+Michael Wright I am a homeless teen, moving from shelter to shelter so I can afford to pay for my education in hopes of one day getting a better life. At least, I am lucky because as a Canadian citizen, my tuition isn't very high and it is partially covered by a scholarship. With the help of a student association, I got a macbook. You're the one who is stupid. Homeless doesn't mean stupid, what do you think a homeless person would do with a MacBook? We are human too. Some of us did not choose this life and want to get out.
What's awkward is when at school, you learn about something that relates to your culture or race (me being Chinese) that other people find funny. My example is when we were learning about how the Chinese worked in rice fields and wore those triangular straw hats. I never saw anything bad about it until people started telling me that I should do that. I felt embarrassed...about my own culture and I never embraced the fact that being a Chinese American is just who I am. Never feel embarrassed about your race or culture or anything. It's who you are and you should embrace it.
Hidden. Those are too real spoken words. I told a guy used to work with the same thing. It isn't that our historical culture is bad, it's that we believed others who told us it was bad. I'm a black male and proud of what my cultural background did for my freedoms.
My mom grew up being one of the people who would have to walk miles to get water. She told us that once all she had to eat was beans for a few weeks. She worked really hard and was extremely smart and now we live in a big house in America. I'm so thankful for my mom and everything she went through for me ☺️
2:50 "You feel angry for a few days, but then you just realize, this is how it is." That one hit me. I remember in high school, we were learning about how the Chinese were exploited in the production of the CNR (Canadian National Railway), the Head Tax, the mistreatment of Japanese-Canadian during WWII... I legit resented white people for days. I'm not Japanese or Chinese, but the oppression they faced back then still resonates, to this day, in the lives of Asian diaspora (and many other POC). I got over it, but it still hurts. We can only work towards a better future, now.
Well how do you think I felt when I had an excursion to a concentration camp with my school as a German? When I saw all that I was crying in the shower afterwards.
I hate racists. I hate discrimination. I hate sexism. But never have I hated a race. I can understand why some people may be mad at the past but at least as a white male I can't fucking change the past. I didn't dictate what my ancestors did. I literally had no part in any of the things that may trouble your mind today. Everyone recognizes that bad things have happened but there's no perfect race. Everyone makes mistakes. And at least in your case you say you resented white people for a few days, that's just plain ignorant. You may not feel that now but if you do and for anybody who may it's idiotic to hate a whole people because of a few or the past. I guess that's easy for me to say but as humans can we stop dwelling on the past? Let's learn from our mistakes and move on as people, not colors, or religions, or sexual orientations, just people.
Black women will always have it the hardest, so when you realize some are in power or powerful or inspiration they gain most of this literally from nothing. They are amazing magical human beings
HeirOfGlee "black women will always have it the hardest". yea...no. you need to travel, o read a bit more to really understand the troubles of every race, and culture.
freezinfeet um...even black woman travelers say this is around the world, even worst if they think you are Africa and not american. Just read an article a few days ago about it and how she was ignored service and bumped in the streets. here are two facts Being a women is hard universal being of darker skin is hard universal so imagine a black woman
EXACTLY! I knew the black woman was going to end up at the back followed by the black man ahead of her. Black women suffer so much injustice and so many ppl just like this 'freezinfeet'commenter try to dismiss, belittle or erase that fact, but it's amazing how black women rise above it all, QUEENS!! Maybe one day things will get better.
Lol go to Saudi Arabia. How you act reflects how people view your class in america. In Saudi Arabia you're automatically lesser because you're a woman.
The thing that hit me the most is how in the beginning everyone was holding hands. But towards the end it got harder and harder for them to hold hands until it became impossible because the difference in privilege kept everyone so far apart.
If you complain about someone's privilege to the point you try to make them feel guilty for having so much while others have so little, the you are closeted of envy that you aren't as privileged
Privilege isn't not having any problems. Everyone has problems. Privilege is, however, not being affecting by certain problems that others can't go a day without facing.
Nic Oden Me three! I totally effing want to find out where I am on this. I have a feeling my sexuality and gender fluidity will place me far behind all of you cishet people.

