I do the same, jumbo zig 2 way glue, I have about 5 mats that I rotate, I usually use 2 or 3 while cutting a project, I like to keep the small pieces on the mat till I am ready to glue to do not lose them, and in 10 years since I had cricut I had to throw away only one, and not due to stickness issue but it was so much loved and used that the sides of it finally cracked.
Before I remove a clear sheet from a mat for the first time I use a sharpie and write the word ON in the upper left corner. If I try to put it on the wrong way it read NO. Works great.
Making a design on the clear cover - freakin genius! Have you ever slipped on one of them? I saw my life flash in front of my eyes the other day Bc it fell off my desk and I couldn’t find it on the carpet right away lol
I have slipped before 😂 I started to hang my mats sticky side to the wall by a command hook! The clear covers stay hung up at all times, then when I’m done with my mat, I just hang it backwards back on the hook and the clear sheet is lined up perfectly every time! Also helps me to keep dog hair contamination minimal cause the hair clings to that plastic!
Don't throw the mats away when they won't stick anymore. Purchase Aleene's Tack It Over and Over glue. Tape the sides and then spread a thin coat of glue on the mat. Let it dry for 24 hours. It restocks the mat. If you get to the point where you want to throw the mat away, Don't. You can use the mat for other crafts. Not necessarily for a cutting mat. I use it to cover my craft table. It has grid lines. I've also used the mat as a stencil. The mats can be cut.
I repurposed an old mat by using the Cricut to cut several sizes of hexagons “hexies” to use for English Paper Piecing inserts. I can follow Sue Daley’s glue pen method with them and reuse them over and over.
Also, by having a sticker or vinyl on your clear sheet it helps you to know which side should go back down each time so that you aren't putting the dusty side down.
The lint roller tip is what saved me from getting mad and throwing out a green matt that had only been used 3 times but had dog and human hair stuck to it that didn't want to come off with scrubbing! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I have just brought a second-hand Cricut Maker 3 that has come with so many vinyls and 3 mats, but the lady said I will need to buy new ones as hers lost their sticky... did your method with the dish soap and BOOM 💥 all 3 look like new and have stickiness back, yay! You have saved me so much money!!
I use a small command hook (placed near my work space & out of the way) to hold my clear cover sheets while I am crafting. Thank you for your suggestions on cleaning the cutting mats.
Thank you so much for this video. I just got a Cricut for Christmas and have been doing things with it since! My may needed a cleaning, and I followed one method I found online and now I’ve got spots where the adhesive is disappearing.. so thank you for showing how you clean yours and the true result of it. This will be how I clean mine from here on out!
Okay, so I wanted to try your method before I gave a "thumbs up". Well, You deserve two "thumbs up"! I grabbed two of my worst mats and washed them and they are sticky again!!! Thank you. 👍👍
Thank you, Kayla! I use the mats A LOT! I design and cut patterns and 'skins' for drum kits and other musical instruments. So, you can imagine how messed up my mats get. (Sawdust, different material shards, etc.) I quite honestly did not know these could be recycled in this manner. VERY helpful video and I am one grateful drummer! Have an astonishing evening!
I saw Justin Tyson yesterday. At a Robert Glasper concert. That guy stole the show! His 2 brain parts are like 2 independent working brains or something. xD
OmG I just tried washing my mats. I was very nervous but thought I've nothing to lose. It is air drying that the moment and its sticky again. Thanks so much for the video xxx
did this just now with my light, regular and strong grip mats.... used regular dish soap and a new sponge....scrubbed each for about 2 mins.... blotted dry with a paper towel.... and OMG they are back to brand new after a drying for a couple of minutes!!! thank you for this!!! subscribed! XOXOXO
I am so thankful for your trick with the fabric grip mat and the clear transfer paper! I almost messed up my whole cricut maker yesterday because the adhesive of the mat started to not work so well anymore. THANK YOU for all those tricks!
Oh I have an amazing tip which was passed onto me from generations after generations. Even as a blacksmith my great-great grand uncle (who was also the original inventor) changed his life.
These tips are extremely helpful. I'm somewhat new to crafting and using my ancient cricut, but my sticky mats are already a lot less sticky. I thought I was gonna have to toss them soon, but I think I can save them now! Thank you so much☺
After watching a few of your videos I have learned so much. You get to the point, you give clear instructions, and it’s enjoyable. You have a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.😊👍
I got a Cricut as a gift. I'm thinking it is a gift that can change my life for the better in so many ways. Saying that, I'm new to this, excited, and scared!🙈🙂 Thank you for your video! 💯
Cricut should come with these instructions! I didn't know half of this stuff and I tried to use the "Awesome" method, and it DID take the adhesive right off! A SUPER COSTLY MISTAKE!
