  • Today, I will show you how I replace 9V battery from a multi meter with a couple of 18650 li-ion batteries.
And here's my previous video where I used 2 lipo batteries instead: • DIY: 9V battery hack. ...
I've been using it everyday for 6 months and the 2S1P Lipo battery pack still remains about 90% full. That's pretty remarkable.

I like the salesmanship, it's not bigger and bulkier, it's now self-standing.

Same problem I encounter a lot with my multimeter. Always buying 9volt battery is now a burden to me. This is great Idea and thanks a lot. (We actually have the similar salvaged laptop battery which is very funny.)

they make rechargeable lithium even voltage regulated batteries in the 9v size but I totally love your methods, free batteries + modify the meter = no expensive 9v's to buy.

One question though. How do you charge them? Could've made it a complete setup with a 2s bms charger & protection board.

How do you compensate for the difference in voltage levels between the 9 volt alkaline and the li-on with your meter's read out (maybe not accurate readings because of lower voltage of te li-on)?

Such DMM works at about 5-6V, so 9V is put just to save some space (instead using 4xAA or 4xAAA) and voltage is decresed in internal buck converter.

But the highest voltage you could get for that is 8.4v. I'm looking for something similar for my Sota Bio Tuner BT9 which takes a lot of power to run. I've tried NiMh and they only last for two sessions, plus lithium ion aren't actually 9v. I used a single 18650 connected to a voltage converter and then a regulator. I'm able to get a stable 9v, but the dummy battery I made (from a PP3) that I removed the terminal plate from and did best to insulate with tape) doesn't seem that safe or even fit well. Though it was the best I was able to make.

Chriscom28 it might sound stupid but is it possible connecting a single 18650 with a random 5 volt smart phone battery?

There are already 9V batteries with 2 LiPo cells inside. I purchased this 2 years ago in Banggood for $5. You can charge it via built-in microusb socket and there is also LED capacity level indicator. Actual voltage fully charged battery is not 9V but rather 8-8.2V, in most cases it doesn't matter.

I read a buyer saying there are 2 versions, one with 2 cells and another with 1 cell+booster so it gives real 9v at the expense of lower capacity and higher self discharge

Multimeters are usually regulate the 9V battery voltage to 5V DC voltage internally. Somewhere inside this multimeter is a 7805 voltage regulator or similar. It is enough use only one small li-ion battery and li-ion charger/usbdriver (5 pcs PCB for 1 USD on aliexpress). Your way is absolutely unnecessary (only li-ion battery wasting) - you dont need the voltage higher than 5V DC. Just probe the pcb of that multimeter.

it doesnt work. İ did same thing and lion batteriy was 8.4v total but mulitimeter displayed that low battery and didnt work

its really awesome idea to replace all shit AA, c, AAA....etc batteries with Lithium ion . let me suggest something to add on this, add a "charging port" for those lithium ion batteries which you install on back of your volt meter. then you don't have to remove when the batteries are below limit.

Great idea. But charging this is very easy. I just use alligator clips to clamp the wires and connect to my charger and that's it. It's been 2.5 years of continuous use everyday and I only had to charge it once!

guess i'm not the only one that hates the 9V battery, i was thinking a single 18650 + boost convert the voltage to 9V.
