Making a mistake is OK. Lieing about if you did is bad. Lieing about it when you know I saw it is worse. Lieing about it when I saw it AND on camera can't be tolerated. I'm a father always. Not always friend. I'm raising a adolescent into a man. Not a snowflake. I am hard. But fair.

Also it's been said already but there is nothing wrong with been tough but fair it teaches discipline something that is lacking in his generation and will carry him through his life good to see in my eyes I'm the same with my daughters

Yeah I can see why you work for Wiedmeyer now. Fritz understood that what I call the 'oath of fealty' - the contract between worker and boss, it goes both ways. You support your boss, your boss, in return, supports you.
That kind of boss goes from 'boss' to 'lifelong friend' quite quickly. There aren't enough bosses like that in the world.

Your Ohio Porter buddy here. Good stuff. The story was quite good. He placed much value on his drivers and that makes a big difference all around. That’s not true with all small companies or even larger ones, in my experience. If more companies would have that attitude towards their drivers there would be families of drivers working for them and trucking would be even more exciting. That’s what I call TEAMWORK! Stripper glitter...well, that’s a new one for me. I should remember that one, like many other of your fans. I enjoy seeing your son work with you. Treat him well, and even let him make those mistakes on his own. Sometimes you have to make the mistakes to learn from them, but not always. Good job. I worked with my dad and oldest brother and learned a great deal. That’s more fun than anything else when you work with your family like that. Keep it coming. 🤩

I remember wrenching with my dad. I'd give anything to have that back again. he yelled a lot but he wanted me to learn, sometimes the hard way. I used to get mad at him because I thought he was being a jerk but looking back on it, he was teaching me valuable lessons
and I do the same with my boys. brings back lots of memories watching you guys. and Matt, you'll look back at that battery episode one day and giggle and it will all make sense. have fun gentlemen 👍

I stopped at that same Pilot east of Knoxville one night. I had some extra time on my hands so i figured i'd get a good sit down meal at that Perkins right next to it . I'm not sure if it's still a Perkins or not this was 20 years ago but anyway I had the chicken and catfish platter. huge mistake!! I jumped back in the truck and took off. By the time a got to Lexington i was so fricking sick i thought i was gonna die. My fingers swelled up so fat i couldn't even bend them. i stopped at our terminal in Lex to get fuel and i told the guy there i was gonna go park over in the lot there and try to sleep if i don't come out in about 8 hours when his shift was up to come and check on me ...lol. fortunately i was able to sleep and when i woke up i was back to normal. I'll never forget that and i've never ate at another fricking Perkins since.

Something went on holiday in there. I'm reminded of helping a friend do an engine swap. Was a twin steer bogie drive Scania, cab over with a knuckle boom crane and a tipping flatbed with container pins. We had to get it done over the weekend so we got another knuckle boom to come by and lift out the old one and we spent the rest of the day with them side by side swapping out the ancillaries.
Next morning I turn up with coffee and egg bacon rolls but no Jim, I crawled under the gate and called out and a faint reply came, "i'm in here". He had climbed into the sleeper with the cab hinged and couldn't get out. We got the donor engine fitted and all back together that day after I laughed myself silly.
To top it off, I shared a house with another mechanic and when I related my weekend adventures he asked why did you have to get another crane truck, why not just use the crane to lift the engine out?

Here is a project for your son. When I take stuff apart I take the time to wire wheel and completely clean up parts as much as possible prior to reassembly. I use TremClad gloss black paint over a red oxide primer coat. Clean the parts with a degreaser first. Everything will look very Gucci afterward and will be easier to work on or around later. It becomes much easier to keep stuff clean. The parts become corrosion resistant. This paint finishes off silky smooth and is best brushed on. Do not buy the spray bomb cans. Teach him the value of what little extra it actually takes to do a professional job. I have a vibrating shaker unit with ground walnut shells ( reptile bedding at the Pet store is same but much cheaper! ) to more easily clean small parts while doing larger parts with the wheel.