Yes, I had to learn how to prevent my mat from getting lint on it at first and didn't realized that keeping the clear sheet was essential. So, this is how I found your tutorial. Thank you for sharing.
I've used Awesome from the Dollar Tree with much success. I sprayed it all over the mat after taping around the edges with painter's tape. I only left it on about ten minutes then scraped it off using the same scraper you did, the XL. Then wiped it dry with a paper towel. Then let it air dry the rest of the way.
Megan Lowe it didn’t I promise !!!! It made it so you can resurface in between uses use a baby wipe to clean it but you can resurface it so easy to what ever strength mat you need tape off the edges and ya tack it over an over but aleenes if you can find it on amazon. They don’t have it In any regular/craft supplies stores.
I recently used the Grove brand All Purpose cleaner on my mats and it worked great! I sprayed it on and used by scraper to get the hair and paper off then just wiped it off. I have the new mats and they’re almost like new again!
You don’t need to do all that .... just soak in room tem water. The sticky esa becomes soft and releases everything, I mean everything! Use a scraper very gently for the stubborn buildup
You are a genius for putting vinyl over the mat cover!! Thank you for a great tip! The "awesome" cleaner ruined my mat. The soap and water did a perfect job of cleaning the mats. Thank you again for a wonderful tutorial!
Great tips! I clean my mats with Totally Awesome! I have never lost the stickiness to any of my mats but I think the trick might be to scrape it instead of scrubbing with a sponge or rag. I never use anything but my scraper when I spray it on there and it just scrapes the gunk off. When it's dry, it's sticky again. 😊
Thank you. Kelly Barlow creations has a great one. I use goo gone, old credit card, painters tape and loctite and have not replaced cricut mats since 2008. I finally just treated myself to a 3 pack for 11.99. The mats had so many cuts in them. It was time to retire them.
@@KaylasCricutCreations let the goo gone sit for about 15 minutes you will see it gooey lol...scrape then wipe off, I place my painters tape around edges and spray 1 even coat let dry, place plastic back on. I like to save and reuse as much and as long as I can
Gosh, thank you for the tips on cleaning the mats! I’ve been beside myself, not knowing what to do. I cannot even get my vinyl to stick on my mats. They’re so dirty. And of course I purchased second hand. 😩 Going to give this a try!
Great idea to put a sticker on the cover! I lost one of them once and it got left on wood floors where I couldn't see it. I stepped on it and slipped and almost got taken out lol. Definitely going to do that!
Thank you so very much! I am very very happy to have come across your vids. My children had just gotten me the cricut maker and I have NO clue how to do ANYTHING!! YIKES! Again....THANK YOU THANK YOU for making these videos for all!
I put a small sticker on the front top as I found out you can put these on backwards. When you do, they don’t want to come off. I love your idea. Put a saying on it. Love that.
Fantastic tip! Thank you so much. Worked perfectly on my blue and purple mats. I didn't have soap on hand though so I used laundry detergent and still worked perfectly 😅
I had no idea that it matter which side the clear cover went back on the mat! My mats are still sticky so I haven't messed them up Yet. Ms Kayla should wash them and then add a label to the top?? And this was another great tutorial! Packed with a lot of great tips. Thanks for teaching all of us. You're a pleasure to learn from.
I used the Awesome cleaner stuff from the dollar tree one time and the second time I went to use it, it had taken the adhesive off of my mats for some reason & I didn't do anything differently. Only thing I can think of is because the first time I did it it sill took the adhesive off but not a whole lot. I am going to try this for sure!
Thanks for sharing your cleaning method. I personally use Awesome. I wet the mat, pour Awesome straight from the bottle and scrub using just my fingers. It only takes a couple of minutes to remove the dirt. I rinse and air dry. They get really clean and sticky. I’ve saved a couple of mats using a few pennies worth of Awesome.
I used awesome and it worked. It didn't take the adhesive off but I used very little and only on the green mat. I am totally decorating the clear cover.