Paawan Sagar Unlike me. I swear physical disabilities should have taken about 3 steps back because it's literally that hard to have a body that doesn't work.
Charlotte Roberts ur white so what would you know? and black people are specifically being targeted right now in the usa so that's why i said what i said.
***** i'm white so what would i know? really? just because you're a certain race doesn't mean your knowledge is limited to facts solely about your race... and still, a black person with a working body is privileged.
***** i am not saying that black people are the most privileged. I'm literally just saying that people with working bodies are more privileged than those without.
Woolder Taylor basically what they're trying to say is that you should be greatful for your privilege. You should be proud that you and your family have been able to get themselves into a stable point in life. Not all people always have privilege, you've gotta start somewhere.
well i wouldn’t say you should be proud of it because that implies that underprivileged people should be the opposite, ashamed, and that’s not true. you should, however, be grateful for your privilege. :)
Privilege just boils down to luck. Everything is essentially luck even the fact that the Earth exists is just because it happen to be the right distance from the sun. If you have a problem with this blame the universe and change its physical laws.
+ClumsyRoot Did you choose your parents? No. Did you choose where you grew up? No. Did you choose the school you were sent to? No. Did you choose the kind of people you naturally get along with? No. Did you choose what you were going to be naturally talented at? No. Thus understanding "freewill" as being a mere illusion has nothing to do with work ethic.
Admitting your "privilege" is just another way for people to make themselves feel like they're affecting positive change vs actually doing anything. I can bet you that 99% of the people involved in this video don't volunteer in any charity organizations outside of making for profit videos about them and "privilege"... *EDIT:* I wrote this in a pre 2020 world, my views have drastically changed since this comment and it no longer reflects my views
I understand you may not have realized the horrible implications of your comment, but by saying you're glad you have privileges you are saying you are glad the system of privileges/oppressions exists. This is supposed to make you aware of how many other people *don't* have as many privileges as you do, if at all, and encourage you to use your privilege to help those people.
Anna Skoglund Yeah, grateful would've been better. Or lucky. Lucky would actually be quite good, because it also suggests that you understand how arbitrary and unfair the system is. Nothing to apologise for, you have realised your mistake and sought to improve. That is very good.
This is really deep. I'm glad Buzzfeed posted this video. It's thought provoking and the visual of how privileged some people are compared to others makes me appreciate the privileges that I have today.
This...really got me thinking and understanding how privilege I am, and being privilege doesn't just mean having nice clothes etc. This really was a eye opener.... hope everyone having a great day
we did this exercise in one of my classes. We started in the grass and then the most privileged person ended up on the sidewalk while me and this other guy ended up in the dirt/bushes. And I am still thankful for the privileges I do have. But it was an experience I will never forget.
Diversity is inequality. We are all different and equipped with different capabilities. We will never be equal. If you want to change this, you want sameness. If you want diversity, there will never be equality. There's nothing wrong for being inequal. That's only reality. Deal with it.
I remember doing this exercise at USF and I didn't know where I would end up, I expected to be somewhere in the middle, but I was actually the last person. My friend was all the way at the front and we looked at each other. By the end of the exercise she didn't feel good and I didn't feel good. A short conversation later we both just hugged and got through the day. It was very powerful.
It is a privilege to be able to find makeup that fits your skin tone and to be able to pay less than 10$ for it. Men might laugh, but they don't feel the pressures some women feel, especially in the workplace, to look a certain way. If you're a poor woman of colour and can't afford to find proper makeup that suits you, maybe you will get fired from your receptionist or sales job because your lack of makeup makes you look dumpy and unprofessional.
@@asdkotable First of all, plenty of women don't wear makeup. It's not the necessity you're making it out to be. Second of all, are you trying to say makeup shades are a sign of white privilege? Because if so, that has nothing to do with being white and everything to do with simply being in the majority - so majority privilege. Obviously if you live in a place where most people are a certain color, brands are going to cater to that color. It's basic capitalism. Now, though, brands are overcorrecting just to be politically correct. When I lived in a neighborhood which was 90% white the local stores still had equal amounts of makeup in every shade, so the white shades were always sold out and the black shades were always available. So in that case it was actually a disadvantage to be a member of the white majority. Privilege is a tricky concept. Before labelling an entire demographic as privileged, remember that the world isn't as binary as democrats make it out to be.
It would bring up financial status, bullying, health, etc. In most schools, the teacher can't announce that to the class. But for colleges and universities it would be perfect.
I did this starting at 0, +1 for the step forwards -1 for the steps back and I ended with +1. I am white and male, but I am also gay, Jewish, and I grew up in an impoverished household. I didn't go to college (not because of financial disabilities) but thankfully now, I have a steady job and income. I thought being a white male was enough to get me more, but I think all the questions about growing up was really what hurt me. It goes to show that even if you are successful now, your past still affects you in pretty major ways.

