Hope you are all safe 🤗 I don't think you are overthinking the barn at all. Best to be safe than sorry. We had snow very briefly here where I live in the UK but good old British rain kicked in and that is long gone for which I was thankful. My wheelchair does not like snow and I had a very rare night out planned last night. Woke up to snow and could have cried thinking that was my 15 months in the planning night gone. It ended up an expensive but worth every penny night creating some wonderful memories in the process 😁
Happy 2025 You have some resources with Nate Kraemer and Jim at 2 Turtles Farm. They could take a look and provide recommendations. Chickens and end of the season gardens are always a good mix
One way to affix the new sills to the foundation is with concrete anchor bolts. I used Red Head brand from Home Depot for a similar project. Make sure they are certified for foundation sills. Will help to have a hammer drill with masonry bit to make the holes in the foundation quickly and deeply enough.. Drill corresponding holes in the sill boards and push the anchor bolts though the sill hole and into the concrete and tighten nut. It expands and locks into place with compression . I think you can also use adhesive in the hole. You may want to use pressure treated lumber for the sills.
No you’re not overthinking the situation with the barn mate, yes it might stand strong for another 30 years as is but it might also be that each day that you don’t start doing little by little could be closer to you waking up one morning and it has a lean on it that is going to take much more to rectify. You’ve got this mate. Good luck in the ice storm if it hits. This man from the desert of Western Australia has never seen anything like that so some footage of what that looks like would be great. Take care
I have been watching the snow falling all day here in southern Scotland and the gritters are out in force as black ice is forecast, so I empathise! Excellent shout on fixing the barn - slowly, slowly, but each stud repaired now is one more to increase the integral strength of the entire barn.
I live in southern indiana and it has been snowing since this morning. schools are closed already stores are closing early tonite its a gray haze out there with small snow though bigger snowflakes are on the way. so far no power outage. Stay safe and warm everyone
Hello 👋 Sean and the Yeostead, I had a similar experience with a carport wall. I simply checked level of the top sill and started taking small sections of sill plate out as needed replacing it. Then started with the floating studs, using a sawsall, cut the decaying wood out. Put the new piece in and sandwiched it in with two pieces of two feet long scabs on either side. Nate Kraemer knows more about fastening sill plates than I do 👍💪🙌🙏🌈✌️🐽🐷🐖
🇦🇺The old adage is if you have one , you have none, if you have two, you have one. Always have a backup. It goes for everything, animal waterers/feeding bowls to generators, to ways to heat/cook food to heating your home. You may not need it but friends or family may. The scouts motto be prepared for anything.
I think you're very wise in shoring up the weight bearing aspect of the barn. No sense in taking any chances. Praying for all in the path of the ice portion of this storm. It sounds like lots of tornado and thunderstorm warnings have occurred in the southern states, so prayers for them too. Here in the county just south of Indianapolis, IN we've received about 4" of snow so far and fortunately I don't think any ice is forecasted here.
You are certainly outside my skillset with this vid, Best I could offer is to put new studs next to the old ones and strengthen the load bearing capability. Hope you do well and the weather does not get as bad as predicted!
So happy you have that stash of wood up in the loft. Sure feels good I'll bet, not to have to put out big bucks for new wood that probably isn't as strong as the old wood is. our very wise to do the repairs so it will last another long time in the future. Y'all stay warm and I hope the storm coming your way won't be as bad as the weather folk are calling for it to be. Have a Blessed day.
Sounds like a great plan. Helpful to have both Nate and Jim to speak to about questions. I bet someday youll be working on this property when youre your Dads age, with Henry. After all, its a family homestead.
Sean, I love your thought process on the integrity of your barn. You are a wise person. The price of eggs out West has absolutely gone through the roof. This week, I saw a sign in the grocery store as it they were trying to convince us that they were running a sale with eggs at $7.99 a dozen. I am wondering if chicken feed has gone through the roof as well or in the feed price nearly the same and you can finally save money by raising your own eggs.
Hope you are all safe 🤗

Glad you’re repairing the barn, (it will ease your mind when the big storms come), and definitely extend its life and usefulness 👍
Happy 2025

Thank you for the amazing music. 🎶 I’m looking forward to learning from you as you make repairs on your barn. Take care.
One step at a time!!
Wise choice to fix the barn now. That is definitely priority because like you said, you never know when a strong wind can topple it.
Stay safe in the ice storm and snow ,
Good idea to do the sill plates and Post

Jason from sow the land did a video on how to keep our tractors longer, I put mine up on cinder blocks so the wood won't rot :)
Happy New Year to you and your family Sean