Hello ! I did use AWESOME SPRAY from dollar tree, I ruined a corner of the Mat because I let sit for a couple minutes, but did it quickly next time and works so well for me. Thanks for Sharing :)
Because you will find one one day on amazon that comes with everythinggggggggg just buy aleens tack it over an over to resurface your new mats when they aren’t sticky anymore
as a screenprinter I found many things I use on daily basis to be just as useful for my vinyl cutting business as well. One such thing is the liquid adhesive I use on my palets to hold down the tee shirts while printing on them, I also use a very small amount of this on a mat that no longer has adhesive on it. It gives a great medium to strong stickiness on my mats.
Received my cricut joy in the mail today and used the sample vinyl to cut a crown and put that on the clear cover so I can find it again lol 😆 good to see others do that too. I got glitter on my mat from an unrelated to cricut project (one desk problems) so now I'm cleaning it already on day 1. Haha!
I'm SUPER glad you mentioned the masking tape as well as the potential to void the warranty! Honestly, you'd think that was obvious but truth be told- hadn't occurred to me and I was thinking about the spray. But they're not that expensive to just replace. However, I've wanted one of these machines for 15 years (or however long they've been around 😆) and am just now getting one so I'd hate to lose it. Ive only had it a few weeks 😆
thanks so much my first cricut maker 3 or first cricut ever actually your videos are very helpful ive had my machine for i think 10 days now and my green mat is very dirty, i dropped a foil sheet face down on mat and what a mess, im on way to kitchen to wash it, thanks again Kayla
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m a beginner. Can you please do a video explaining the purpose and use for the different color mats ? Greatly appreciate it. Awesome idea to decorate the clear cover. God bless ❤
Thank you for this information. I never knew cleaning the mats were a thing and I’ve had a cricut since the first machine. I just I live under a rock. Lol!!! Thank you!!!!
I just watched ur video and cleaned my mat. It wasnt sticking nothing. I think I scrubbed too hard in some parts it's not white.. But I LOVE the idea of making a decal for the clear cover I'm always loosing my piece, one day I slipped on it when it was in the floor Haha. Thanks for the tips :)
Oh no!! I've never had that happened! 😔Did you let it fully dry? Thanks!! Someone else said they slipped on theirs also lol. I'm glad I could help with that tip! 🥰
Hi Kayla, I just bought my Cricut maker to use for fabric cutting. I noticed that after continously cutting the same pattern over and over that the cutting tool will start to cut into the mat. What is the standard life of these mats? I love your videos and hacks. The cleaning process you recommended for new mats really works awesome and has helped me with the multiple projects that I've been working on. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.
Hi! Thank you so much. I'm glad! I'm actually not sure what the standard life is of the mats but that is what happens to my pink and even my purple mats as well. I've had my green and blue ones for a few years and unfortunately I've had to buy more of the purple and pink mats.
Thank you! Im doing my initial set up now after months of wanting one and I just felt the need to check on the care of the mats. I am a little anxious to use the pink mat but As I do my research, I will get there.
I have had my mats for ten plus years. If they are not sticky enough I use Zig 2 Way Glue with the jumbo tip.
Wow!! Thanks for the tip!! :)

That's what I do, with a piece of washi tape. Great minds and all that...
I took a handheld punch to the edge and matched up my ScanNCut mats with each cover. Also helps know which mat is older/different.
I wrote on the front top of the clear protector sheet the word TOP so I know which way to put it back every time
That is a great idea, I will have to try
agh!! how is this so simple yet so brilliant?!!? doing it right now!! thank you!!

Thanks! I’ll have to give it a try again! :)
What do u wipe off with? Towel, bounty?
Also the Awesome needs to be diluted
Awesome is not highly recommended BUT please dilute it.
The awesome spray really only worked on the older style of mats. They changed the adhesive on the new ones
I just got my Cricut a few weeks ago, so thank you! This video has been very helpful!

Thank you for the information about the pink mat, I was getting angry at the lack of sticky, will use your idea
Wow so simple . Mat is like new and I’ve labelled the protective sheet so I can find it. Thank you
I just watched ur video and cleaned my mat.
Brilliant tips, especially the fabric mat tip, genius!
Thank you so much I cleaned all my mats and they now stick again!!
I change my mat up by using it from the bottom markings.
Thank you! Im doing my initial set up now after months of wanting one and I just felt the need to check on the care of the mats. I am a little anxious to use the pink mat but As I do my research, I will get there.
The washing the mat technique definitely work.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! My mats were saved!!! 🥰💕