No they are not. Many people get violently attacked because of their Belief or sexual orientation. There are also plenty of women who are sexually harassed.
I am an Asian bisexual upper-middle class female living in America. Financially, I feel very privileged. My dad is a doctor, my mom is a pharmacist, and my parents and grandparents are paying for my education. My biggest setbacks are probably my race, sexuality, and gender.
Depends on your goal. In modern office workplace you don't have any setbacks except those in your mind. In manual labor jobs and sports, being a woman is disadvantage. Bisexual - lower partner pool. Race - nah, even here in my country there is very little problem with racism. Though this being an old post, I think you've realized these things
Hearing the first few questions just really made me think and I am SO THANKFUL FOR MY PARENTS AND ALL THE HARD WORK THEY PUT INTO MAKING SURE WE HAD JUST AS MUCH OF A CHANCE. And the work they're still putting in for us.
A great non-hateful way of addressing the issue. When you talk ably privilege, many tend to get defensive very quick because they feel attacked and being called a bad person for being who they are. But it's not about guilt or hatred - it's not about making the "privileged" people feel bad for who they are. It's about showing the world and knowing that what some take for granted(or are simply unaware of) is not common for all. It's about realising that the people who do not have the same opportunities deserve the same as others and that we should address and work towards a better world for everyone TOGETHER. Can't we all just agree upon giving each other and ourselves a chance?
You mean our own countrymen stabbing each other in the back? Or ignoring people, stuck in a bad spot? Investing nothing into future generations? Yeah, I'm sure they will.
Being physically separated from people based on something that they can't help and things that society has built up honestly seems so heartbreaking. it built up barriers that you didn't even realize existed because you were with these people because you chose these relationships and society didn't
I'm glad you posted the sources and the questions in the description bar, because I'll definitely go through these myself. This kind of makes me emotional, but it's interesting to visualize it, because at least where I live, we don't really talk much about privileges, we just take things as they come ( which is another sign that we're probably very privileged compared to some others ). I wish we would've done this when I went to school, it definitely would've had an impact on many people.
Thats because your ancestors killed and slaved many Afro Americans and Native Americans for hundreds of years while they steal land and build a utopia for their descendants.
"If the primary language in your household was not English, take one step back" Why does having a family who speaks English give someone privilige? If anything, the fact that a foreigner may speak another language gives them an advantage.
+utpawn It might be a disadvantage because your parents might not be able to speak english which means that they aren't able to help to help you with homework. It could also be a disadvantage because you may have an accent which people make fun because it's not American.
It makes it harder for your parents to get jobs if they don't speak English or can't speak it well. My girlfriend's family immigrated from Japan, and neither of her parents is fully fluent in English. Her mother was a doctor in Japan, with a really good salary, but here she's working two jobs just to get by, one at a restaurant and idk where the other one is. They had to move back to Japan for a year when she was in fifth grade just so her parents could make enough money to support them for a while longer. Being bilingual is obviously helpful depending on your job, but it can be a serious disadvantage when parents aren't bilingual and can't work well-paying jobs.
+Natalie Rushman i will still never understand why people who are dong soo good in their country, will leave everything and come to america just to suffer and start from scratch. whats the logic beind that? iv come across immigrants with similar backgrounds, they had amazing lives back in their home country. smh its sad :(

