  • Cabeceo is not just a set of rules, but a tool that can be adapted to individual styles and situations. At least that’s how Alex and I think about it. In this episode we explore different ways we can practice the cabeceo that can help us connect with other people and get more dances.

Two alternate cabeceos stand out to me.
I was at a festival and been doing workshops all week and dancing long nights. By the time of the second week I was well exhausted. So much so I was micro napping at the milonga. So I moved to the back of the table, pulled up another chair and slumped over it to have a nap. I don't know how long I was asleep, but I woke up and a woman was already cabeceoing me, the only way that could've happened was her watching me sleep!
At the same festival, I was very popular, so I made it a point to try and dance with everyone once (an impossible but fun goal). Everytime I came back from a tanda there was already women trying to get their dance with me. One I found most hilarious was one woman sat in my chair! The same seat I had been occupying the whole weekend. It was sort of more hilarious because she was pretending to not "see" me, like it was an accident she sat at my table of my friends and in my chair!

It s an amazing feeling when standing 10 meters away, all across the dancefloor, a cabaceo happens to succeed. It 's even a better feeling, walking all the way around the dancefloor, passing all these people thinking...how for god's sake did that guy do it? And the satisfaction is every time complete when you arrive at your chosen partner and receive the most beautifull smile.

As a dude, if a guy wants to follow me, he can just ask, always happy to help a bro out (:
Same goes for followers! But in either case I do reserve the right to decline a verbal invitation for whatever reason.

This just comes over as increasingly poor excuses for the cultural appropriation of cabeceo/mirada from Buenos Aires to the western cultural world. Do you cabeceo someone sat next to you? Do you go as a couple? If the milonga environment is so poor and badly arranged that you have to walk over to 10ft (seriously?) to make a face, just ask. It's 2024. No one cares about 'losing face' or any embarrassment about rejection (and walking over really made it obvious). Nevertheless, when that's the culture, as in Buenos Aires, do it! Don't be the brash tourist who thinks it's an extension of the US. Keeping people in tango is difficult enough without adding unnecessary games.
