  • Whether you love it or loathe it, cabeceo is one of tango's most important conventions. Understanding the rules of cabeceo and knowing how to apply them (and how to break them gracefully) is crucial to succeeding on the social dance floor.
In this episode I share some general guidelines for performing cabeceo properly and how to use it to your advantage so that you get the dances you want.

To overcome cabaceo-fear, think as a pedestrian crossing a street. In that case there is also a wish and even need to make eyecontact😂. Even the card rivers do literally the knot with the head once there is eyecontact. So next weekend no milonga but crossing streets to exercise cabaceo😂

Are you referring to the "5 things every dancer should know about tango musicality" class? It is posted on my website: imsotango.com/

I am curious if there is an explanation as to why the cabeceo exists in Tango but not in other social dances. I mean... it is such a nice way to dance with someone without locating face... being forced... getting embarrassed, etc. that I find it strange that it is not used in other dances.
Of course, there are historical reasons but I was wondering... do you think it has to do anything with the nature of the dance?... maybe with the romanticism or the emotional charge that sometimes the music carries?

I think there are historical reasons for it developing within the culture of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century. But what I actually wonder is why it has survived for so long. There are a lot of people who really don't like the etiquette and claim that it's their biggest obstacle to sticking with tango. But somehow, it still survived and I don't think it will ever go away. But most people today would say, I bet, would say that they would prefer to just ask someone, the "normal way."

@@imsotango Well... for people like me who are (or maybe were) a bit shy... being able to invite without being noticed from other people and in a way that you don't loose face in front of a crowd (if you get rejected) it is a great way to expose yourself and risk inviting with the safety net that almostnobody will notice if you get rejected. I know it was hard in the beginning but once you get used to it... you love it. And this is I think the main reason it still survives. Because it serves a reason.
So my question is actually the opposite... how come other dances have not adopted similar (more sublte) practices?

If someone tells me that they won't dance with me because I initiated, THEIR LOSS!

  • @phillipstivi3947

I probably won't dance with you if you initiate. Perhaps, I want to dance with you, but the song isn't right, or I'm tired and want to catch a breath - many reasons. If you initiate I feel compelled to say yes, because it's hard to say no to a woman, and that's sort of unpleasant. Starting a casual conversation is far better idea, btw.
And don't worry - I'll notice you if I want to, no matter the lighting :)