+utpawn The knowledge of the word is in your cell phone. That is why. If English is your second language you have to learn it first. Than the word will be open. English Wikipedia: 5 085 779 German: 1 911 617 Hungarian: 381 983 article (21.2. 2016) If you speak more than one language it is a privilege to you. Two steps back if English is not your mother tongue and one step forward if you are speaking an additional language.
+Ender Snail It helps you realize just how difficult some people have it when compared to others. Some people have their lives made but others may only be getting 5 hours of sleep a light to juggle everything they need to survive and live. For those who realize that they do have privilege, they can use that as a tool to help others. Really, it's mainly just about understanding each other a little more so that we may get a along better.
+Ender Snail Maybe it's unhealthy for the reality of white supremacy to continue to exist; that is, white supremacist society. But it's very healthy for *EVERYONE ELSE* because it wakes them up.
Dalton Adams People often harass people that are black, women or gay (basically minorities), and she is all three of those things. She has the right not to feel safe
Cute Pumpkin What you fail to understand is that the male you mention who is blond and white, probably was not murdered because of being male, blond and white. You can't say that about ethnic people, women, gays, lesbians, trans, etc. That is why there is fear among those groups of people and you can't fault them for feeling that way.
...which is also dependent on their race. It's also dependent on their social class, gender, nationality, gender identity, and orientation. But to say it isn't based on race is a ridiculous assumption and erases the struggles of being a minority
***** You do realize that less than sixty years ago we had the civil rights movement? That means black people's grandparents and parents suffered from job discrimination, housing discrimination, and all sorts of other racism that significantly impaired their children's opportunities growing up.
***** how about the fact that housing discrimination stopped them from moving into the suburbs long ago? Or that job discrimination stopped their parents and grandparents from accumulating wealth? Or how there are many people in companies who are still holding onto these ridiculous racist ideas because we as a society still haven't healed after the civil war and slavery?
This really is eye-opening. Most of us really tend to focus on what we don't have and strive to have everything we want that we forget to see what we already have and be grateful for that and realize that even if we don't have everything, we still are more privileged than most people around the world.
If you wasted college getting a gender studies degree take all the steps forward because you can work at Buzzfeed, be well paid and constantly think of ways to divide people.
The thing that always irked me about the idea of privilege is that the word itself implies these things aren't necessary, and can (and possibly should?) be revoked, which I think is why so many people use it as a means of shaming or dismissing others. Not being judged on your race, having a healthy environment growing up, having a good support net, those aren't *privileges*, they're *rights*. I don't want to *not* have those things so that other people feel better, I want everyone to have them. Everybody step right up and get some so-called "white privilege". It's awesome.
i hate these people so much. stop crying about your privilege you live in the united states, you get to be on youtube, you get paid well by buzzfeed (for sitting around and doing next to nothing).... stop whining
they are not complaining about their privileges, they are just trying to show that some people have less than others and basically just trying to say dont take the things you get for granted
This is so brave and beautiful. as they are youtubers, they’re used to allowing themselves to hide behind comedy, they got so real in this. It’s so beautiful to look at something like this. As a a community with the bond of friendship I don’t think they realized how different they really were untill this. This is really amazing.
In any society some people will have more privilege than others. But cmon, its not race that makes privilege, its money, but if they did the privilege scale based off money, they'd all be the same.
im a straight white male, im so sorry for what i have done. Im so sorry for all the oppression i have caused. I promise to become gay and get a low paying job as an apology to everyone.
How are we supposed to draw conclusions if the video is so edited? Are we just supposed to trust their conclusions without seeing the actual point of the video basically at all?
when I was growing up, I didn't have a home for about 3 years ( I was living on the streets not attending school) so when I went back to school to get my education at 14, my teachers never understood why I was 3 years older than everybody, and now I'm trying to get a job and make a living without a college degree or high school degree to support myself. so I'm privileged because I live in the United States, the same government that kicked my family out of our home and fired my parents from their minimum wage jobs? the same place that let's children time on the streets with no home for 3 years? the same place that says if you want an education, you'll have to pay off $150,000 in student loans, or else you'll be working at McDonald's for $8 an hour for the next few years? the same place that let me starve in school because I couldn't afford the school lunches? wow. unbelievable.
While I feel bad for your situation, none of your problems were caused by, or could be fixed by, government. You had bad circumstances that weren't your fault. But the government did not kick you out of your home. Ironically in a socialist country, they WOULD be able to do for something simple as speaking out against them. How did the government fire your parents from minimum wage jobs? Did they try finding other ones? Children should not be living on the streets, but we have things called foster families and adoptions, and again, it seems like a lot of these problems were caused by your parents' bad choices. But you CAN overcome them, and the privilege of being American born is what will ALLOW you to do so! The bottom line is the United States is the best country in the world for lifting yourself out of poverty. Would you rather have socialism where the government not only gives you everything, but controls everything too? Controls your choices, takes your freedom? That's what happens in Socialist countries. Too many people have the attitude, "well if America were really free everything would be handed to me by the government." Those people have no idea what true freedom means.
most of these questions were very opinion-based on not on actual problems in everyone's daily lives. asking if someone doesn't feel safe is very different from a person who is not safe. I'm just saying there is a lot of things that could raise or lower your score based on location and income as well. Like for example if you lived near the beach but in a low run down home and could still take a vacation it would raise your score however if you where born in a foreign country like the UK or Canada it would lower your score. I'm just saying don't take this to heart on whether or not you are privileged in life
My mom helped me a lot when I was growing up even though she's a single parent. I feel really proud right now, but also sad, because I know all the things she did to get me to where I am today and she'd probably be near the back of the room, like the other sister back there.
As I have grown older I realised that in life everyone truly suffers at one point or more in life, no matter what their demographic is perceived to be. These games victim Vs privilege is a a waste of time. Instead be kind and just love people for who they are, their race and gender should not make up who a person is, it's who the person is on the inside that truly matters.
But you're missing an important nuance here - some people are more likely to suffer/experience more struggles in life due to the group they belong to. There is nothing wrong in acknowledging this fact of life.
Where can I find this test? I want to try it with my friends because we are all really different, in appearance and in family. I just want to know what things other people really had.
Privilege means not ever having to check out your TH-cam comments after you posted, and realize you posted something silly, and either acknowledge, correct, or delete it. To blithely go on and not have to account for yourself...
I finally caught the question "If there were more than 50 books in your household..." and I think it's the first time I've ever realized that there were, and they were all mine. I'd step forward because the answer is yes, but I did that. I did that.
Joshua Van De Wiel Everyone in first world countries are privileged - period. Women have certain privileges over men but are definitely not overall more privileged. Women are still two times more likely to suffer sexual abuse, and more likely be murdered by their partners, be in abusive relationships, get paid less for doing the same job, get discriminated against when applying for jobs, be shamed for being comfortable with their bodies and sexualities, etc. And this is coming from a man, believe it or not.