My brother can tell you a thing or two about the D9 batteries. He was putting one back into the box on a 1982 silver Eagle tour buss and the tray that the battery was to sit in broke and it allowed the battery to twist and when it did it arced against the metal inside the box and the battery exploded in his face. He is now 59 years old and he has problems with his hearing and he also has problems with his eye sight. So you always have to be careful when working with large batteries like the D9.

Steve, just saying, I wish we had more owners like Mr. Wiedmeyer. He sounds like he was an awesome boss, and because of your work ethic, he did what he had to, to save you money, get the load delivered, AND get your truck back to you, by the time you got back. How many owners would do that for their workers today? I keep hearing how "Oh, owners of companies are capitalists, which means they're evil, we need socialism, blah, blah, blah."
They dont get that hard-working guys like you do a good job, and owners see that, when you have a breakdown, like you did with Orwell. Your company is a good one to work for, Steve -- dont ever let them go, because they sound like they take really good care of you.
Sorry about the political aspect of my comment if that bothers you, but it grinds my gears (no pun intended, lol) when I hear people who want everything for free and never worked a day in their life, trash-talk good companies and good owners of those companies.

There is also enough current in those batteries to KILL someone. Most OTR trucks have a CCA capacity when they are fully charged in the 4000 amp range from the batteries being hooked up. It takes less than 1 milliamp to kill you.

oh yes, there are some windshields on trucks in Norway during the year. most common are ipad and notebooks.
which is forgotten by those who tip the cabin.
The brand workshops now have a rule that they should open and see if there are things that damage the windscreen before starting to tip the cabin.
to even easier to forget, on the very latest trucks that the cabin jack is electric

I couldn't tell as it wasn't in the video long enough but was that drain plug magnetic ?. The reason I ask is that it would have been overloaded with metal flakes had it been and its a good practice to do a plug swap on the trans and diffs every so often to do a visual and feel the wear metal. I've talked with more then one mechanic/shop foreman at large oil field companies up here in Alberta and they change their trans and diff oils far more frequently then the over the road recommendation is and for the reason that they are finding the oils service life isn't what the claims are. That and once that magnetic plug can no longer hold onto anymore fine wear metals then the particles are constantly circulating around in the system and causing accelerated wear.

Since I started watching, always been curious what it looks like inside the cab when it goes vertical. Guess it's pretty boring since all you have in there is blankets. Ever have an oh shit moment with an open drink left in there when raising it?

Steve it sounds like the old man Fritzmeyer god rest his sole he took pride in his owner operators you don't find people like that today that's a man who respected his driver's & owner operators and the kids now running it are following in his foot steps I know your really appreciate that family owned trucking company sounds like if you do your job an do it well they would do anything to help his driver's & owner operators. And as far as your son keep up working him hard even though sometimes young ones have a hard he'll remember what you did for him.

That’s the proper way to learn. Teach him now on something small before he does something big and gets hurt. The guys that taught me damn near everything about being a diesel mechanic had his son at the shop one day and told him to alway be cautious and keep your head on a swivel. That very same day another mechanic started a truck while on the bottom step. He didn’t know but the truck was in gear and that bitch ran right into the wall. He said told you shit can happen at any moment

RC tv them heavy tubes, They least long then any of the flat screen but the flat screens are lite. That fast forward near 2:05 made me laugh, flip the tape over and press play.
Check the play by play. Safe is key, don't want anything to happen. Good ol day out helping your day fix stuff then yell at you for doing it wrong, sooner or later you will get it right.
You will learn very quick once you know you doing it wrong or something happens.

Are those car batteries? The ones we had in our old truck, you couldn't lift single handed, they were that heavy. Only 2 (2x12V) of them though.

    • @Tom-In-Ga

Used to call those bus or boat batteries. 4D & 8D 12 volt batteries. But 6 volt batteries, like Orwell has, have much better cranking power. At least I'm pretty sure they're 6 volt. Hard to tell from the video but I didn't notice any vent caps to see if there were 3 or 6 caps. Hmm, they just might be sealed 12 volt. Let's see if Steve let's us know.
