My grandma lives in Ft. Lauderdale (shocker). As a kid when we'd fly down as a family in the 90s from KC. We'd fly into ATL from MCI and then almost always on a Delta L1011 to FLL. I am very thankful to see the L1011 on display at the Airline History Museum at the Downtown KC airport. It is a must see for any lover of classic aviation. You can even tour the cabin.
My favorite all-time plane. I was fortunate enough to get to do a roundtrip on TriStars from ATL to LAX and back in 1996 for an interview trip when I was getting out of college.
My first flight on a Tristar was when I flew AMS-JFK on a TWA L-1011 back in '87. It would be my last time, they're all gone now. Thanks for posting this, the overwing view brings back good memories...
I loved this plane. My parents use to go to Vegas on this one non stop from IL and they would have cocktails at a bar and could smoke and had so much fun and they had room as the seats were not pinched so tight. WE are not better off today because of non smoking and smaller planes and more fuel efficiency. We are losing Cadillac quality and our freedoms.
Amazing takeoff! Such a shame almost no classic airliners fly today. Although some planes of the 80's do hold up still, the 757, 767, and MD80 are in active service today.
@antimatterXXXIII Actually the L1011 was state of the art for it time based on the wing design and a few other things. This aircraft was produced way before 76 and 75, though those AC wings are amazing in themselves. Basically two different eras.
I was born in ‘96 but I saw a few of these growing up on the odd occasion, the same with DC10’s and 727’s and the loudness, the smell and the character of these older planes is something the 787’s and A350’s of today seem to lack. Even the 747 is a lot rarer nowadays over Heathrow I feel and I work/live here.
The Tristar did have a long range version, the L1011-500. But it came to the market too late (thanks to the RR debacle) after the long range DC10 had more or less swept 90% of the share. It was available from around 1979 when the first long range DC 10-30 was available in 1972.
One of the scariest flights I ever had was on a Delta L1011 from New Orleans to Ft. Lauderdale. Went through a line of thunderstorms on climb out. 4 lightning strikes and turbulence so bad one of the flight attendants was in tears. After things quieted down the flight engineer did a walk through the cabin, I guess looking for holes.
Wow, first time i ever heard something negative regarding the L-1011, everyone seems to Love it, including Many Pilots. You must've had some really Severe Weather on that trip, the TriStar got you home tho.
Operationally and technically, the Tristar won hands down agst the DC10. But commercially, the DC10 was LESS of a failure than the Tristar because it sold more copies due mainly to the intercontinental DC10-30s.
The Tri stars still fly on....chartered that is. i flew one back in 2002 from Okinawa Japan to S. Korea. And agaiin for the last time I came back from Iraq on one. I love these birds. They to me are a more pleasent aircraft to look at with there blended Number 2 engine design where as the DC-10 and its bigger wingletted brother the MD-11 have there number 2 looking somewhat incomplete.
To answer the question as to why the Tristar was discontinued, first it was locked in a mutually destructive sales battle with DC10, which hurt both MDC and Lockheed bad AT a time when the oil crisis depressed air travel greatly and then it was squarely beaten by the new gen 2 engine airliners from Airbus and Boeing in the fuel economy dept. The Tristar was beautiful and really advanced for her time. But she was born into the wrongest possible time.
What was great about the DC-10? The number of people that were unnecessarily killed? The 727 is also louder than Thor. The L-1011, however, was pretty much in a class of its own in terms of safety.
this had to have been post 9/11 cause Delta discontinued those old old colors after. Also to u those colors seen on the md-80's b4 takeoff must have been the new colors to u back then right.
Unfortunately, Boeing out-sold Lockheed, and more efficient twin engine aircraft eclipsed the Tri-Star in trans-Atlantic service as well. Now, in my humble opinion, you'll never find a smoother flying plane... not even the big Boeings can compete (yes, I've flown in 777s an 747s)... but, Lockheed lost hundreds of millions when a superbly designed and FAR ahead of its time aircraft just wasn't bought by anyone. So they discontinued production early.

In the early 90’s Delta would fly L-1011’s on the Atlanta to Orlando route. I flew that several times as a kid.