cupnoodles201 Prove of the 'pay gap'? Also if women go to the beach in a bikini, nobody blames them, beats them up, degrade them. Or even do anything to them. The same for men. What do you have to say about all the privileges i showed you? There are even more.
cupnoodles201 Did you not see my entire post of statistics showing how privileged women are? Also isnt it logic if a woman picks a less earn job than a man she earns less? Also men and women get the same amount of money for the same job, small differences, picks the women makes can result in a 2-5% less earning ( she decides for herself )
Luna Star it’s ok to let go of people that holding you back, you should move forward and be yourself and they will be themself where they want to be 🤷🏻♀️
I feel like that is such a good question. People always say you should feel ashamed for being privileged but never tell you how to make something with that to help others. I guess you have to find that on your own, but at least you want to.
Madelyn B-E The first step is owning your privilege and acknowledging the fact that you may have gotten to where you are in life because of the structures set in place by our society. From there, it's about empathy, empathizing with people who do have it harder, learning about causes people are fighting and supporting them, etc. I mean do what you want but if you really want to help that's what I would do.
you can work to help minority groups through activism, although simply understanding your own privileges and feeling empathy towards those who are disadvantaged is a good start.
Interesting quiz. I tried this on myself. I know this was done (with some bias) in the US. I answered this honestly, despite the fact that I'm living outside the US (in Japan). With that said, I ended up taking 4 steps back throughout the quiz. I'm sure this would also be similar to my kids taking this, too (like if one or both parents were laid off not by choice). Well, I was laid off a couple of times not by choice. 1. The company was getting out of my industry, so I was layed off. 2. The terms of my contract was up, and by law, the companies I worked for couldn't renew my contract. 3. The school I worked for was going through some financial troubles, and I was laid off because I was one of the higher end paid teachers. So, my point is that I was let go because of things that I couldn't control.
Interesting - I assumed I'd do pretty well in this "game" since I'm white, heterosexual, and cis-gendered, but I actually ended up with a score of +1, mostly because of being female (of course) and because I grew up in poverty. I assumed the questions would all boil down to "if you're white, male, heterosexual, and/or cis-gendered, you're privileged," but it actually ended up being a lot more complex than that. I was also surprised at how many of the questions centered around how the person "felt" - I wonder how different the results would be if they confined the questionnaire to purely objective questions. And would that make the results more or less accurate?
I think when we don't accept that racism/sexism/ect. are massive issues it divides us, this video was done in a horrible, dividing way. We are all in this together, regardless of the fact my ancestors made millions of mistakes(me being a white male). Telling people that their pain divides us is a large way to tell them that we don't care that they've been mistreated. At the end of the day, my life, my love, and my priveledge are honors, they aren't dividers. (Just making sure that you meant well)
In personal opinion, I think this experiment helps people recognise what they have and be grateful for it. I think it also helps us realise where faults in society still are and that we still have a lot to work on.
Wow I'd love to take part in something like this. It'd be really interesting to see where I end up, because I have a lot of privileges and a lot of disadvantages.
Electron Ghoul Nobody is saying that you have to be ashamed of being privileged. just that privilege is a real thing and that people (depending on their culture/social and economic background/ethnicity/gender and gender identity/sexuality and so on) don't face the same hardships (or not in the same way). And that sometimes, privileged people say others suffering is the same as theirs, but given the fact that everyone's situation is different, you can't really know what other people face and feel. I think that this video meant to make people see that we can never really put ourselves in other people's shoes and that we have to listen to them because we don't always know what we are talking about
I agree wholeheartedly with Justin on not being sure of where asian-americans lie on the privilege spectrum. We are known to be successful and goal-oriented, but there are still race-related challenges and hardships faced by the stereotypical "model minority." It's tough to navigate and define the gray area we're in, so it's very confusing and unsettling at times to find ourselves on one end of the spectrum or the other.
Why is there so much talk about things like WHITE privilege & MALE privilege but we never talk about P*SSY privilege, BEAUTY privilege, or HEIGHT privilege? Could it be that people only wanna complain about the DOUBLE STANDARDS than don't benefit them?
French girl : I took 11 steps forward and 6 steps back.. Honestly I thought there was gonna be much more steps forward, because I feel so privilieged. (but I skipped a few questions since I'm minor and I couldn't answer them) It's ok to be privileged, It's not your fault but make sure you know it and that you're doing the best you can to help the less privileged ones.
some of these questions have to do with personal fears or confidence. everyone has to work up for confidence that doesnt necessarily mean you have mental issues or privilege just because youre confident.
I like how they were all in a good mood, laughing, getting a long, then they measured each other by "privilege" and everyone got uncomfortable. it shows what this type of thinking does to people.
But we need to get uncomfortable. We need to face the uncomfortable reality that society has been set up this way. It needs to change. It's needs to be talked about.
They got uncomfortable with recognizing their own relative privilege, which is a GOOD thing to wake up to. That is how we begin to understand one another and start deconstructing the cruel Calvinistic rugged individualism that permeates our social structures, economy, and politics.
@@lip.w.8910 You don't represent or speak for the rest of the majority of group that has to deal with the consequences of racism. That's not how it works. The vast majority has a low quality of life compared to people who belong to the top of hierarchy which has nothing to do with their talent or skill.
I feel like a lot of people are ignoring the fact that not all the questions addressed privilege in reference to race and ethnicity, but social class as well.
This video actually made me cry to actual see societies structure instead of just hearing about it. My goal as an African American woman is to find a way to be in the front.
Some people have to deal with the stress of struggling for and failing an exam... one dude in my class has done his homework and learned for the exam. That's privilege!
one black women, represents every black women in the world 😂. Gotta remember guys, buzzfeed is the most resourceful, and creditable news source 👌. The people that make 2$ hotdog vs 150$ hotdog
No, one black woman would never, just like one black man didn't- Obama. There is a loooooong looooong line of institutional racism that will be continuing long after the fat lady sings. If we don't fight for that, we fight for nothing, well nothing but the exploitation of resources, labor.. lining the pockets of the corporations. Fight for each other, not just so you have less taxes for your huge house, right? I rather walk down the street someday without houseless people begging me for money than spend my evenings patting myself on the back for all the privilege I've extracted from my environment. And when I say privilege, I really mean money.
Jarod Francis in short you made yourself one of the victims by complaining about this video. Not to mention the documented discrimination faced by women, gay people non-white people. Are you familiar with their struggles.
Jarod Francis I'm gonna assume based on your spelling of color you aren't American so there is that and you're white so there's that and you're straight and even if you aren't you're white and male so no beyond the kind of discrimination and hardship EVERYBODY *EVERYBODY* can experience no I don't think white people experience the same hardship people of color do in the West, specifically, but in their own countries after centuries of exploitation. You don't know anything about what privilege is even though enjoy a great deal of it but you feel qualified to speak on it. Do you have a lot of experience with being a Latino gay man in America, a black woman in Britain, a Asian Muslim man in Australia? Can you imagine what that is like being poor, bullied, LGBTQ, female, etc and brown? Do you even know any brown people, personally, and if you do, do you know any who don't _just so happen_ to agree with you?

