start, and it's pretty recent.

Claustrophobia is one of my greatest fears but Thalassophobia might be even greater then that. The fear of the deep ocean. The vastness of it. Plus I have read an acount of a Nigerian guy who was stuck underwater in a capsised ship for 3 days. His account was bone chilling.

What people don't get about the coffee is that, even if WE know that coffee dehydrated you, it doesn't mean that back then THEY would all know that.
In answer to your water question... No. Not really. There was uh... Problems with water quality. So they drank things known to be clean.
this whole thing just makes my skin crawl, i couldn't even imagine crawling through a hole twice as big, what i don't understand though... and im obviously not a caver so bare with me but... why didn't he start tunneling it out earlier in the cave ? like there's the whole turnaround room he could've done first.
I guess the logic was that he could fit through the squeeze, therefore it's fine. It's the part where he can't fit through that's a problem.

Part of it is that a lot of people then wanted to preserve the "purity" of the experience by making it a bit of a struggle to move around. Part of it was probably to impact the stability of the cave as little as possible. And honestly, he was probably hoping to make his job easier by opening up the cave to tourism first and using the proceeds to open up the pathway more.
My guess is that the main entrance was more or less a security deterrent as no one was willing to go past the turnaround but him thus if he got to where he needed to be he could easily look around for better points of interest to make it more accessible instead of his way of entry.... or he was an idiot who thought everyone would be super willing to crawl in a 9in non-supported hole to look at some fancy white rocks for a silver doller, idk 1920s where wild after The Grate War.
Some Wendigoon videos would make for a decent reaction as well now that I think about it.

Why didn't he make the entrance bigger? I mean he could still end up trapped due to falling debris. But why not give yourself space if u can? Make the squeeze area bigger give yourself room to work.
Probably in part to deter other cave entrepreneurs from pulling anything before he was finished. They were willing to beat him and stopped only at the threat of death by shotgun, I wouldn't be surprised if someone back then was willing to sabotage a cave to kill him and get their hands on it.

You've probably already learned this from researching yourself or the comments section, but back then water purification was not as prevalent as it is today.
It also wasn't shoved down everyone's throat with the constant "You need to drink more water" rhetoric that goes around today. (as if water is a cure-all.) So the question of "why not water?" is because it simply didn't come to anyone's mind for it to be the first thing to think of.
Coffee, alcohol, etc were the main drink's mostly because of all the processes they went through to create them. They were seen as 'healthier' because there would be a lack of parasites, diseases in it, etc... that un-purified water can carry.
I mean even where I live, in Kentucky, we're constantly advised to boil our tap water before drinking it. (Because the government is far too lazy to do any decent repair work on the main water pipes) So people either buy bottled water at the store, or just don't drink water here. (Cause the water in kentucky (in most places) still contains rust, lead, dirt... whatever is in the ancient pipeline. They only repair and/or replace the main pipeline when it finally breaks and they "have" to do it.
So, it makes sense that water was not a "go to" thing at the time (it probably still wouldn't be, even in modern kentucky)

It says it in the original video at the bottom, but Floyd's mother was already dead at the time and they didn't know he had a stepmother. They were basically just sending a message with the intent for it to be reported on and believed to be real.

Wisky is safer because the alcoholic nature killed most bacteria and stuff. Coffee is safer because it was boiled. Also, both would gove you a slight energy boost in times like this.

Fr, I feel for Floyd but let's not pretend that he and all of these other cave entrepreneurs weren't totally up for ruining those caves for profit. The formations he was trying to guide people to would rapidly deteriorate after constant human contact/traversal. That's by no means to say that he deserved _anything_ that happened to him, but the guy was grinding from age six to profit from native artifacts and natural formations like those caves and the greed was what killed him in the end.