Love the L1011s. Wish LM would make a commercial comeback.
good old days of DAL, man. My mom flew one of these long ago. Wish i could have.
My first time and flight was on an L1011, Delta DL38 ATL-AMS-STR. back in Oct. 1993, man I miss these big girls. My new boo is the 763ER.

I always want to ride in those Lockheed Tristar! Sadly I never got chance, O' glory Lockheed L1011 Tristar!
Love those design!
great departure, the 1011 was a great airplane, handles like a gem. Always enjoyed the rolls royce power.
First plane I ever flew in and fell in love.!
I've flown on a Delta Air Lines L-1011 in 1983 & loved it too.
The L1011 was a great plane. I only ever got the chance to fly on one once back in 97.

I like that departure! That UA 737 departing right next to u is awesome, prolly headed for KORD.Nice video!
I really miss those days, the loud B732, the 1011 and the old color scheme
What a beautiful climb. Thank you so much for sharing.
L 1011 was a joy to fly as a passenger ! The BEST !
I was born in ‘96 but I saw a few of these growing up on the odd occasion, the same with DC10’s and 727’s and the loudness, the smell and the character of these older planes is something the 787’s and A350’s of today seem to lack. How times change! I flew on a couple of these machines when Eastern Airlines had them. Good airplanes. They had their time.
I like this Delta color scheme. The logo on the doors make the planes look aggressive.

thanks. this was filmed August 24, 2000.
Back in the 70s there were domestic 747s too! Delta still uses the heavy jets like 767s on the high capacity domestic routes - to Florida.
Thanks so much for posting this video i have never gotten the shear size of the tires or the engine compared to person a!
I would kill to go back to the goldendays..
Me too.
Who's the random guy on the ramp? None the less it's a great video!!!
Since I haven't flown on the L1011, how was this aircraft compared to the new 767-400 that replaces it?
I would say they are about the same in terms of passenger (economy) comfort for their time.
Operationally and technically, the Tristar won hands down agst the DC10. But commercially, the DC10 was LESS of a failure than the Tristar because it sold more copies due mainly to the intercontinental DC10-30s.

yes the L-1011 was pretty quiet. I guess thats why Eastern Airlines nicknamedit the "whisperliner".
excellent video sir.
the good ole days with l1011s and 737-200
Flew these from atl to tampa and bwa frm heathrow to jfk. I remember the middle ovrhead lluggage rack swaying lft to rght during take off

i worked has a cabin crew in a L-1011
beatuiful looking in the Delta OC :D
what year was this???
@dpaanlka - August 2000, about a year or so before Delta stopped flying them.
Doesn't seem like those RR engines are as loud as the GEs on the DC-10, I guess the L1011 was a quieter plane.
What was great about the DC-10? The number of people that were unnecessarily killed? The 727 is also louder than Thor. The L-1011, however, was pretty much in a class of its own in terms of safety.
Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, un avión único y especial, que Dios lo acompañe
thanks!
They still fly ATL-FLL and FLL-ATL, except now they use 767s.
what about the 727s?
@stevekach ..... I miss those planes too .... my Dad still worked for Delta Air Lines at that time .....
It is a United 737.
Rolls Royce RB211s at your service.
God this baby is 31 years old
@bml33 Not sure.
August, 2000.
me encanta este avion
I love hartsfield airport

hotrod869 Hi, this is actually pre 9-11. We retired the last L-1011 July 31, 2001.
Number 2 engine was so loud if you were in back of plane
Unfortunately, Boeing out-sold Lockheed, and more efficient twin engine aircraft eclipsed the Tri-Star in trans-Atlantic service as well. so the DC10 had better range than the Tristar? .. to bad Tristar didn't make a Long range version. thatway the might won against the DC10.
AWESOME!
A year later and these old bird would be gone.
@Myggomag - L-1011-385-1
Let's face it, the wing design on the airplane was light years behind the 757 and 767 - that is what killed it.
@XXXGhostGrenadeXXX - August 2000.
i would say this is probably 1998
united airlines with a 747-400 LAX-ORD
me too !
I agree with boomernavy! ! to bad they were born in a wrong time
Rofl at 0:04 XD