Hey im chinese too! #asianpride
Hidden. Those are too real spoken words. I told a guy used to work with the same thing. It isn't that our historical culture is bad, it's that we believed others who told us it was bad. I'm a black male and proud of what my cultural background did for my freedoms.
I totally agree. Every time we mention slavery in history class everyone looks at the African Americans and I'm just like what are you looking at.

2:50 "You feel angry for a few days, but then you just realize, this is how it is."
That one hit me.

The thing that hit me the most is how in the beginning everyone was holding hands. But towards the end it got harder and harder for them to hold hands until it became impossible because the difference in privilege kept everyone so far apart.
No pretty sure it was the difference in spatial coordinates.
What is keeping everyone so far apart is this unhealthy obsession.

Why do people feel ashamed to have privilege? Its great and you should be proud of it!
LeBender it is great. But proud of what exactly?
Woolder Taylor basically what they're trying to say is that you should be greatful for your privilege. You should be proud that you and your family have been able to get themselves into a stable point in life. Not all people always have privilege, you've gotta start somewhere.
LeBender Because of guilt and they don’t want ppl do be jealous of them
You should be happy about it. You get to live and learn peacefully. We can use this privilege to help other with little.
well i wouldn’t say you should be proud of it because that implies that underprivileged people should be the opposite, ashamed, and that’s not true. you should, however, be grateful for your privilege.
I understand you may not have realized the horrible implications of your comment, but by saying you're glad you have privileges you are saying you are glad the system of privileges/oppressions exists. This is supposed to make you aware of how many other people *don't* have as many privileges as you do, if at all, and encourage you to use your privilege to help those people.
Lucas Trugeda oh i didn't realize :| Should i have used a word like grateful? I'm not good at english. Sorry if it sounded wrong
Anna Skoglund Yeah, grateful would've been better. Or lucky. Lucky would actually be quite good, because it also suggests that you understand how arbitrary and unfair the system is. Nothing to apologise for, you have realised your mistake and sought to improve. That is very good.

