Here's my reasoning for everything.
1) "there was only one of you until you split the world in two" seeing how nobody knew about deltarune when this first came out this is saying that, the two worlds is the underground and then the void. The "one of you" part meaning that he has been spread across space and time so he is everywhere.
2) "our tears fell to the floor when you were gone" its either referencing sans and papyrus, or all of the underground. But seeing as sans is the only one that remembers gaster it would probably be them. And papyrus would've been too young to remember what happened
3) "feeling frozen to the bone" is a pun and also a reference to living in snowdin at the time while gaster was working at the core and fell in.
4) "we must go back through your tombstone" seeing how the core is the only way to get to the kings castle and back, thats all i can think of, the core is where gaster died. That is his tombstone. So whenever they walk through to either get to the surface or judgement hall they have to go through there unless sans uses his shortcuts
5) "the ceiling stars i wish apon for dr. Gaster" the "ceiling stars" we all know what its referring to. The stars on the mountain so monsters can wish apon them like real stars. But for this sans is wishing on the stars for gaster...
Anyway thats all i have. Sorry for typing all this. I just felt like i should throw my ideas out there as well.

when you listen to the lyrics fully, the entire song takes on an entirely different meaning.
It sounds like someone, perhaps of Dr. Gaster's followers (who I'll refer to as they), could *not* accept their gods death, and refused to believe it. It also sounds like they will go to *any* length to find him, even going through the same thing he did - 'we must go back through your tombstone' - and it nearly killed them - 'feeling frozen to the bone'. They also sound...really not ok mentally, what with the difference between the music and lyrics and 'I'm frozen inside/Dr Gaster, way down in my mind', not to include although he thinks he's talking to Gaster, it's just him. The time without his Gaster has also turned him bitter, saying 'You left us behind' and 'left in the background'

I've noticed a lot of people commenting on how it didn't make sense how the Annoying Dog and Temmie mixed to form Gaster, but I think I figured out what it means.
Annoying Dog= Toby Fox, the creator of the game.
Temmie= Well... Temmie, who was a big help with putting the characters together.
They both had to combine their skills to make all the characters in Undertale, so them going together to form not just Gaster, but ANY character would make sense!

I see everyone saying they think this is being sung by Sans... and I agree with that. Okay, here's my reasoning/Analysis of this theory and the song itself.
"I won't let you down." Many people speculate Sans to have been an assistant to Gaster in some ways. This lyric could represent how Sans is trying not to let his teacher down. (I say this cause some think their father - son, Brother - Brother, Student - Pupil, etc.)
"Left in the background." I have a feeling this references to the "Gaster Followers" who give you info about Gaster, but rarely show up. (Now I don't think can show up legit because FUN value was ruined...) Their also really vague on the info they give you, so Gaster's *background* is still very vague.
"I'll try not to frown." This is one of the main reasons I believe Sans is singing this or this is just from Sans' POV. Sans is one of the most depressed characters in the game, yet he keeps a *smile*, opposite of *frown*, on his face, even on the murder run. Granted this is probably due to lack of cheekbone but still...
"I must flag you down." I think this is just referring to Sans wanting to find (Flag down) Gaster.
"There was only one of you until you split the world in two." Gaster falling into his machine (Nudge, CORE, nudge) made him fall into the 'Void', splitting the world in two.
"Our tears fell to the floor when you were gone." Simple, whomever is singing is sad about Gaster. However, it says, 'Our', meaning more than one person. After a while I think it's either, Sans and Papyrus, Alphys and Sans, Sans and the Gaster Followers, or just the monsters in general, since Gaster seemed to be very loved.
"Feeling frozen to the bone." Once again, more evidence this could be Sans.
"We must go back through your tombstone." I have a feeling 'Tombstone' is referring to either CORE or Hotland, since Gaster seems to have 'fell' in one of those two places.
"The ceiling stars I wish, upon." The caves people. Plus, people like to think Sans likes stargazing and the thing about wishing on the cave rocks, it says it's basically our equivalent of wishing upon a shooting star.
"For Dr. Gaster." Dawww~ ( ^w^)
"Through oceans of time." Different timelines anyone?
"Please know we're both fine." I have a feeling this is referring to Sans and Papyrus, and how they (or just Sans) don't want Gaster to worry about them.
"A god you've become." Should we be scared about this? In all seriousness, I think this is how Sans views Gaster, a God watching over them.
"You left us undone." Of course Sans is distressed or, *undone* over this. Assuming this is Sans of course.
"I'm frozen inside." Losing someone you love can make you feel cold and emotionless. That's my explanation.
"Way down in my mind." Sans is theorized to be the last person (um, Gatser followers count?) to remember Gaster.
"You left us behind." Pretty self explanatory.
"You were destroyed by your pride." Gaster fell into his machine that I can only imagine he took great pride in.

I now believe in your theory. Sans was his pupil/ assistant before Alphys became Royal Scientist. Sans stopped being an assistant not because he's lazy, but because he felt tasked to watch over his little brother, Papyrus. His lazyiness is how he distracts himself. I have waaayyy too many theory's on this game

As a deltarune lore enthusiast, this song utterly confounds me. most of the theories that established the symbols and themes that relate to gaster were established when deltarune released. Water/oceans/downwards/ice(kinda indirectly but. Hey.)/religion/smiles, like the only ones i could see how you got were water and ice because of snowdin and waterfall having the most fun events out of every area but like. You didn't say anything about heat and hotland is also full of fun events how did you do this.

Small thing I noticed: The line "you were destroyed by your pride can be read two ways.
Obviously, there's the obvious "destroyed by his hubris/pride overtook him and caused him to make rash decisions" reading.
But there's also the possibility that his "pride" is something he made. People will sometimes call their projects their "pride and joy", so it's possible it was something he was proud of making or spent a lot of energy on.
Something like the core.
Or a mysterious machine.

"A god you've become" makes sense considering he demonstrates the power to crash the game and even teleport people. And given the existence of DEVICE_GONERMAKER in Deltarune, he also created life, the Goners. Congratulations on being the only person Ive seen who actually got Gasters lore correct and didn't add any fanon onto it.
EDIT: Ive been proposed an interesting posibility in regards to Deltarune, the Gaster in that game could, quite possibly, be just a normal one rather than the one from Undertale, running world altering experiments and I suppose even creating a machine intended to connect to Player souls to stick them into a VESSEL, for the sake of science, or quite possibly something more, after all we dont know much about his motivations.