"Privilege is worrying about finding the right cosmetics."

Cathy Strawman she’s not wrong( buzzfeed)
By definition it is..
It is a privilege to be able to find makeup that fits your skin tone and to be able to pay less than 10$ for it.
Men might laugh, but they don't feel the pressures some women feel, especially in the workplace, to look a certain way. If you're a poor woman of colour and can't afford to find proper makeup that suits you, maybe you will get fired from your receptionist or sales job because your lack of makeup makes you look dumpy and unprofessional.
asdkotable Bruh tell that to people in third world countries and they’d laugh at you
@@asdkotable First of all, plenty of women don't wear makeup.
Privileged to live in a country where I can breathe easy.
This would be a fun activity for classes!
I agree
It would be interesting to have that with my class, but I would be behind most of my classmates for sure...
James Ford i doubt that.
It would bring up financial status, bullying, health, etc. In most schools, the teacher can't announce that to the class. But for colleges and universities it would be perfect.
Emily Valencia as long as it isn't in a stem related degree
I did this starting at 0, +1 for the step forwards -1 for the steps back and I ended with +1. I am white and male, but I am also gay, Jewish, and I grew up in an impoverished household. I didn't go to college (not because of financial disabilities) but thankfully now, I have a steady job and income. I thought being a white male was enough to get me more, but I think all the questions about growing up was really what hurt me. It goes to show that even if you are successful now, your past still affects you in pretty major ways.
Agreed. -1 for me for many of the same reasons.

It's hard to like actually answer some of these because a ton of them are situational or have multiple meanings.

"If the primary language in your household was not English, take one step back"
Why does having a family who speaks English give someone privilige?

She will not tell because she has no reason
+Ender Snail It helps you realize just how difficult some people have it when compared to others. Some people have their lives made but others may only be getting 5 hours of sleep a light to juggle everything they need to survive and live. For those who realize that they do have privilege, they can use that as a tool to help others. Really, it's mainly just about understanding each other a little more so that we may get a along better.
+Ender Snail Maybe it's unhealthy for the reality of white supremacy to continue to exist; that is, white supremacist society. But it's very healthy for *EVERYONE ELSE* because it wakes them up.

your privelege doesnt depend on your race, it depends more on your parents success while you grew up
...which is also dependent on their race. It's also dependent on their social class, gender, nationality, gender identity, and orientation. But to say it isn't based on race is a ridiculous assumption and erases the struggles of being a minority
And the successes your parents achieved were largely affected by their race.
Race does matter.

It's awesome.

when I was growing up, I didn't have a home for about 3 years ( I was living on the streets not attending school) so when I went back to school to get my education at 14, my teachers never understood why I was 3 years older than everybody, and now I'm trying to get a job and make a living without a college degree or high school degree to support myself. so I'm privileged because I live in the United States, the same government that kicked my family out of our home and fired my parents from their minimum wage jobs? the same place that let's children time on the streets with no home for 3 years? the same place that says if you want an education, you'll have to pay off $150,000 in student loans, or else you'll be working at McDonald's for $8 an hour for the next few years? the same place that let me starve in school because I couldn't afford the school lunches? wow. unbelievable.
School lunches are free if you apply
I hope things are going better for you now

I'm with you. I lived in an abusive home, and nobody bothered to help me either.
Now I'm unemployed, and still have baggage from it.
@@nickn2794 well socialism usually leads to communism and please put your country's name
most of these questions were very opinion-based on not on actual problems in everyone's daily lives. asking if someone doesn't feel safe is very different from a person who is not safe.
The world needs to see this
But you're missing an important nuance here - some people are more likely to suffer/experience more struggles in life due to the group they belong to. There is nothing wrong in acknowledging this fact of life.
@@Ghostrider-ul7xn Exactly this.
Where can I find this test? I want to try it with my friends because we are all really different, in appearance and in family. I just want to know what things other people really had.

Literally?
+Jessie Bernard Not to worry, she's a middle class buzzfeed employee, she's actually a lot better off than this asinine 'experiment' indicates.
don't worry she's a middle class employee of a media corp her life is almost certainly a lot better than this makes you think it is.
Privilege means not ever having to check out your TH-cam comments after you posted, and realize you posted something silly, and either acknowledge, correct, or delete it. To blithely go on and not have to account for yourself...
Our school made us do this walk.

I finally caught the question "If there were more than 50 books in your household..." and I think it's the first time I've ever realized that there were, and they were all mine. I'd step forward because the answer is yes, but I did that.
I did that.
Women in first world countries are privileged, you cant deny it.
Compared to men in first world countries or compared to women in other countries?
juliet romeo Both
Joshua Van De Wiel Everyone in first world countries are privileged - period.
When those two girls had to let go because the girl had to move back
Luna Star it’s ok to let go of people that holding you back, you should move forward and be yourself and they will be themself where they want to be 🤷🏻♀️
@@mariajones8304 Do you understand the video?
What do I do with my privelege though? How can I use it to help people other than myself?
I feel like that is such a good question. People always say you should feel ashamed for being privileged but never tell you how to make something with that to help others. I guess you have to find that on your own, but at least you want to.
Give up your privileged... Affirmative action look it up
Madelyn B-E The first step is owning your privilege and acknowledging the fact that you may have gotten to where you are in life because of the structures set in place by our society. From there, it's about empathy, empathizing with people who do have it harder, learning about causes people are fighting and supporting them, etc. I mean do what you want but if you really want to help that's what I would do.
you can work to help minority groups through activism, although simply understanding your own privileges and feeling empathy towards those who are disadvantaged is a good start.
star neko Nobody says you should feel ashamed for your privilege...
Real privilege is being able to visit this site once without being lured into watching another cringy clickbait Buzzfeed video
OMFG its the minecraft music guy
This proves that highlighting and using terms like "privilege" and "racism" just divides us even more.
This should be the top comment!!
(Just making sure that you meant well)
No, it illustrates how we’re already kept artificially divided.
Racism should be used instead of privilege as it highlights the problems
Whitest comment so far!
I don't care if I'm privileged, why should I feel ashamed for the way I live
Exactly. Use that advantage to make society around you better, not to shame or guilt.
Electron Ghoul
Nobody is saying that you have to be ashamed of being privileged.
just that privilege is a real thing and that people (depending on their culture/social and economic background/ethnicity/gender and gender identity/sexuality and so on) don't face the same hardships (or not in the same way). And that sometimes, privileged people say others suffering is the same as theirs, but given the fact that everyone's situation is different, you can't really know what other people face and feel.
I think that this video meant to make people see that we can never really put ourselves in other people's shoes and that we have to listen to them because we don't always know what we are talking about
You shouldn't be ashamed, you should just be able to recognize that you're privileged and understand how lucky that is
Raven :3 ok but it means nothing to me, so I'm privileged big woop
wow you are ignorant, just be happy you a priviledged and arent starving or abused. thats it
I agree wholeheartedly with Justin on not being sure of where asian-americans lie on the privilege spectrum.
(but I skipped a few questions since I'm minor and I couldn't answer them)
It's ok to be privileged, It's not your fault but make sure you know it and that you're doing the best you can to help the less privileged ones.
Privilege: Something I apparently need to check more often.
some of these questions have to do with personal fears or confidence. everyone has to work up for confidence that doesnt necessarily mean you have mental issues or privilege just because youre confident.
Uh-huh. So very wrong. Clearly doesn't understand the exercise, clearly leads an exceptionally sheltered life.
@@kurthaas4331 ~ you say that like there might be something wrong with being a socialist. :)
The purpose is to divide and conquer us.
So if someone ridicules you, you automatically have less privilege? The world revolves around your feelings?
I feel like a lot of people are ignoring the fact that not all the questions addressed privilege in reference to race and ethnicity, but social class as well.
This video actually made me cry to actual see societies structure instead of just hearing about it. My goal as an African American woman is to find a way to be in the front.
Its enlightening how most of these things can be reduced to your family's level of income
Some people have to deal with the stress of struggling for and failing an exam... one dude in my class has done his homework and learned for the exam. That's privilege!
I think everyone should do this, purely because some of the questions can point out how people feel about, say, offensive jokes
+Georgia Morgan Offense is taken never given, lighten up, the world needs more comedy.
it's your choice to be offended. You choose your own attitude and your attitude will determine your outcome.

Enough of the term im black, you are a gender, everyone is to blame base off of their parents parnts
Finally! Buzzfeed, you finally did something meaningful to a lot of people. I appreciate your work.
This is victim culture
Tebigong101 I did not understand what you just said, please explain
Jarod Francis you sound an awful like someone playing the victim... who's got a papercut demanding immediate care while standing next to a man with a gaping hemorrhaging bullet wound in their chest. lol
Who only watched this video so you complain about it. lol
You understood absolutely nothing of what I said.
Anyone who lives in a free society carved out of the chaos, blood, sweat and tears of their ancestors is privileged. We are ALL privileged.
the point is some have more and it’s okay
